Book excerpt: The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most disruptive technologies, enabling ubiquitous and pervasive computing scenarios. IoT is based on intelligent self-configuring nodes (also known as things) interconnected in a dynamic and global collaborative network infrastructure. In contrast, Cloud computing has virtually unlimited capabilities in terms of storage and processing power, speed, and is a more mature technology. Due to intrinsic nature of Cloud computing and IoT, they both complement each other. Recently, we are witnessing an increasing trend in exploiting use of both Cloud and IoT together. Salient Features: • Presents latest developments in Cloud computing • Presents latest developments in Internet of Things • Establishes links between interdisciplinary areas where IoT and Cloud both can play a role for improvement of process • Intends to provide an insight into non-IT related models for improvement of lives • Bridges the gap between obsolete literature and current literature This book is aimed primarily at advanced undergraduates and graduates working with IoT and cloud computing. Researchers, academicians, policy makers, government officials, NGOs, and industry research professionals would also find the book useful.

Book excerpt: Enhancing the integration of renewable power generation from wind and solar into the traditional power network requires the mitigation of the vulnerabilities affecting the grid as a result of the intermittent nature of these resources. Variability and ramp events in power output are the key challenges to the system operators due to their impact on system balancing, reserves management, scheduling, and commitment of generation units. This book presents development of energy management system for renewable power generation (EMSRPG) tool that aims to achieve power-dispatching strategies based on forecasting renewable energy resources outputs to guarantee optimal dispatch of hybrid wind-solar photovoltaic power systems (HWSPS). The key selling points of the book include the following: Renewable energy management in modern and future smart power systems Energy management systems Modeling and simulations using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) High penetration level of renewable energy sources Case studies based on Oman’s power systems and other power grids This book discusses the challenges of integrating renewable resources, including low inertia systems, hosting capacity limitations of existing power systems, and weak grids. It further examines the detailed topologies, operation principles, recent developments in control techniques, and stability of power systems with a large scale of renewables. Finally, it presents case studies of recent projects from around the world where dispatchable power plant techniques are used to enhance power system operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book makes a case for a socially inclusive energy transition and illustrates how engineering and public policy professionals can contribute to shaping an inclusive energy transition, building on a socio-technical systems engineering approach. Accomplishing a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy in 2050 is a daunting challenge. This book explores the challenges of the energy transition from the perspectives of technological innovation, public policy, social values and ethics. It elaborates on two particular gaps in the design of public policy interventions focused on decarbonization of the energy system and discusses how both could be remedied. First, the siloed organization of public administration fails to account for the many interdependencies between the energy sector, the mobility system, digital infrastructure and the built environment. Cross-sector coordination of policies and policy instruments is needed to avoid potentially adverse effects upon society and the economy, which may hamper the energy transition rather than accelerate it. Second, energy and climate policies pay insufficient attention to the social values at stake in the energy transition. In addressing these gaps, this book intends to inspire decision makers engaged in the energy transition to embrace the transition as an opportunity to bring a more inclusive society into being.
