Book Synopsis The Mathematics Practitioner’s Guidebook for Collaborative Lesson Research by : Akihiko Takahashi
Download or read book The Mathematics Practitioner’s Guidebook for Collaborative Lesson Research written by Akihiko Takahashi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource provides mathematics educators with tools for conducting Collaborative Lesson Research (CLR), a form of Lesson Study developed out of the original Japanese Lesson Study and intended to improve student and teacher learning. Renowned mathematics education researchers Akihiko Takahashi and Geoffrey Wake bring together educators across the US and UK with first-hand experience using CLR in their schools. Readers will learn the essentials for an impactful Lesson Study directly from the scholars who coined the term, and benefit from the dual perspectives of math education researchers and teachers who have used CLR when reflecting on their own classroom pedagogy. These contributors define CLR and provide examples of successful CLR using real-life case studies, as well as introducing pathways for getting started and practical suggestions for implementation into different school environments. Across these examples, readers will: understand the essence of Lesson Study, considered as CLR, and its important features be advised what participants in CLR should expect to do (observing research lessons, designing lessons, teaching research lessons, facilitating post-lesson discussion, etc.) and provide guidance and support with this enactment be advised on how to develop, embed, and sustain CLR communities preview potential outcomes over time from undertaking CLR Research lesson proposals and plans to support readers in understanding CLR are also included. Ideal for practicing teachers, teacher leaders, teacher educators, and professional developers involved in mathematics teaching, this book offers first-of-its-kind entry points for CLR. Its combination of theory and practice will empower educators to implement this increasingly popular vehicle for understanding students’ learning of mathematics.
Download or read book Havens of Hope written by Shira Leibowitz and published by Redleaf Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havens of Hope shares the hopeful energy and positive transformation that is emerging through the early childhood education field in this historic time of pandemic, economic uncertainty, and protests for racial equity. It brings readers on a journey into the possibility for new approaches in education to learning emerging in response to the momentous challenges of our times. Deemed essential in most US states and many countries throughout the world, a substantial number of early childhood centers remained open throughout the worst days of pandemic, economic uncertainty, and protests for racial equity. Dr. Shira Leibowitz’s center, Discovery Village Child Care and Preschool, located in downstate, New York, was one of the first COVID hotspots in the country. Seeking connection and companionship, she and other early childhood educators globally joined together during the worst of times for support and reflection. Havens of Hope shares the stories of resilience, creativity, and growth of schools and educators across the country. Inspiring approaches to early childhood learning of the 20th century—Montessori, Waldorf, and especially Reggio, were born out of crisis. Could this be a founding moment? Might we be witnessing, and even participating in, the birth of new approaches to learning and care, resonating with the needs of our own times?
Book Synopsis Double-booked: Effects of overlap between school and farming calendars on education and child labor by : Allen IV, James
Download or read book Double-booked: Effects of overlap between school and farming calendars on education and child labor written by Allen IV, James and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across sub-Saharan Africa, countries with a greater percentage of overlapping days in their school and farming calendars also have lower primary school survival rates. In theory, greater overlap between the school and farming calendars should indeed reduce schooling investments, and farm-based child labor too, as it constrains the time allocation opportunity set for both productive activities. I causally identify such effects by leveraging a four-month shift to the school calendar in Malawi that exogenously changed the number of days that the school calendar overlapped with specific crop calendars, which differentially affected communities based on their pre-policy crop allotments. Using panel data for school-aged children, I find that a 10-day increase in school calendar overlap during peak farming periods significantly decreases school advancement by 0.34 grades (one lost grade for every three children) and the share of children engaged in peak-period household farming by 11 percentage points after four years. Secondary analyses reveal stronger negative schooling impacts for girls and poorer households driven by overlap with the labor-intensive planting period. A policy simulation illustrates that adapting the school calendar to minimize overlap with peak farming periods is a highly cost-effective educational intervention to increase school participation by better accommodating farm labor demand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To make the best decisions possible, middle leaders need to have a nuanced understanding of the consequences of their actions. In this pragmatic book, Adam Robbins aims to boost their role-specific expertise to help them achieve that goal - and offers them a preferable alternative to learning from their mistakes. Instead of relying on generic leadership theories, Middle Leadership Mastery collates perspectives from psychology and cognitive science to share evidence-informed guidance on a wide range of topics - from supporting staff and students in crisis and managing wellbeing, to quality-assuring teaching and curriculum design. Adam Robbins draws on his sixteen years' experience of teaching in a deprived area to illustrate his points with stories and anecdotes from the front line, demonstrating how middle leaders can better understand their context and deliver the best outcomes from a variety of starting points.
Book Synopsis Social Justice and Education in the 21st Century by : Willie Pearson Jr.
Download or read book Social Justice and Education in the 21st Century written by Willie Pearson Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-10 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is not an equal place. There are high- and low-income countries and high- and low-income households. For each group, there are differential educational opportunities, leading to differential educational outcomes and differential labor market opportunities. This pattern often reproduces the privileges and inequalities of groups in a society. This book explores this differentiation in education from a social justice lens. Comparing the United States and South Africa, this book analyzes each country’s developmental thinking on education, from human capital and human rights approaches, in both primary and higher education. The enclosed contributions draw from different disciplines including legal studies, sociology, psychology, computer science and public policy.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the South African Economy by : Arkebe Oqubay
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the South African Economy written by Arkebe Oqubay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 1120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sharing some characteristics with other middle-income countries, South Africa is a country with a unique economic history and distinctive economic features. It is a regional economic powerhouse that plays a significant role, not only in southern Africa and in the continent, but also as a member of BRICS. However, there has been a lack of structural transformation and weak economic growth, and South Africa faces the profound triple challenges of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Any meaningful debate about economic policies to address these challenges needs to be informed by a deep understanding of historical developments, robust empirical evidence, and rigorous analysis of South Africa's complex economic landscape. This volume seeks to provide a wide-ranging set of original, detailed, and state-of-the-art analytical perspectives that contribute to scientific knowledge as well as to well-informed and productive discourse on the South African economy. While concentrating on the more recent economic issues facing South Africa, the handbook also provides historical and political context. It offers an in-depth examination of strategic issues in the country's key economic sectors, and brings together diverse analytical perspectives.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of University-Community Partnerships in Planning Education by : Megan E. Heim LaFrombois
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of University-Community Partnerships in Planning Education written by Megan E. Heim LaFrombois and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook explores two guiding questions – how can university-community partnerships in planning education work, and how can they be transformative? University-community partnerships – often referred to as service-learning or community-engaged teaching and learning – are traditionally based on a collaborative relationship between an academic partner and a community-based partner, in which students from the academic partner work within the community on a project. Transformational approaches to university-community partnerships are approaches that develop and sustain mutually beneficial collaborations where knowledge is co-created and new ways of knowing and doing are discovered. This edited volume examines a variety of university-community partnerships in planning education, from a number of different perspectives, with a focus on transformative models. The authors explore broader theoretical issues, including topics relating to pedagogy, planning theory, and curriculum; along with more practical topics relating to best practices, logistics, institutional support, outcome measures, and the various forms these partnerships can take – all through an array of case studies. The authors, which include academics, professional practitioners, academic practitioners, and students, bring an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge and experience from across the globe – Australia, Canada, Chile, Europe (including Germany, Spain, Slovakia, and Sweden), India, Jamaica, South Korea, and the United States.
