Book excerpt: This report details the most recent developments to ARAP's program for computing the detailed low-level atmospheric distribution of velocity, temperature, moisture, refractive index, and the turbulent variances of these quantities. Model modifications discussed include the incorporation of an anisotropic length scale and the investigation into the continuation of a simpler integral model. Model calculations show the improved predictions of horizontal turbulent variances made possible by the anisotropic scale formulation, and provide for comparisons with the results of NEPRF's model calculations.

Book excerpt: Two major modifications to A.R.A.P.'s program for computing the detailed low-level atmospheric distributions of velocity, temperature, moisture, refractive index, and the turbulent variances of these quantities for marine environments are described. The dimensions of the program have been extended to a two-dimensional, unsteady calculation to permit prediction of shoreline conditions developing in time. Also, a thermal radiation model has been incorporated into the one-dimensional model to permit the radiative flux divergence term to be computed in a fully coupled manner. Sample calculations have been made both to verify that the program behaves in a reasonably physical manner and to exemplify some of the types of boundary layer distributions which may be expected to occur. The coupled thermal radiation model was used to make calculations of the typical diurnal variations in the boundary layer over both land and water. The time variation of the boundary layer's stability is quite different over water than it is over land. This leads to sea-breeze circulations in the coastal planetary boundary layer which are exemplified in calculations using the two-dimensional, unsteady version of the model.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details the last year's developments to A.R.A.P. 's program for computing the detailed low-level atmospheric distributions of velocity, temperature, moisture, refractive index, and the turbulent variances of these quantities for marine environments. Effort has been divided between extending the model and in exercising the existing model to both exemplify expected phenomena and to compare with available observations. The model has been extended: to remove the hydrostatic approximation; to incorporate condensation and radiation into the two-dimensional, unsteady model; to incorporate terrain variation into the surface boundary conditions; and to determine the influence of particle size on the turbulent transport of aerosols. Sample calculations include fog episodes, diurnal variation of stratus over the ocean, the general structure of the tradewind boundary layer, and an evaporatively cooled gust front. Although verification tests have not been adequate to provide a detailed assessment of accuracy, the model results are generally quite consistent with available observations. (Author).

Book Synopsis Atmospheric Water Vapor by : Adarsh Deepak

Book excerpt: Atmospheric Water Vapor contains the technical proceedings of the International Workshop on Atmospheric Water Vapor held in Vail, Colorado, on September 11-13, 1979. The papers assess the state-of-the-art in measurement, modeling, and application of atmospheric water vapor properties and highlight important problems that require further effort in order to better understand the atmosphere itself as well as the electromagnetic propagation through the atmosphere. Comprised of 39 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the optics and spectroscopy of water vapor. Some actual spectra showing the problems specific to the water molecule are described, along with the method used to calculate precise vibration-rotation energy levels and wave functions. Atmospheric infrared transmission measurements in maritime locations are also presented. Subsequent sections explore microwave and millimeter wave phenomena; geoastrophysical applications; and in situ measurements, remote sensing, and meteorology of water vapor. The final chapters deal with the microphysics and atmospheric chemistry of water vapor. This monograph will be of interest to scientists from universities, government agencies, research laboratories, and industry.

Book excerpt: During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MASEX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results for the past year's developments for computing the detailed low-level atmospheric distribution of velocity, temperature, moisture, refractive index, and the turbulent variances of these quantities. A critical review of the present status of the model is presented along with results of new calculations. A calculation of fog evolution is presented to show a cold-water fog evolving into a warm-water fog as a result of radiational cooling. The evolution of breaking Kelvin-Helmholtz waves is also followed in a series of calculations which should lead to a better understanding of the dynamics of the inversion layer at the top of the atmospheric boundary layer. Detailed derivations of two proposed extensions to the model are presented. One involves a hybrid integral-differential description to permit approximate solutions to be obtained with less numerical effort, and the second involves the incorporation of precipitation into the two-phase representation of water in the atmospheric.
