Book excerpt: This book has been specially planned to both commemorate and celebrate this milestone, and we have invited University of California, Irvine, professor Bert Scruggs to serve as guest editor to assist with its preparation and realization. The issue is divided into two parts: the first part is dedicated to a review of the publication history of the journal, its manner of selecting works to publish, as well as its contributions to the scholarly field. There are also research essays that consider the works chosen for translation themselves. The second part of the issue commemorates my retirement after more than forty years of teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The main objectives of my work have been the English translation and introduction of Taiwan Literature. We have, therefore, included articles that consider my poetry, English translation, and scholarly research.

Book excerpt: International concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental communities over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international publications are inte grated and scheduled to provide the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamina tion and toxicology. This series is reserved exclusively for the diversified litera ture on "toxic" chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic animals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tre mendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, pres ence, magnitude, fate, and toxicology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can find the latest impor tant world literature produced by these emerging areas of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these individuals need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest infor mation is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.

Book excerpt: The Second Edition of Sociology in Action: Social Problems is ideal for teachers who want to provide students with an active learning experience that relies less on lecturing and more on discussion, collaboration, self-directed investigation, observation, analysis, and reflection. This text is an effective tool for departments interested in bringing more students into the sociology major, as it provides students with concrete ways to make use of sociological training in the "real" world. Maxine P. Atkinson and Kathleen Odell Korgen engage students in active learning in class, on their own, and in their local communities, as they explore a range of social problems and consider sociological solutions to issues facing society today. Sociology In Action: Social Problems, Second Edition is one of the volumes in our "In Action" series of undergraduate sociology texts. The two signature features of this series are (1) a set of carefully developed and assignable learning activities in each chapter; and (2) chapters contributed by authors who are both experts in their subjects and committed to the kind of active learning promoted by the SIA texts. This title is accompanied by a complete teaching and learning package in SAGE Vantage, an intuitive learning platform that integrates quality SAGE textbook content with assignable multimedia activities and auto-graded assessments to drive student engagement and ensure accountability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How small-town America’s surprising success reshapes our understanding of the nation’s urban-rural divide, offering “the most balanced and broadest-ranging look at the topic” (Tyler Cowen, George Mason University). The Next Big Idea Club 2023 Must Read Book We are frequently told rural America is in crisis. According to many journalists, academics, and politicians, our small towns have been hollowed out by lost jobs, and residents have turned to opioids and right-wing extremism to cope with their pain and resentment. In fact, many rural towns are thriving. Commentators have fixated on the steep decline of one region—Appalachia—and overlooked the millions of rural Americans who are succeeding in the heartland. In The Overlooked Americans, public policy expert Elizabeth Currid-Halkett reveals that rural America has not been left behind the rest of the nation but instead is surprisingly successful. Drawing on deep research, including data and in-depth interviews, she traces how small towns are doing as well as, or better than, cities by many measures, including homeownership, income, and employment. She also shows how rural and urban Americans share core values, from opposing racism and upholding environmentalism to believing in democracy. Looking everywhere from Missouri to Minnesota to her hometown of Danville, Pennsylvania, Currid-Halkett ultimately reveals that the nation is less fractured by geography than many believe. This is an urgent appeal for Americans to reconnect across a rural-urban divide that isn’t so wide after all.

Book excerpt: For many humans, birds are the most fascinating group of animals and they are definitely among the best-known and studied organisms. Thanks to global citizen science data, we know that there are some 50 billion individual birds in the world at present, which is about six birds for every human on the planet. Birds have an important role as indicators of the state of the environment, giving them high public value. Human-related global impacts such as climate changes and accelerating urbanization force extant species to continuous adaptations, population modifications, or even outright extinction. This book includes nine chapters covering such topics as bird genetics, the colour of avian plumage, conservation problems, sustainable hunting, habitat disturbance, range expansion and introductions, and long-term bird population changes and challenges. A key chapter explains the genetic rules and reasons why we have continuously more bird species in the world and why we may end up having 7,000 species more than the present 11,000 species.
