Book excerpt: From the Preface: The following pages provide a narrative analysis of the U.S. Army's development of armored organizations and their related doctrine, materiel, and training activities in the period 1917-1945. This period marked the emergence of clear principles of armored warfare that became the underpinning of the Armor Branch, influencing armored developments long after World War II ended. A unique style of mounted maneuver combat emerged that reflected a mix of tradition an innovation. In the process, American military culture changed, particularly through the adoption of combined-arms principles. Conversely, political actions, budgetary considerations, and senior leadership decisions also shaped the course of armor development. The emergence of an American armored force involved more than simply tank development. It included the creation of an armored division structure steeped in combined-arms principles, organizational flexibility, and revolutionary command and control processes. Parallel developments included the establishment of specialized units to provide antitank, reconnaissance, and infantry support capabilities. Several Army branches played a role in determining the precise path of armored development, and one of them-the Cavalry-became a casualty as a result.

Book excerpt: Using the Abrams Tank Crewman One-Step Unit Training as a case study, this study identifies alternative approaches for individual training and analyzes their cost implications. It suggests that although the current course's content and length is consistent with job requirements in the initial duty assignment, more efficient training techniques can be used in resident instruction. The analysis shows that many armor-specific tasks currently taught using tanks can be taught using training aids, devices, simulators, and simulations (TADSS). In addition, the amount of computer-based training (CBT) can be increased in basic training. Expanded use of TADSS to replace training on vehicles can provide substantial savings in operating and support costs, but the level of costs and savings depends on how the devices and course changes are implemented. If new trainers and simulators must be developed and procured, savings will be cut. The study also found that savings differ across devices. Although substituting TADSS for tanks appears cost effective, the evidence for CBT is mixed.

Book excerpt: Combat history of the U.S. Army's oldest armored regiment Tank battles in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge The 66th Armored Regiment is still active today and has served in Iraq From its baptism of fire in the mud of the Western Front in 1918 to its triumphant march into Berlin in July 1945, this is the story of the U.S. 66th Armored Regiment. It was the only American heavy tank unit to see combat in World War I, and between the two wars, the regiment served as a laboratory for new ideas and equipment. After training under Gen. George S. Patton, the 66th distinguished itself in numerous battles during World War II, earning six battle streamers for the unit and a Medal of Honor for one of its officers.
