Book Synopsis Native Americans in the School System by : Carol Jane Ward
Download or read book Native Americans in the School System written by Carol Jane Ward and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2005 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carol Ward examines persistent dropout rates among Native American youth, which remain high despite overall increases in Native adult education attainment in the last twenty years. Focusing on the experiences of the Northern Cheyenne nation, she evaluates historical, ethnographic, and quantitative data to determine the causes of these educational failures, and places this data in an economic, political, and cultural context. She shows that the rate of failure in this community is the result of conflicting approaches to socializing youth, the struggle between 'native capital' and 'human capital' development systems. With high rates of unemployment, poverty, and school dropouts, the Northern Cheyenne reservation provides some important lessons as Native Americans pursue greater educational success. This volume will be of use to policy makers, instructors of comparative education, Native American studies, sociology and anthropology.
Book Synopsis Inventing the Savage by : Luana Ross
Download or read book Inventing the Savage written by Luana Ross and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Her book offers many insights into the criminality of Native people, as well as that of women or anyone else who is poor and oppressed.” —Canadian Woman Studies Luana Ross writes, “Native Americans disappear into Euro-American institutions of confinement at alarming rates. People from my reservation appeared to simply vanish and magically return. [As a child] I did not realize what a ‘real’ prison was and did not give it any thought. I imagined this as normal; that all families had relatives who went away and then returned.” In this pathfinding study, Ross draws upon the life histories of imprisoned Native American women to demonstrate how race/ethnicity, gender, and class contribute to the criminalizing of various behaviors and subsequent incarceration rates. Drawing on the Native women’s own words, she reveals the violence in their lives prior to incarceration, their respective responses to it, and how those responses affect their eventual criminalization and imprisonment. Comparisons with the experiences of white women in the same prison underline the significant role of race in determining women’s experiences within the criminal justice system. “Professor Ross, through painstaking phenomenological analysis, has unmasked some of the ways in which (race, class, and gender) prejudices, and their internalization by individuals targeted by them, exert enormous influence on the processes and outcomes of the American criminal justice system . . . This book will be of tremendous import to a broad, interdisciplinary audience.” —Franke Wilmer, Associate Professor of Political Science, Montana State University

Book Synopsis The Effects of SO2 on a Grassland by : William Williams
Download or read book The Effects of SO2 on a Grassland written by William Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Springer-Verlag undertook publication of this volume, two opportunities arose. The first was to bring together the significant findings ofthe interacting parts of a large field experiment on a whole ecosystem. Scientific specialists and the public are rightly concerned with large-scale impacts of human activity on landscapes and with the challenge of predicting subtle, long-range repercussions of air pollution. A fundamental issue is whether ecological systems like grasslands, which have evolved for several million years under stressful conditions such as variable climate and overgrazing, are more robust than other systems in tolerating new atmospheric impacts of pollution and toxicity. At what level, and when, will an extra geochemical input, like sulfur (Chapter 4), an essential nutrient for proteins and life processes, become an overload on these systems? Some grasses and grassland ecosystems seem fairly adaptable to burdens in addition to those of weather change and tissue removal. How can experts learn to project the future of the heartland of America and other grasslands of the world on the basis of only a few years of observation and control? The second opportunity addresses a broader aspect of the project that is of interest to many readers who are not concerned with details of physiology or food chains, or the overall productivity and variations of a single plant-animal-soil community.
