Book excerpt: This book offers a unique and timely contribution, informed by responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, to unpack the intertwined challenges that planning needs to cope with in the future. It argues that the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, in their successive waves of restrictions and social distancing, have disrupted ‘normal’ practices but have also contributed to shaping a ‘new normal’. The new normal is emerging, re-configuring, and prioritizing the substantive objects of planning and its governance and participatory processes. This book discusses this shift and presents a collection of episodes and cases from diverse European urban contexts to develop a new vocabulary for describing and addressing challenges, models, perspectives, and imaginaries that contribute to defining the new normal. The book is aimed at scholars interested in urban planning, sociology, geography, anthropology, art, economy, technology studies, design studies, and political science.

Book excerpt: Business Planning: Financing the Start-Up Business and Venture Capital Financing, Third Edition uses a simulated deal format that is drawn from the “deal-files” of real world practicing lawyers. It integrates the teaching of transactional lawyering skills with the presentation of new substantive law that is critical to the success of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting. The book gives students an overview of the range of substantive law that lawyers representing new businesses need to be versed in. To bridge the gap between law school and practice, the authors integrate excerpts from sources authored by experienced practitioners, thus bringing practical and real-world insights to students. Shannon Treviño joins as co-author on the new edition. Key Features: Integrated teaching of transactional lawyering skills with the presentation of substantive law that is critical to the success of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting. Analysis of both the legal issues and the business considerations that must be taken in to account in planning the structure and negotiating the terms of a capital raising transaction for an early stage company. A simulated deal format to provide a real-world appreciation of the “life cycle of a deal,” with a new simulated client whose business is focused on addressing a need in the autonomous vehicle industry, which presents a timely topic for faculty to engage with students on at every juncture of the course. Graded memo assignments that are representative of the work assignments expected of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting and that relate directly to the substantive material that is part of the casebook reading assignments. A thoroughly revised Chapter 4 regarding federal securities laws, incorporating numerous legislative changes that have been adopted or have become effective since the publication of the second edition. Significant additions to Chapter 8, including an updated overview of venture capital and a broader discussion of the capital formation process prior to venture capital financing.

This book was released on 2024-01-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the extent to which the environment is addressed in the sustainability plans of Canadian cities. It assesses if and to what extent select leading environmental priorities are addressed in the sustainability plans of sixteen Canadian cities, followed by analysis of efforts towards each priority. It scores and ranks cities against each environmental priority and highlights what makes some cities lead and others lag in environmental sustainability. The book unravels the complexity, similarities, and differences in environmental sustainability planning across major cities in Canada. The project reflects what’s working, who’s leading, and which environmental priorities support the sustainable city model. Climate change has exacerbated the impacts of flood, droughts, wildfire and storms, urban centers must account for sustainability to mitigate and adapt to a changing and uncertain landscape. It begins with robust and integrative sustainability plans that prioritize the environment. This book will make a timely contribution to the on-going debate regarding the ways and means to become a sustainable city. It reflects the on-going sustainable development discourse and deliberations to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. It cut across many SDGs in particular SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities. What makes this study unique is its special attention to environmental priorities within urban sustainability planning. This subject is topical and would appeal to both scholars and practitioners at local, regional, national, and global scales.

This book was released on 2024-11-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annual report monitors and evaluates agricultural policies in 54 countries, including the 38 OECD countries, the five non‐OECD EU Member States, and 11 emerging economies. It finds that despite some modest declines in recent years, support to agriculture has remained close to recent historical highs. While changes in support have been limited, agricultural policies have been both reactive and proactive, boosting the sector’s capacity to respond to current challenges while aiming to ensure that food systems are fit for purpose as future conditions evolve. This year’s report focuses on policies fostering sustainable productivity growth in agriculture. Governments are applying a large variety of approaches to improve productivity while preserving natural resources and reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The report notes, however, that clearly defined targets related to sustainable productivity growth and measurable indicators of progress are important to ensure that policies achieve their stated objectives. The report also notes that making more effective use of producer support to promote innovation and environmental sustainability on the farm, and refocusing overall support towards targeted R&D, can better leverage public spending to deliver public goods and sustainable productivity growth. In line with the 2022 OECD Agriculture Ministerial Declaration, the report identifies a seven-point policy agenda for making agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, and for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural support and markets.
