Book Synopsis Ethnic Frontiers And Peripheries by : Oren Yiftachel
Download or read book Ethnic Frontiers And Peripheries written by Oren Yiftachel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The idea for editing this book originated during an international conference titled ""Regional Development: The Challenge of the Frontier,"" held in December 1993 at the Dead Sea and which was organized by the Negev Center for Regional Development at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. In this conference we noticed that little has been said about the impact of Israel's complex mosaic of ethnic groups on the shaping of the country's social and spatial frontiers. We have therefore endeavored to bring together a number of perspectives on the evolution of ethnic frontiers in Israel and the role they play in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Yet we later realized that ""frontier"" is too limited a term, and that it may through various processes have turned into a mosaic of spatial, social, economic, and political peripheries. More specifically we attempted to present the process of frontier development as perceived by Israel's ethnic and national minorities. We therefore invited contributions from various other Israeli experts on these issues: geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, and political scientists, which have now become the main body of chapters in this book. We trust that they are representative of the main dimensions of the subject."

Download or read book Wargaming Campaigns written by Henry Hyde and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative reference guide to building wargaming campaigns, featuring a full set of campaign rules, tips on creating maps, and more. Most miniature wargames take the form of simulating a single battle with the opponents either winning or losing and that’s that until the next game. Such games can be a fun test of tactical skill, but it can be even more rewarding if they form part of a wider campaign. In a campaign, the players commanding the forces have to make the decisions at the strategic level that determine the context of any battles that occur. The outcome of these battles will, in turn, have strategic consequences for the ongoing campaign. Although campaigns can be very rewarding, many wargamers are deterred by the need to produce maps and devise mechanisms for strategic movement, Intelligence, logistics, recruiting reinforcements, keeping track of casualties etc. Henry Hyde’s excellent book greatly eases this task with masses of sound advice, concrete suggestions and even a full set of campaign rules useful for any period. Whatever historical or fantasy setting you prefer, Henry shows that even simple campaigns can add extra fun to your gaming. Praise for Wargaming Campaigns “This big, thick tome contains everything you’d ever want to know about creating and running a wargame campaign.” —Historical Miniatures Gaming Society

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home to over 80 percent of all life on Earth, the ocean is the world’s largest carbon sink and a key source of food and economic security for billions of people. The relevance of the ocean for humanity's future is undisputed. However, the ocean’s great potential to drive economic growth and equitable job creation, sustain healthy ecosystems, and mitigate climate change is not yet fully recognised. Lack of awareness of this potential as well as management and governance challenges pose impediments. Until these impediments are removed, ocean ecosystems will continue to be degraded and opportunities for people lost. A transition and a clear path to a thriving and vibrant relationship between humans and the ocean are urgently needed. This open access collection of papers and reports identifies a path that is inspired by science, energised by engaged people, and emboldened by visionary leaders. These assessments of knowledge are commissioned by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel), which was established in September 2018 as a unique initiative led by heads of state and government from around the world, to showcase the latest leading-edge science, knowledge and state-of-the-art thinking on key ocean issues. Altogether, The Blue Compendium offers innovative ocean solutions in technology, policy, governance, and finance realms, that could help accelerate a transition to a more sustainable and prosperous relationship with the ocean.
