This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Development in American Cities addresses the roles of municipal leaders and civic partners in promoting social equity by examining the experiences of five American cities in the 1990s—Austin, Cleveland, Rochester, Savannah, and Seattle. These five cities were chosen for their activist municipal administrations, robust policy agendas, and viable partnerships. Contributors familiar with each city evaluate the impact of equity investments and extract lessons for municipal leaders and policy agendas. Building on the past experiences of progressive cities, each case study city offers fresh perspectives and examples, told through a rigorous analysis of socioeconomic data and program outcomes combined with engaging stories about specific municipal administrations and policy agendas.

Book Synopsis Change Research by : Corey S. Shdaimah
Download or read book Change Research written by Corey S. Shdaimah and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborating with community members adds a critical dimension to social work research, providing practitioners with intimate knowledge of a community's goals and needs while equipping community advocates with vital skills for social change. Sharing the inspiring story of one such partnership, Corey Shdaimah, Roland Stahl, and Sanford F. Schram recount their efforts working with an affordable housing coalition in Philadelphia, helping activists research low-income home ownership and repair. Their collaboration helped create the Philadelphia Housing Trust Fund, which funnels millions of dollars to people in need. This volume describes the origins of their partnership and its growth, including developing tensions and their diffusion in ways that contributed to the research. The authors personalize methods of research and the possibilities for advocacy, ultimately connecting their encounters to more general, critical themes. Building on the field's commitment to social justice, they effectively demonstrate the potential of change research to facilitate widespread, long-term difference and improve community outcomes.
Book Synopsis Community Planning by : Eric Damian Kelly
Download or read book Community Planning written by Eric Damian Kelly and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces community planning as practiced in the United States, focusing on the comprehensive plan. Sometimes known by other names—especially master plan or general plan—the type of plan described here is the predominant form of general governmental planning in the U.S. Although many government agencies make plans for their own programs or facilities, the comprehensive plan is the only planning document that considers multiple programs and that accounts for activities on all land located within the planning area, including both public and private property. Written by a former president of the American Planning Association, Community Planning is thorough, specific, and timely. It addresses such important contemporary issues as sustainability, walkable communities, the role of urban design in public safety, changes in housing needs for a changing population, and multi-modal transportation planning. Unlike competing books, it addresses all of these topics in the context of the local comprehensive plan. There is a broad audience for this book: planning students, practicing planners, and individual citizens who want to better understand local planning and land use controls. Boxes at the end of each chapter explain how professional planners and individual citizens, respectively, typically engage the issues addressed in the chapter. For all readers, Community Planning provides a pragmatic view of the comprehensive plan, clearly explained by a respected authority.

Book Synopsis Housing as Governance by : Astrid Ley
Download or read book Housing as Governance written by Astrid Ley and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamic roles and linkages of public sector institutions and civil society actors in housing provision for the urban poor in South Africa. Based on actor-centred and network theories, two cases of civil society alliances are analysed. The book reveals that existing civil society structures are hybrids that can oscillate between networks and organisations. Moreover, they establish informal governance spaces with state actors outside the institutional channels provided by government. The emergence of oscillating structures and the informalisation of horizontal governance represent new challenges for local decision-making processes. Co-operation and action-oriented approaches in housing seemingly need to be based on a more detailed understanding of the complex interfaces, which go far beyond the conventional ideal of partnerships and participation between sectors.

Book Synopsis Homelessness in Nigeria by : Ifeadikanwa Chidebell
Download or read book Homelessness in Nigeria written by Ifeadikanwa Chidebell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homelessness in Nigeria: Investigating Africas Housing Crisis, is a daring confrontation of a topic considered taboo in Africa. Equally daring is the nature and depth of information it provides through a holistic exploration of the subject of homelessness as it occurs in Africa and in the majority of the poor nations of the modern world. But Nigeria is a wealthy nation, given its vast human and natural resources. So, why has homelessness remained a challenge to this nation? How and when did homelessness become part of the Nigerian culture? Is there such a word as homelessness in any Nigerian or other African languages? Who and what has been generating this housing dilemma? What policy and practices are in place that perpetuate or attempt to address homelessness in the region? What are the housed- and homeless Nigerians views of this predicament? What is the predictable future of Nigerias homelessness quandary? These questions and more find responses in this book, as it explores the antecedents, the origins, and the current state of homelessness in that nation. To respond effectively to these numerous questions it examines the land use policy, housing and economic policy, past and present, as well as the history and status of housing codes, the building and rental laws in effect, comparing them with actual practices. This exercise exposes the significant roles of culture and emerging world view imports, as well as the direct roles of stakeholders, rulers and the ruled alike, in the dynamics of the homelessness scourge. In its quest for deep insights into homelessness, which spans over nine years of information search, I have drawn from a wide range of literary work. And, for the purposes of first hand information gathering on this poorly researched subject. I invested in inter-continental travels. Direct interactions with homeless and housed persons in the target location, as well as communication with Africans in the Diaspora has contributed even more comprehensive information on the underlying causes, nature and status of shelter poverty among Africans. There is a strong emphasizes in this book of the dominant roles of culture, religion and sectional politics in the creation and perpetuation of Africas homelessness and housing crises. And insights into this dynamic unveil answers to crucial, unanswered questions on homelessness in Africa as no known existing literature ever has. Meanwhile, in the guise of a tool of advocacy against homelessness and its accompanying stigma, this document is diametrically opposed to the shroud that mask the unconscionable injustice that is homelessness, particularly in communal-based, wealthy social environment, such as Nigeria. In these ways this work offers ample information to Africans and all stakeholders in the homelessness eradication struggle. Grassroot populations, policymakers, invested foreign non- profit agencies, and all stake holders alike, will find within these pages numerous significant facts on homelessness as it occurs in modern developing nations. They will equally discover viable suggestions for combating and addressing shelter loss. Homelessness in Nigeria is indeed a vital reference- as well as literary hand book for all who seek knowledge on African cultures, and, indeed, on cultures of the general Global South nations, and even more pointedly in matters of culture associated with housing. Professionals from all walks of life will thus find this a source of much insight in understanding regional diversity with regard to values relative to shelter deprivation.
