Book excerpt: This book addresses a range of real-world issues including industrial activity, energy management, education, business and health. Today, technology is a part of virtually every human activity, and is used to support, monitor and manage equipment, facilities, commodities, industry, business, and individuals’ health, among others. As technology evolves, new applications, methods and techniques arise, while at the same time citizens’ expectations from technology continue to grow. In order to meet the nearly insatiable demand for new applications, better performance and higher reliability, trustworthiness, security, and power consumption efficiency, engineers must deliver smart innovations, i.e., must develop the best techniques, technologies and services in a way that respects human beings and the environment. With that goal in mind, the key topics addressed in this book are: smart technologies and artificial intelligence, green energy systems, aerospace engineering/robotics and IT, information security and mobile engineering, IT in bio-medical engineering and smart agronomy, smart marketing, management and tourism policy, technology and education, and hydrogen and fuel-cell energy technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing complexity of manufacturing systems as well as the overall demands for flexible and fault-tolerant control of production processes stimulates (among many others) two key emerging technologies that are already making an important breakthrough in the field of intelligent manufacturing, control, and diagnostics. These two paradigms are: • the holonic approach based on the event-driven control strategy, usually aimed at modular control systems that are directly physically linked with the manufacturing hardware equipment, and • the multi-agent approach developed in the area of distributed information processing. The research communities working in both these fields are approaching the problem of intelligent manufacturing from different viewpoints and, until recently, to a certain extent, in an independent way. We can however observe quite a clear convergence of these fields in the last few years: the communities have started to cooperate, joining efforts to solve the painful problems involved in achieving effective industrial practice. We can see convergence in the terminology, standards and methods being applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only about 10-30 percent of the planned strategies are ultimately realized. However, the recipes for success often seem quite simple. If this is the case, the question inevitably arises as to why our success rate is often so low? Moreover, the average lifespan of an organization is shorter than a human life. What can organizations do to perform better and how can we ensure our survival and develop the ability to transform and adapt, especially in the age of digitalization and Industry 4.0? However, top management spends less than three percent of their time shaping the long-term future. Even if this figure is questionable, it is an indicator that there is enormous potential to create our future much better. It is our challenge as managers or entrepreneurs/intrapreneurs to think without limits and to prepare and shape the future. Any straitjacket in thinking, especially in innovation, must be eliminated. It is time to familiarize you with the concept of the Strategic Control Loop and the TUDAPOL principle: unlimited thinking, agile development, lean production and operation. This principle should enable you to meet the management challenges in the age of globalization, increasing complexity and digital transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-volume high-variety products like personalized cars or customized engines will be the key issues for manufacturing in the 21st century. The necessary control technology is based on the concept of holons, which are the units of production and behave as autonomous and cooperative agents, providing flexibility, adaptability, agility, and dynamic reconfigurability. This book presents the latest research results in agent-based manufacturing as carried out by researchers in academia and industry within the international "Holonic Manufacturing Systems" project. As this project was driven by industry, the results presented here are of vital interest not just to researchers in agent technologies or distributed artificial intelligence, but also to engineers and professionals in industry who have to respond to rapid changes and new demands in production.

Book excerpt: New materials are constantly being developed which may improve or transform many aspects of our lives, and nowhere is this more exciting than in the fields of vehicle and machinery technology. This book presents the proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on New Materials, Machinery and Vehicle Engineering (NMMVE 2022), held as a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, from 18 - 20 March 2022. NMMVE 2022 provides an international forum for researchers and engineers to present and discuss recent advances, new techniques, and applications in the fields of new materials, machinery and vehicle engineering, and attracts academics, scientists, engineers, postgraduates, and other professionals from a wide range of universities and institutions. A total of 121 submissions were received, from which 48 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and proceeding after a rigorous, standard single-blind reviewing process. The papers are grouped into 3 sections: machinery (30 papers); new materials (11 papers); and vehicle engineering (7 papers). Providing an overview of the latest developments in these fields, the book will be of interest to all those wishing to know more about new materials and machine and vehicle engineering.

Book excerpt: This book addresses computer-supported collaborative learning (also known as CSCL) particularly within a tertiary education environment. It includes articles on theory and practice in this area including topics such as: how can groups with shared goals work collaboratively using the new technologies? What problems can be expected, and what are the benefits? In what ways does online group work differ from face-to-face group work? And what implications are there for both educators and students seeking to work in this area?
