Book Synopsis Creoles, Their Substrates, and Language Typology by : Claire Lefebvre
Download or read book Creoles, Their Substrates, and Language Typology written by Claire Lefebvre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since creole languages draw their properties from both their substrate and superstrate sources, the typological classification of creoles has long been a major issue for creolists, typologists, and linguists in general. Several contradictory proposals have been put forward in the literature. For example, creole languages typologically pair with their superstrate languages (Chaudenson 2003), with their substrate languages (Lefebvre 1998), or even, creole languages are alike (Bickerton 1984) such that they constitute a definable typological class (McWhorter 1998). This book contains 25 chapters bearing on detailed comparisons of some 30 creoles and their substrate languages. As the substrate languages of these creoles are typologically different, the detailed investigation of substrate features in the creoles leads to a particular answer to the question of how creoles should be classified typologically. The bulk of the data show that creoles reproduce the typological features of their substrate languages. This argues that creoles cannot be claimed to constitute a definable typological class."
Book Synopsis Language Choice in Postcolonial Law by : Richard Powell
Download or read book Language Choice in Postcolonial Law written by Richard Powell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses multilingual postcolonial common law, focusing on Malaysia’s efforts to shift the language of law from English to Malay, and weighing the pros and cons of planned language shift as a solution to language-based disadvantage before the law in jurisdictions where the majority of citizens lack proficiency in the traditional legal medium. Through analysis of legislation and policy documents, interviews with lawyers, law students and law lecturers, and observations of court proceedings and law lectures, the book reflects on what is entailed in changing the language of the law. It reviews the implications of societal bilingualism for postcolonial justice systems, and raises an important question for language planners to consider: if the language of the law is changed, what else about the law changes?
Book Synopsis Framing Indonesian Realities by : Peter J.M. Nas
Download or read book Framing Indonesian Realities written by Peter J.M. Nas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual language, wild and domestic animals, and objects of material culture like houses, palaces, and works of art, are often loaded with symbolic meaning. Reading the landscape , or giving meaning to the natural environment, is a cultural act as well, and one must discover what mountains, coastlines, and islands mean to different groups of people. In this book, written on the occasion of Professor Reimar Schefold s retirement from the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Leiden University, colleagues and former students from the Netherlands and abroad demonstrate the variety and wealth of the field of symbolic anthropology. The regional focus of the book is Indonesia. The studies presented range from small island communities in western, northern, and eastern Indonesia to urban settlements in Java and Sumatra. All the contributions are in one way or another related to Reimar Schefold s work over the past thirty-five years, work that includes extensive studies on material culture, rituals, and the use of symbols in the expression of ethnicity among the various cultural groups of Indonesia.

Book Synopsis Southern Min (Hokkien) as a Migrating Language by : Picus Sizhi Ding
Download or read book Southern Min (Hokkien) as a Migrating Language written by Picus Sizhi Ding and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents multilingualism as a social phenomenon, which arises when speakers of a different language move to a new society and learn to speak the dominant language of the society. It offers case studies of Hokkien migrating families when they encounter new languages in Burma, Macao and San Francisco, showing how a family changes across generations from monolingual to bilingual/multilingual and back to monolingual. In the process language shift occurs as a result of transitional bilingualism. The dynamic status of Hokkien is also attested at the societal level in Singapore, Taiwan and south Fujian, the homeland of Hokkien.
