Book Synopsis The Market in Poetry in the Persian World by : Shahzad Bashir
Download or read book The Market in Poetry in the Persian World written by Shahzad Bashir and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Poetic speech is a pearl, connected to the king's ear.' This statement gestures to words as objects of material value sought by those with power and resources. The author provides a sense for the texture of the Persian world by discussing what made poetry precious. By focusing on reports on poets' lives, they illuminate the social scene in which poetry was produced and consumed. The discussion elicits poetry's close connections to political and religious authority, economic exchange, and the articulation of gender. At the broadest level, the study substantiates the interdependency between cultural and material reproduction of society.

Book Synopsis Poetry & Commons by : Daniel Eltringham
Download or read book Poetry & Commons written by Daniel Eltringham and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commons and enclosure are among the most vital ways of thinking about poetry today, posing urgent ecological and political questions about land and resource ownership and use. Poetry & Commons is the first study to read postwar and contemporary poetry through this lens, by putting it in dialogue with the Romantic experience of agrarian dispossession. Employing an innovative transhistorical structure, the bookdemonstrates how radical Anglophone poetries since 1960 have returned to the 'enclosure of the commons' in response to political and ecological crises. It identifies a 'commons turn' in contemporary lyric that contests the new enclosures of globalized capital and resource extraction. In lucid close readings of a rich field of experimental poetries associated with the 'British Poetry Revival', as well as from Canada and the United States, it analyses a landscape poetics of enclosure in relationship with Romantic verse. Canonical Romantic poetry by Wordsworth and Clare is understood through the fine-grain textures of the period’s vernacular and radical verse and discourse around enclosure, which the book demonstrates contain the seeds of neoliberal political economy. Engaging with the work of Anne-Lise François and Anna Tsing, Poetry & Commons theorizes commoning as marking out subsistence 'rhythms of resource', which articulate plural, irregular, and tentative relations between human and nonhuman lifeworlds.

Book Synopsis Teaching to Exceed the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards by : Richard Beach
Download or read book Teaching to Exceed the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards written by Richard Beach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the new English Language Arts Common Core State Standards take hold across the United States, the need grows for pre-service and in-service teachers to be ready to develop curriculum and instruction that addresses their requirements. This timely, thoughtful, and comprehensive text directly meets this need. It delineates a literacy practices and critical engagement curriculum framework for 6-12 English language arts education that explains and illustrates how the Standards’ highest and best intentions for student success can be implemented from a critical, culturally relevant perspective that is firmly grounded in current literacy learning theory and research. The first 6-12 English language arts methods text to be aligned with the Standards, this book also addresses their limitations — formalist assumptions about literacy learning, limited attention to media/digital literacies, lack of attention to critical literacies, and questionable assumptions about linking standards and text complexity to specific grade levels. Specific examples of teachers using the literacy practices/critical engagement curriculum framework in their classrooms shows how these limitations can be surpassed. Features • Moves the CCSS framework into a view that literacy is a contextualized, social practice • Challenges simplistic models that homogenize adolescent learners • Adds the important element of critical literacy to English language arts classrooms • Provides specific examples of teachers in action implementing these practices • Interactive Companion Website with student and instructor resources. The Website is designed to foster interactivity through participation in an online teaching planning simulation with a text, video, or case on one side of the screen and a chat box for instructors and students to share their reactions and planning ideas. The Companion Website is linked to a wiki that serves as a repository for links, activities/units, and further reading.
