Book excerpt: This two-volume set contains 165 papers presented at a conference that brought together over 1,100 telecommunications leaders and leading commentators from over 40 countries across the Pacific region. The papers indicate that the optimism of the telecommunications industry is possibly greater than during the 1980s, although tempered by a more comprehensive view of how telecommunications development must benefit society; that distance education, health care, and other social applications of new technologies are vitally important; and that the importance of telecommunications to infrastructure development in developing countries is now recognized as crucial. Topics include planning and implementing services, techno-applications, economics of telecommunications development, distance education, wireless technologies, regional satellite systems, broadband technology, mobile services, satellite services, restructuring telecommunications organizations, health care enhancement through telecommunication, enterprise networks, digital audio radio, international strategies, user perspectives, business strategies, network management, culture and communication, markets for services, future trends and projections, converging technologies that impact regulatory structures, fiber optic submarine systems, social impacts of telecommunication changes, technology transfer, regulatory concerns, and social impact studies. A comprehensive table of contents and indexes of topics and authors are included. Many of the papers include references. (SLD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years there has been a shortage of flight opportunities for biological and medical projects. And those that were available usually had severe restrictions on instrumentation, number of subjects, duration, time allotted for performing the experiments, a possibility for repetition of experiments. It is our hope and expectation that this will change once the international Space Station is in full operation. The advantages of a permanent space station, already demonstrated by the Russian Mir station, are continuous availability of expert crew and a wide range of equipment, possibility of long-term experiments where this is waranted, increased numbers of subjects through larger laboratory space, proper controls in the large 1-G centrifuge, easier repeatability of experiments when needed. The limited number of flight opportunities during recent years probably explains why it has taken so long to acquire a sufficient number of high quality contributions for this seventh volume of Advances in Space Biology and Medicine. While initially the series wassailed at annually appearing volumes, we are now down to a biannual appearance. Hopefully, it will be possible to return to annual volumes in the future when results from space station experimentation at beginning to pour in. The first three chapters of this volume deal with muscle. Fejtek and Wassersug provide a survey of all studies on muscle of rodents flown in space, and include an interesting demography of this aspect of space research. Riley reviews our current knowledge of the effects of long-term spaceflight and re-entry on skeletal muscle, and considers the questions still to be answered before we can be satisfied that long-term space missions, such as on the space station, can be safely undertaken. Stein reviews our understanding of the nutritional and hormonal aspects of muscle loss in spaceflight, and concludes that the protein loss in space could be deleterious to health during flight and after return. Strollo summarizes our understanding of the major endocrine systems on the ground, then considers what we know about their functioning in space, concluding that there is much to be learned about the changes taking place during spaceflight. The many problems of providing life support (oxygen regeneration and food supply) during extended stay on the Moon, on Mars, or in space by means of plant cultivation are discussed by Salisbury. The challenges of utilizing electrophoresis in microgravity for the separation of cells and proteins are illustrated and explained by Bauer and colleagues. Finally, the chapter on teaching of space life sciences by Schmitt shows that this field of science has come of age, but also that its multidisciplinary character poses interesting challenges to teaching it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PTC'88 marks a decade of annual information exchanges among telecommunication professionals. The past ten conference volumes represent a substantial contribution towards providing a forum for discussion and interchange of information, ideas and expressions of views regarding telecommunications in the Pacific. The years have presented many changes and challenges; a chronology of the annual conference themes and papers testify to the growth and breadth of telecommunication in the Pacific hemisphere. The occasion of the tenth anniversary conference provided an opportunity to look back at what PTC has accomplished. Over the past decade more than 750 papers have been generated by hundreds of telecommunication professionals. The knowledge represents a significant foundation for the future. PTC'88 was organized around a model involving the telecommunication user, the provider and the marketplace (influenced by government regulation and open competition). More than 85 papers are contained in this volume, with contributions from more than 20 countries. Seventeen sessions of five-to-six papers each, present a wide range of Pacific telecommunication concerns. In some cases background papers are provided for special sessions and working groups. The volume will be of considerable interest to those involved in the academic, business and government aspects of telecommunications.

Book excerpt: The eighth Annual Pacific Telecommunications Conference (PTC) proceedings contain 61 papers related to the conference theme, "Evolution of the Digital Pacific." These papers look at the ramifications of future technological breakthroughs and transitional needs. The first two days of the conference focused on state-of-the-art developments and set the stage for the final day, which addressed training and human resource requirements. The proceedings parallel the chronological flow of the conference. The initial selection provides the context for PTC '86 as set out by the four keynote speakers--Richard K. Jacobsen, Richard Sedgewick, Park Hyon-Tae, and Toru Uehara. Focusing on current telecommunications developments, the first day speakers discussed network applications, business strategies, and regulatory frameworks. The second day's speakers considered future developments and the latest services and applications were presented in plenary and concurrent sessions. On the final day, authors concentrated on assessing and managing the transition into a digital Pacific. Training programs and organizations were examined both from a "needs" and "operational" point of view. (THC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic advancement of cellphone technology has fundamentally changed our daily lives. Smartphones and their applications have created new capital for information and communication technology corporations and changed the way people communicate. Because of an interesting awareness of the significance for digital economy and people’s daily culture, many countries, from the U.S. to China, have massively invested in the smartphone industries since the early 21st century. Among them, South Korea has become one of the centers for technology development and digital culture, although the country was once lagging behind in the penetration of the phones and their apps. Yet within the last few years, the country has taken a big step toward their goal of becoming a ‘mobile game wonderland’ by appropriating smartphones and it now exists as a curious test-bed for the future of smartphone technology. Smartland Korea, as the first attempt to comprehensively analyze mobile communication in the context of Korean smartphones, looks into a largely neglected focus of inquiry, a localized mobile landscape, with particular reference to young Koreans’ engagement with their devices and applications. Dal Yong Jin focuses not only on the celebratory achievement of technological advancement, but also the significance of social milieu in the development of the smartphones. He situates the emergence of smartphones within the growth of mobile technologies and overall telecommunications industries embedded in Korea’s information and communication technologies. The book examines the technology’s innovation and the evolution, the digital economy through the lens of political economy, and the youth culture embedded in the Korean smartphone context.
