Book Synopsis Life Begins at 60 - 40 - 20 - 0 by : Betty Undlin
Download or read book Life Begins at 60 - 40 - 20 - 0 written by Betty Undlin and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a memoir. Upon reflection, a haphazard upbringing, with its diverse locations and vocations, brought Betty Undlin to an age where she could consider what had mattered and why, what had made her laugh and what had made her cry. In the process, she realized that, in her case, challenging life changes appeared in twenty-year segments. Whereas the general concept of life is that everything tapers off at about 60, she has not found that to be true. Betty believes that if you refuse to limit yourself to your calendar age, 60 - 80 can even be the best! Undlin's memoir will keep you entertained as you work your way through her most significant events. More than that, it will remind you that life begins at any age you like! About the Author Betty Undlin is a product of Texas and the Bay Area of California. After college, she joined the Foreign Service of the State Department and was sent to Sao Paulo, Brazil. There, she met her husband, Russell. When they returned to the States, Russell continued his career in foreign trade. Russ and Betty traveled abroad extensively, then bought a manufacturing business in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were active in that business until their retirement in 1990. After a 6-month unexpected assignment in Mozambique, they settled wholeheartedly into prison ministry. Russ developed an aftercare ministry for Christian men coming out of prison, and Betty taught the Bible in prisons throughout Arizona. These activities culminated in 2003 with the opening of The Bridge, a Christian halfway house. The Bridge opened in February of 2003. In August of 2003, Russ died suddenly. Since that time, Betty has continued to manage The Bridge, with its ever-changing group of "sons."
Book Synopsis America in the Forties by : Ronald Allen Goldberg
Download or read book America in the Forties written by Ronald Allen Goldberg and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America in the Forties, Goldberg energetically argues that the decade of the 1940s was one of the most influential in American history: a period marked by war, sacrifice, and profound social changes. With superb detail, Goldberg traces the entire decade from the first stirrings of war in a nation consumed by the Great Depression to the conflicts with Europe and Japan to the start of the Cold War and the dawn of the atomic age. Richly drawn portraits of the period's charismatic, brilliant, and often controversial leaders-Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Harry Truman-demonstrate their immense importance in shaping the era and, in turn, the course of American government, politics, and society. Goldberg chronicles U.S. heroic accomplishments during World War II and the early Cold War, showing how these military and diplomatic achievements helped lay the foundation for the country's current role in economic and military affairs worldwide. Combining an engrossing narrative with intelligent analysis, America in the Forties enriches our understanding of that pivotal era.

Book Synopsis The Case Against Adolescence by : Robert Epstein
Download or read book The Case Against Adolescence written by Robert Epstein and published by Quill Driver Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book argues that adolescence is an unnecessary period of life that people are better off without. Robert Epstein, former editor-in-chief of "Psychology Today," shows that teen turmoil is caused by outmoded systems put into place a century ago which destroyed the continuum between childhood and adulthood. Where this continuum still exists in other countries, there is no adolescence. Isolated from adults, American teens learn everything they know from their media-dominated peers--"the last people on earth they should be learning from," says Epstein. Epstein explains that our teens are highly capable--in some ways more capable than adults--and argues strongly against "infantilizing" young people. We must rediscover "the adult in every teen," he says, by giving young people adult authority and responsibility as soon as they can demonstrate readiness. This landmark book will change the thinking about teens for decades to come.

A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."
Book Synopsis Forties Film Funnymen by : Wes D. Gehring
Download or read book Forties Film Funnymen written by Wes D. Gehring and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve classic comedy films examined within these pages are distinguished by an equal number of defining comic performances. Ranging from The Great Dictator (1940) to A Southern Yankee (1948), each film focuses on the most central theme of "clown comedy": Resilience, the encouragement or hope that one can survive the most daunting of life's dilemmas--even during the war-torn 1940s. And each film can be regarded as a microcosm of the antiheroic world of its central clown (or clowns). Among the performers represented are Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Abbott and Costello, Jack Benny, Eddie Bracken, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, the Marx Brothers, Harold Lloyd and Red Skelton. This lavishly illustrated work includes an introduction by noted film critic and historian Anthony Slide.
