Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Algebraic and Logic Programming, held in Pisa, Italy, September 2-4, 1992. Like the two previous conferences in Germany in 1988 and France in 1990, the third conference aims at strengthening the connections betweenalgebraic techniques and logic programming. On the one hand, logic programming has been very successful during the last decades and more and more systems compete in enhancing its expressive power. On the other hand, concepts like functions, equality theory, and modularity are particularly well handled in an algebraic framework. Common foundations of both approaches have recently been developed, and this conference is a forum for people from both areas to exchange ideas, results, and experiences. The book covers the following topics: semantics ofalgebraic and logic programming; integration of functional and logic programming; term rewriting, narrowing, and resolution; constraintlogic programming and theorem proving; concurrent features in algebraic and logic programming languages; and implementation issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its conception nearly 20 years ago, logic programming has been developed to the point where it now plays an important role in areas such as database theory, artificial intelligence and software engineering. There are, however, still many outstanding research issues which need to be addressed, and the UK branch of the Association for Logic Programming was set up to provide a forum where the flourishing research community could discuss important issues which were often by- passed at the larger international conferences. This volume contains the invited papers, refereed papers and tutorials presented at the 4th ALPUK Conference, which aimed to broaden the frontiers of logic programming by encouraging interaction between it and other related disciplines. The papers cover a variety of technical areas, including concurrent logic languages and their semantics, applications of logic languages to other (non-classical) logical systems, modules, types and error-handling, and the distributed execution of Prolog programs. The wide scope of the papers refelects the breadth of interest in this important area of computer science. ALPUK 92 provides a comprehensive overview of current progress being made in logic programming research. It will be of interest to all workers in the field, especially researchers, postgraduate students, and research and development workers in industry.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraint Logic Programming (CLP), an area of extreme research interest in recent years, extends the semantics of Prolog in such a way that the combinatorial explosion, a characteristic of most problems in the field of Artificial Intelligence, can be tackled efficiently. By employing solvers dedicated to each domain instead of the unification algorithm, CLP drastically reduces the search space of the problem, which leads to increased efficiency in the execution of logic programs. CLP offers the possibility of solving complex combinatorial problems in an efficient way, and at the same time maintains the advantages offered by the declarativeness of logic programming. The aim of this book is to present parallel and constraint logic programming, offering a basic understanding of the two fields to the reader new to the area. The first part of the book gives an introduction to the fundamental aspects of conventional logic programming which is necessary for understanding the parts that follow. The second part includes an introduction to parallel logic programming, architectures and implementations proposed in the area. Finally, the third part presents the principles of constraint logic programming. The last two parts also include descriptions of the supporting facilities for the two paradigms in two popular systems; ECLIPSe and SICStus. These platforms have been selected mainly because they offer both parallel and constraint features. Annotated and explained examples are also included in the relevant parts, offering a valuable guide and a first practical experience to the reader. Finally, applications of the covered paradigms are presented. The authors felt that a book of this kind should provide some theoretical background necessary for the understanding of the covered logic programming paradigms, and a quick start for the reader interested in writing parallel and constraint logic programming programs. However it is outside the scope of this book to provide a deep theoretical background of the two areas. In that sense, this book is addressed to a public interested in obtaining a knowledge of the domain, without spending the time and effort to understand the extensive theoretical work done in the field – namely postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students in the area of logic programming. This book fills a gap in the current bibliography, since there is no comprehensive book of this level that covers the areas of conventional, parallel, and constraint logic programming. Parallel and Constraint Logic Programming: An Introduction to Logic, Parallelism and Constraints is appropriate for an advanced level course on Logic Programming or Constraints, and as a reference for practitioners and researchers in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop on the processing of declarative knowledge. The workshop was organized and hosted by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in cooperation with the Association for Logic Programming (ALP) and the Gesellschaft f}r Informatik (GI). Knowledge is often represented using definite clauses, rules, constraints, functions, conceptual graphs, and related formalisms. The workshop addressed such high-level representations and their efficient implementation required for declarative knowledge bases. Many of the papers treat representation methods, mainly concept languages, and many treat implementation methods, such as transformation techniques and WAM-like abstract machines. Several papers describe implemented knowledge-processing systems. The competition between procedural and declarative paradigms was discussed in a panel session, and position statements of the panelists are included in the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrent Constraint Programming introduces a new and rich class of programming languages based on the notion of computing with partial information, or constraints, that synthesize and extend work on concurrent logic programming and that offer a promising approach for treating thorny issues in the semantics of concurrent, nondeterministic programming languages. Saraswat develops an elegant and semantically tractable framework for computing with constraints, emphasizing their importance for communication and control in concurrent, programming languages. He describes the basic paradigm, illustrates its structure, discusses various augmentations, gives a simple implementation of a concrete language, and specifies its connections with other formalisms. In this framework, concurrently executing agents communicate by placing and checking constraints on shared variables in a common store. The major form of concurrency control in the system is through the operations of Atomic Tell -- an agent may instantaneously place constraints only if they are consistent with constraints that have already been placed -- and Blocking Ask -- an agent must block when it checks a constraint that is not yet known to hold. Other operations at a finer granularity of atomicity are also presented. Saraswat introduces and develops the concurrent constraint family of programming languages based on these ideas, shows how various constraint systems can naturally realize data structures common in computer science, and presents a formal operational semantics for many languages in the concurrent constraint family. In addition, he provides a concrete realization of the paradigm on a sequential machine by presenting a compiler for the concurrent constraint language Herbrand and demonstrates a number of constraint-based concurrent programming techniques that lead to novel presentations of algorithms for many concurrent programming problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of logic programming and databases. has gained in creasing interest in recent years. Several events have marked the rapid evolution of this field: the selection, by the Japanese Fifth Generation Project, of Prolog and of the relational data model as the basis for the development of new machine archi tectures; the focusing of research in database theory on logic queries and on recursive query processing; and the pragmatic, application-oriented development of expert database systems and of knowledge-base systems. As a result, an enormous amount of work has been produced in the recent literature, coupled with the spontaneous growth of several advanced projects in this area. The goal of this book is to present a systematic overview of a rapidly evolving discipline, which is presently not described with the same approach in other books. We intend to introduce stu dents and researchers to this new discipline; thus we use a plain, tutorial style, and complement the description of algorithms with examples and exercises. We attempt to achieve a balance be tween theoretical foundations and technological issues; thus we present a careful introduction to the new language Datalog, but we also focus on the efficient interfacing of logic programming formalisms (such as Prolog and Datalog) with large databases.
