Book excerpt: As a Chinese saying goes, “Look at the weather when you step out; look at men’s faces when you step in.” Recognizing expressions is a very common activity in daily life. People can infer someone’s inner emotions from his or her facial expressions. However, not everyone writes their emotion on their face; someone may suppress true emotion and express a false facial expression depending on politeness, context, culture, or status. The suppressed expressions can be expressed fleetingly in the form of microexpressions, which usually last only 1/25 to 1/5 second. Microexpressions were of importance for many practical applications because it reflects the true inner feeling, such as national security, deception detection, clinical therapy, emotion analysis, and human-computer interaction. The recognition of microexpressions is the premise of application of microexpression and now the recognition of microexpressions are getting more and more attention. However, perceiving other’s microexpressions is not easy. The context, culture, and perceiver himself affect the recognition of microexpression. There are considerable efforts in the field of psychology, neuroscience, and computer science to recognize facial microexpressions. This Researc Topic illuminates the latest advances in interdisciplinary understanding how microexpressions are perceived and recognized. The authors contribute from diverse perspectives in the current research topic by using behavioral experiment, EEG, fMRI, and computer vision techniques. They investigated how humans recognize macroexpressions and microexpressions in term of modulating factors (e.g., gender, duration) and the underlying neural mechanisms, and how machine recognition algorithms and models are developed and inspired by the human recognition data. The Research Topic reveals that research on the recognition of microexpressions is diverse but progressing. This is not surprising given that this topic receives more and more attention due to its promising potential applications. As new techniques and theories develop, it is likely that efficient and effective algorithms for recognizing microexpression will become possible. We hope that these articles provide a look into that future.

Book excerpt: This book presents a synthesis of the research carried out in the Laboratory of Signal Processing and Communications (LaPSyC), CONICET, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina, since 2003. It presents models and techniques widely used by the signal processing community, focusing on low-complexity methodologies that are scalable to different applications. It also highlights measures of the performance and impact of each compensation technique. The book is divided into three parts: 1) basic models 2) compensation techniques and 3) applications in advanced technologies. The first part addresses basic architectures of transceivers, their component blocks and modulation techniques. It also describes the performance to be taken into account, regardless of the distortions that need to be compensated. In the second part, several schemes of compensation and/or reduction of imperfections are explored, including linearization of power amplifiers, compensation of the characteristics of analog-to- digital converters and CFO compensation for OFDM modulation. The third and last part demonstrates the use of some of these techniques in modern wireless-communication systems, such as full-duplex transmission, massive MIMO schemes and Internet of Things applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advances in the technology and methodology for human movement capture and analysis over the last decade have been remarkable. Besides acknowledged approaches for kinematic, dynamic, and electromyographic (EMG) analysis carried out in the laboratory, more recently developed devices, such as wearables, inertial measurement units, ambient sensors, and cameras or depth sensors, have been adopted on a wide scale. Furthermore, computational intelligence (CI) methods, such as artificial neural networks, have recently emerged as promising tools for the development and application of intelligent systems in motion analysis. Thus, the synergy of classic instrumentation and novel smart devices and techniques has created unique capabilities in the continuous monitoring of motor behaviors in different fields, such as clinics, sports, and ergonomics. However, real-time sensing, signal processing, human activity recognition, and characterization and interpretation of motion metrics and behaviors from sensor data still representing a challenging problem not only in laboratories but also at home and in the community. This book addresses open research issues related to the improvement of classic approaches and the development of novel technologies and techniques in the domain of motion analysis in all the various fields of application.

Book excerpt: This book, gathering the Proceedings of the 2018 Computing Conference, offers a remarkable collection of chapters covering a wide range of topics in intelligent systems, computing and their real-world applications. The Conference attracted a total of 568 submissions from pioneering researchers, scientists, industrial engineers, and students from all around the world. These submissions underwent a double-blind peer review process. Of those 568 submissions, 192 submissions (including 14 poster papers) were selected for inclusion in these proceedings. Despite computer science’s comparatively brief history as a formal academic discipline, it has made a number of fundamental contributions to science and society—in fact, along with electronics, it is a founding science of the current epoch of human history (‘the Information Age’) and a main driver of the Information Revolution. The goal of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers to present fundamental contributions, and to be a premier venue for academic and industry practitioners to share new ideas and development experiences. This book collects state of the art chapters on all aspects of Computer Science, from classical to intelligent. It covers both the theory and applications of the latest computer technologies and methodologies. Providing the state of the art in intelligent methods and techniques for solving real-world problems, along with a vision of future research, the book will be interesting and valuable for a broad readership.

Book excerpt: Group and Crowd Behavior for Computer Vision provides a multidisciplinary perspective on how to solve the problem of group and crowd analysis and modeling, combining insights from the social sciences with technological ideas in computer vision and pattern recognition. The book answers many unresolved issues in group and crowd behavior, with Part One providing an introduction to the problems of analyzing groups and crowds that stresses that they should not be considered as completely diverse entities, but as an aggregation of people. Part Two focuses on features and representations with the aim of recognizing the presence of groups and crowds in image and video data. It discusses low level processing methods to individuate when and where a group or crowd is placed in the scene, spanning from the use of people detectors toward more ad-hoc strategies to individuate group and crowd formations. Part Three discusses methods for analyzing the behavior of groups and the crowd once they have been detected, showing how to extract semantic information, predicting/tracking the movement of a group, the formation or disaggregation of a group/crowd and the identification of different kinds of groups/crowds depending on their behavior. The final section focuses on identifying and promoting datasets for group/crowd analysis and modeling, presenting and discussing metrics for evaluating the pros and cons of the various models and methods. This book gives computer vision researcher techniques for segmentation and grouping, tracking and reasoning for solving group and crowd modeling and analysis, as well as more general problems in computer vision and machine learning. - Presents the first book to cover the topic of modeling and analysis of groups in computer vision - Discusses the topics of group and crowd modeling from a cross-disciplinary perspective, using social science anthropological theories translated into computer vision algorithms - Focuses on group and crowd analysis metrics - Discusses real industrial systems dealing with the problem of analyzing groups and crowds
