Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Computer Aided Control System Design (CACSD) of the direct process controller. Various methods and tools, representing an up-to-date level of development, are presented by leading experts. Several articles describe main principles and problems associated with modern direct control and with CACSD. Existing tools are presented, including packages for stability analysis of nonlinear systems, adaptive control design and integrated analysis, and simulation and tuning of controllers. The reader can observe that it is possible to develop CACSD tools by using open general packages such as Matlab or Simulab, or by providing specialised software. He can then compare both approaches and get an improved understanding of their respective advantages and disadvantages. The leading article by the editors presents CACSD Methods and tools in a broader context. There is also detailed material on upper control layers, hierarchical control, and real-time systems.

Book excerpt: This book describes an effective approach to the cooperative and coordinated control of multivehicle systems. This rigorous analytic approach guarantees the stability of coordinated and cooperating vehicles using distributed protocols and uses low-energy, event-triggered mechanisms for networked vehicle control. The text covers: design of a cooperative protocol to achieve consensus for multivehicle systems, allowing cooperation that is resistant to the effects of packet loss and/or adversarial attack; analysis and synthesis of an event-triggering mechanism for cooperative multivehicle systems over uncertain networks; and the problem of distributed leader-following consensus and methods for compelling multivehicle systems to reach consensus. Throughout the book, cooperation problems are transformed into stability problems. Lyapunov theory is used to guarantee cooperation among agents. The distributed approach is applied to triggering mechanisms, the cooperation process, and the impact of cyber-attacks. Discrete-time analysis shows how the event-based structure can be designed to match the performance of continuous-time counterparts. The book details applications and computer simulation with several practical examples. This book is of interest to a wide audience from the graduate student, through the academic researcher to the industrial practitioner, all of them sharing a common interest in the stability and security of multiagent systems.

Book excerpt: This volume collects papers, based on invited talks given at the IMA workshop in Modeling, Stochastic Control, Optimization, and Related Applications, held at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, University of Minnesota, during May and June, 2018. There were four week-long workshops during the conference. They are (1) stochastic control, computation methods, and applications, (2) queueing theory and networked systems, (3) ecological and biological applications, and (4) finance and economics applications. For broader impacts, researchers from different fields covering both theoretically oriented and application intensive areas were invited to participate in the conference. It brought together researchers from multi-disciplinary communities in applied mathematics, applied probability, engineering, biology, ecology, and networked science, to review, and substantially update most recent progress. As an archive, this volume presents some of the highlights of the workshops, and collect papers covering a broad range of topics.

This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis proposes an algorithmic controller synthesis based on the computation of probabilistic reachable sets for stochastic hybrid systems. Hybrid systems consist in general of a composition of discrete and continuous valued dynamics, and are able to capture a wide range of physical phenomena. The stochasticity is considered in form of normally distributed initial continuous states and normally distributed disturbances, resulting in stochastic hybrid systems. The reachable sets describe all states, which are reachable by a system for a given initialization of the system state, inputs, disturbances, and time horizon. For stochastic hybrid systems, these sets are probabilistic, since the system state and disturbance are random variables. This thesis introduces probabilistic reachable sets with a predefined confidence, which are used in an optimization based procedure for the determination of stabilizing control inputs. Besides the stabilizing property, the controlled dynamics also observes input constraints, as well as, so-called chance constraints for the continuous state. The main contribution of this thesis is the formulation of an algorithmic control procedure for each considerd type of stochastic hybrid systems, where different discrete dynamics are considered. First, a control procedure for a deterministic system with bounded disturbances is introduced, and thereafter a probabilistic distribution of the system state and the disturbance is assumed. The formulation of probabilistic reachable sets with a predefined confidence is subsequently used in a control procedure for a stochastic hybrid system, in which the switch of the continuous dynamics is externally induced. Finally, the control procedure based on reachable set computation is extended to a type of stochastic hybrid systems with autonomously switching of the continuous dynamics.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we employ set-theoretic properties of additively disturbed linear discrete-time systems to develop stabilizing aperiodically updated control laws for plants controlled over communication networks. In particular, we design event-triggered and self-triggered controllers with a priori guarantees on closed-loop characteristics such as stability, asymptotic bound, and average communication rate. Different models for the disturbances are taken into account, namely arbitrary disturbances of which only a bound in the form of a compact set is known and stochastic disturbances with known probability distribution. For setups with hard constraints on the states and inputs, we propose aperiodic schemes based on robust model predictive control methods. Both the full information (state-feedback) case, as well as the limited information (output-feedback) case are investigated. It is demonstrated that the proposed controllers achieve a considerable reduction in the required network usage with only moderate or non-existing deterioration of the closed-loop properties guaranteed by comparable controllers that transmit information at every point in time.
