Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technologies for wireless communications, including 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), require more complex antennas, practitioners need more information on the best methods to perform measurements on these different types of antennas. This exciting resource provides guidance on the proper design of indoor ranges for RF antenna measurements. The important aspects of specifying the range or resources needed in a development program are explored. Analysis of existing ranges to determine their suitability for performing specific test that a user of the range may require is also introduced. Readers find in-depth coverage of the design of ranges and how to evaluate the error contributions of the range and the best approach to measure a system, antenna, or other radiating hardware. The book provides information on selecting the right range to make a specific type of measurement and understanding for an RF absorber. Matlab scripts are also included to help readers estimate the performance of an RF absorber. Readers will be able to estimate the required space for a given type of measurement, as well as identify what type of range is the better choice, based on physical limitations and economics. Simple rules for the design of an anechoic chamber, based on the required accuracy and parameters to be measured are described. Packed with examples and references, this book is a prime reference for any practitioner that uses or designs facilities for the measurement of electromagnetic energy.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the design challenges in near-field wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, such as high efficiency, compact size, and long transmission range. It presents new low-profile designs for the TX/RX structures using different shapes of defected ground structures (DGS) like (H, semi-H, and spiral-strips DGS). Most near-field WPT systems depend on magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) using 3-D wire loops or helical antennas, which are often bulky. This, in turn, poses technical difficulties in their application in small electronic devices and biomedical implants. To obtain compact structures, printed spiral coils (PSCs) have recently emerged as a candidate for low-profile WPT systems. However, most of the MRC WPT systems that use PSCs have limitations in the maximum achievable efficiency due to the feeding method. Inductive feeding constrains the geometric dimensions of the main transmitting (TX)/receiving (RX) resonators, which do not achieve the maximum achievable unloaded quality factor. This book will be of interest to researchers and professionals working on WPT-related problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than 20 years since the seminal publications on side-channel attacks. They aim at extracting secrets from embedded systems while they execute cryptographic algorithms, and they consist of two steps, measurement and analysis. This book tackles the analysis part, especially under situations where the targeted device is protected by random masking. The authors explain advances in the field and provide the reader with mathematical formalizations. They present all known analyses within the same notation framework, which allows the reader to rapidly understand and learn contrasting approaches. It will be useful as a graduate level introduction, also for self-study by researchers and professionals, and the examples are taken from real-world datasets.

Book excerpt: The Transportation Security Administration requested a study by the National Research Council (NRC) to establish the Committee on Airport Passenger Screening: Millimeter Wave Machines to evaluate two models of active millimeter wave scanners: the L3 ProVision 1 and L3 ProVision 2. Airport Passenger Screening Using Millimeter Wave Machines provides findings and recommendations on compliance with applicable health and safety guidelines and appropriateness of system design and procedures for preventing over exposure. This study addresses the issue of whether millimeter wave machines used at airports comply with existing guidelines and whether it would be possible for anything to go wrong with the machines so that, by mistake, it exposes a person to more than 10 W/m2.

Book excerpt: Medical applications of ultrasound range from therapy, foetal monitoring, diagnostic imaging and blood flow measurement, to surgery and lithotripsy. Ever since the earliest developments of medical ultrasound there has been an interest in the measurement and characterisation of the ultrasonic fields generated in these applications, either for assessment of performance of equipment or for safety. Until recently, procedures for acoustic output measurements were ill-defined, but standards are now being developed internationally by the International Electrotechnical Commission (1EC) and reliable commercial measuring equipment is becoming more widely available. The aim of this book is to introduce acoustic output measurement techniques and to provide an insight into the measurement methods. The material presented is based on a course originally run during November 1989 at the National Physical Laboratory. In addition to the lectures, the course consisted of a series of practicals to allow participants to gain experience of making measurements. Teddington, UK Roy C. Book excerpt: This vital new resource offers engineers and researchers a window on important new technology that will supersede the barcode and is destined to change the face of logistics and product data handling. In the last two decades, radio-frequency identification has grown fast, with accelerated take-up of RFID into the mainstream through its adoption by key users such as Wal-Mart, K-Mart and the US Department of Defense. RFID has many potential applications due to its flexibility, capability to operate out of line of sight, and its high data-carrying capacity. Yet despite optimistic projections of a market worth $25 billion by 2018, potential users are concerned about costs and investment returns. Clearly demonstrating the need for a fully printable chipless RFID tag as well as a powerful and efficient reader to assimilate the tag’s data, this book moves on to describe both. Introducing the general concepts in the field including technical data, it then describes how a chipless RFID tag can be made using a planar disc-loaded monopole antenna and an asymmetrical coupled spiral multi-resonator. The tag encodes data via the “spectral signature” technique and is now in its third-generation version with an ultra-wide band (UWB) reader operating at between 5 and 10.7GHz.
