Book Synopsis The Determinacy of Long Games by : Itay Neeman
Download or read book The Determinacy of Long Games written by Itay Neeman and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the author develops and applies methods for proving, from large cardinals, the determinacy of definable games of countable length on natural numbers. The determinacy is ultimately derived from iteration strategies, connecting games on natural numbers with the specific iteration games that come up in the study of large cardinals. The games considered in this text range in strength, from games of fixed countable length, through games where the length is clocked by natural numbers, to games in which a run is complete when its length is uncountable in an inner model (or a pointclass) relative to the run. More can be done using the methods developed here, reaching determinacy for games of certain length. The book is largely self-contained. Only graduate level knowledge of modern techniques in large cardinals and basic forcing is assumed. Several exercises allow the reader to build on the results in the text, for example connecting them with universally Baire and homogeneously Suslin sets. - Important contribution to one of the main features of current set theory, as initiated and developed by Jensen, Woodin, Steel and others.
Book Synopsis A Complete Repertoire Based on 1 B3 and 1 B6 by : Christian Bauer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great books from the Everyman Chess Library, play 1...b6! a dynamic and hypermodern opening system for Black by Christian Bauer and Nimzo Larsen Attack by Byron Jacobs and Jonathan Tait, brought together in one volume. Fed up with getting difficult positions with the black pieces? Tired of always having to keep up with all the latest developments. Take a break from the mountains of opening theory and play 1...b6! With the move, preparing a bishop fianchetto, Black immediately directs the game into relatively uncharted territory, one where White players are not able to sit back and rely on their 'opening book' knowledge. The real beauty of 1...b6 is that it can be played against virtually every single first move by White, so it is a perfect choice for Black players with neither the time nor inclination to memorise a multitude of different defences. Despite being relatively unexplored, 1...b6 has been the weapon of some dynamic and uncompromising world-class players, including Britain's first Grandmaster, the late Tony Miles. In this revolutionary book, Christian Bauer reveals for the first time the secrets of how to play 1...b6 with success. He takes an in-depth look at both the main lines and White's more offbeat tries, creating a comprehensive repertoire for the Black player and highlighting the tactical and positional ideas for both players. In Nimzo-Larsen Attack, Byron Jacobs and Jonathan Tait explain how you can use this dynamic opening to attack your opponent from move one. The Nimzo-Larsen Attack has been unfairly neglected in recent times, and this book aims to redress the balance.

Book Synopsis On the Origin of Good Moves by : Willy Hendriks
Download or read book On the Origin of Good Moves written by Willy Hendriks and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way a beginner develops into a strong chess player closely resembles the progress of the game of chess itself. This popular idea is the reason why many renowned chess instructors such as former World Champions Garry Kasparov and Max Euwe, emphasize the importance of studying the history of chess. Willy Hendriks agrees that there is much to be learned from the pioneers of our game. He challenges, however, the conventional view on what the stages in the advancement of chess actually have been. Among the various articles of faith that Hendriks questions is Wilhelm Steinitz's reputation as the discoverer of the laws of positional chess. In The Origin of Good Moves Hendriks undertakes a groundbreaking investigative journey into the history of chess. He explains what actually happened, creates fresh perspectives, finds new heroes, and reveals the real driving force behind improvement in chess: evolution. This thought-provoking book is full of beautiful and instructive ‘new’ material from the old days. With plenty of exercises, the reader is invited to put themselves in the shoes of the old masters. Never before has the study of the history of chess been so entertaining and rewarding.
