Book excerpt: th It is our great privilege and honor to present the proceedings of the 18 International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory (ISTTT), held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, China on 16-18 July 2009. th The 18 ISTTT is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies and Department of Civil and Structural Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The ISTTT series is the main gathering for the world’s transportation and traffic theorists, and those who are interested in contributing to or gaining a deep understanding of traffic and transportation phenomena in order to better plan, design and manage the transportation system. Although it embraces a wide range of topics, from traffic flow theories and demand modeling to road safety and logistics and supply chain modeling, the ISTTT is hallmarked by its intellectual innovation, research and development excellence in the treatment of real-world transportation and traffic problems. The ISTTT prides itself in the extremely high quality of its proceedings. Previous ISTTT conferences were held in Warren, Michigan (1959), London (1963), New York (1965), Karlsruhe (1968), Berkeley, California (1971), Sydney (1974), Kyoto (1977), Toronto (1981), Delft (1984), Cambridge, Massachusetts (1987), Yokohama (1990), Berkeley, California (1993), Lyon (1996), Jerusalem (1999), Adelaide (2002), College Park, Maryland (2005), and London (2007). th th This 18 ISTTT celebrates the 50 Anniversary of this premier conference series.

Book excerpt: ADVANCED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNET THIRD EDITION ADVANCED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNET Future Evolving Technologies The new edition of Advanced Wireless Communications: 4G Cognitive and Cooperative Broadband Technology, 2nd Edition, including the latest developments In the evolution of wireless communications, the dominant challenges are in the areas of networking and their integration with the Future Internet. Even the classical concept of cellular networks is changing and new technologies are evolving to replace it. To reflect these new trends, Advanced Wireless Communications & INTERNET builds upon the previous volumes, enhancing the existing chapters, and including a number of new topics. Systematically guiding readers from the fundamentals through to advanced areas, each chapter begins with an introductory explanation of the basic problems and solutions followed with an analytical treatment in greater detail. The most important aspects of new emerging technologies in wireless communications are comprehensively covered including: next generation Internet; cloud computing and network virtualization; economics of utility computing and wireless grids and clouds. This gives readers an essential understanding of the overall environment in which future wireless networks will be operating. Furthermore, a number of methodologies for maintaining the network connectivity, by using tools ranging from genetic algorithms to stochastic geometry and random graphs theory, and a discussion on percolation and connectivity, are also offered. The book includes a chapter on network formation games, covering the general models, knowledge based network formation games, and coalition games in wireless ad hoc networks. Illustrates points throughout using real-life case studies drawn from the author’s extensive international experience in the field of telecommunications Fully updated to include the latest developments, key topics covered include: advanced routing and network coding; network stability control; relay-assisted Wireless Networks; multicommodity flow optimization problems, flow optimization in heterogeneous networks, and dynamic resource allocation in computing clouds Methodically guides readers through each topic from basic to advanced areas Focuses on system elements that provide adaptability and re-configurability, and discusses how these features can improve wireless communications system performance Enjoyed this book? Book excerpt: With the advent of wavelength routing and dynamic, reconfigurable optical networks, new demands are being made in the design and operation of optical amplifiers. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of optical amplifier technology in the context of these recent advances in the field. It demonstrates how to manage the trade-offs between amplifier design, network architecture and system management and operation. The book provides an overview of optical amplifiers and reconfigurable networks before examining in greater detail the issues of importance to network operators and equipment manufacturers, including 40G and 100G transmission. Optical amplifier design is fully considered, focusing on fundamentals, design solutions and amplifier performance limitations. Finally, the book discusses other emerging applications for optical amplifiers such as optical networks for high data rate systems, free space systems, long single span links and optical digital networks. This book will be of great value to R&D engineers, network and systems engineers, telecommunications service providers, component suppliers, industry analysts, network operators, postgraduate students, academics and anyone seeking to understand emerging trends in optical networks and the consequent changes in optical amplifier design, features and applications. Book excerpt: This project entailed the design, development, testing, and evaluation of intersection decision support (IDS) systems to address straight crossing path (SCP) intersection crashes. This type of intersection crash is responsible for more than 100,000 crashes and thousands of fatalities each year. In developing these IDS systems for both signalized and stop-controlled intersections, a top-down systems approach was used that determined the necessary system functions and evaluated the capability of different technologies to perform those functions. Human factors tests were also conducted that evaluated the effectiveness of warning algorithms and infrastructure-based driver-infrastructure interfaces in eliciting a stopping response from drivers about to be involved in an SCP intersection crash. Results indicated that further technological development is needed for the sensing and intersection state IDS functions. Furthermore, infrastructure-based warning interfaces tested were greatly outperformed by previously-tested in-vehicle warnings. Thus, future research on IDS systems should focus on their infrastructure-cooperative configuration, where the system supports an in-vehicle warning.

Book excerpt: "Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) provide a proven set of strategies for addressing the challenges of assuring safety and reducing congestion, while accommodating the growth in transit ridership and freight movement. This report presents information on the performance of deployed ITS under each of these goal areas, as well as information on the costs, deployment levels, and lessons learned regarding ITS deployment and operations. The report, and the collection of four Web-based resources upon which it is based, have been developed by the U.S. DOT's ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) to support informed decision making regarding ITS deployment. This report discusses 17 different areas of ITS application. These chapters are divided into two sections discussing technologies deployed on the transportation infrastructure and those deployed within vehicles. The 14 different infrastructure applications discussed can be grouped into ITS strategies applied to roadways, transit, management and operations of transportation systems, and freight movement. Lessons learned during ITS planning implementation and deployment, are highlighted throughout the report and in a chapter following the review of ITS applications."--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration estimates that red light running causes more than 100,000 crashes and 1,000 fatalities annually and results in an estimated economic loss of over $14 billion per year in the United States. In Iowa alone, a statewide analysis of red light running crashes, using crash data from 2001 to 2006, indicates than an average of 1,682 red light running crashes occur at signalized intersections every year. As a result, red light running poses a significant safety issue for communities. Communities rarely have the resources to place additional law enforcement in the field to combat the problem and they are increasingly using automated red light running camera-enforcement systems at signalized intersections. In Iowa, three communities currently use camera enforcement since 2004. These communities include Davenport, Council Bluffs, and Clive. As communities across the United States attempt to address red light running, a number of communities have implemented red light running camera enforcement programs. This report examines the red light running program in Iowa and summarizes results of analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of such cameras.
