Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the artistic development of renowned potter Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011), this masterful study celebrates and analyzes an artist who held a significant place in the post-World War II craft movement in America. Born in Hawaii of Japanese descent in 1922, Takaezu worked actively in clay, fiber, and bronze for over sixty years. Influenced by midcentury modernism, her work transformed from functional vessels to abstract sculptural forms and installations. Over the years, continued to draw on a combination of Eastern and Western techniques and aesthetics, as well as her love of the natural world. In particular, Takaezu's vertical closed forms became a symbol of her work, created through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques that allowed her to grow her vessels vertically and eased the circular restrictions of the wheel. In addition to her art, Takaezu was renowned for her teaching, including twenty years at Princeton University. This beautifully illustrated book offers the first scholarly analysis of Takaezu's life work and includes essays by Paul Smith, director emeritus of the American Craft Museum, and Janet Koplos, former senior editor of Art in America. Jack Lenor Larsen, a textile designer, author, collector, and advocate of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship, provides a foreword.

Book excerpt: Inuit--sometimes referred to as Eskimo--art is the primary art form of Canada and has a large international following, particularly in the United States, Japan, and Germany. Despite its popularity, the complete history of Inuit art has never been presented. This is the first chronological synthesis of Inuit art, following its development from prehistory, through early American and European exploration, to the recognition of Inuit art as a commercial possibility, and up to the present. There is a particular emphasis on contemporary art and artists, and the years 1950 through 1997 are each given separate, detailed treatment in regard to important shows and events. This history is appropriate both for the beginning admirer of Inuit art and for those already well immersed in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disclosure: This description was prompted and edited by Bill Ritchie, in Microsoft’s current Copilot, an AI text generator for the second volume of Bill H. Ritchie's two-part autobiography. We traverse the years from 1991 to 2023. Ritchie, a trailblazer in the art world continues his life story. In the first book he told how he embarked on a remarkable odyssey that defied convention and reshaped the art, craft, and design of fine art printmaking. At the tender age of 24, Ritchie secured a groundbreaking position—the youngest ever—in the vibrant city of Seattle. His appointment as a teaching artist in fine art printmaking at the University of Washington marked the beginning of a transformative chapter. But this was no ordinary academic journey; Ritchie's innovative spirit would soon set him apart, a maverick in academe. The traditional classroom was too confining for Ritchie. Driven by a hunger for exploration, he wove technology into his art courses in the 1980s. Bill Ritchie's experiments disrupted the staid printmaking department and shocked the UW School of Art. Forced to leave the stifling ivory towers, by the 1990s the emergence of electronic arts opened with the Internet and would extend the boundaries of printmaking. Ritchie's vision blurred the lines between historic creativity and cutting-edge technology, birthing a new era dating back to the Paleolithic era when printmaking was invented. Ritchie pushed the envelope. Printmaking was no longer confined to ink and paper; it now danced with video, performance, computer graphics, and games. His colleagues, patrons, and former students watched in awe, wondering at the audacity of his moves. Telling all, Ritchie weaves rich, detailed tales. In his printed books he placed thousands of pictures to enliven the narrative, capturing moments shared with those who left their marks on his journey. QR codes link videos and backstories, bridging epochs—from prehistoric cave paintings to the digital age. The echoes of ancient handprints resonate, showing that explication transcends time if replicated creatively. In a world illuminated and echoed by electronic media, Ritchie poses a poignant question: "Is there hope?" As climate change and global stressors threaten the future, his words resonate. Whether through brushstrokes or those fleeting, elusive pixels and here in eBook form and auxiliary Read Aloud option, Ritchie's legacy endures—a beacon for students of all ages, urging them to embrace creativity, defy boundaries, and find hope in the interplay of art, technology, and the human imagination.

Book excerpt: A riveting survey of almost three hundred posters, revealing a history of Bay Area artists, activists, and movements from the 1960s to 2012. This catalog of political posters pays homage to an influential and populist art movement that has created some of the most enduring imagery of our time. In All of Us or None, author Lincoln Cushing examines key selections from a remarkable archive of over 24,000 posters amassed by free speech movement activist, author, and educator Michael Rossman over the course of thirty years. This inspiring collection of Bay Area posters illuminates the history of this ad-hoc and ephemeral art form, celebrating its unique capacity to infuse contemporary issues with the urgency and energy of the eternal fight for justice. Featuring posters on topics as diverse as civil rights, war, poverty, the environment, music, women’s liberation, fine art, and gentrification, All of Us or None shows us why the Bay Area was such fertile breeding ground for the genre and why it arguably produced more independent political posters than anywhere else on earth. Here is an exhilarating history of artists, studios, printshops, distributors, activists, icons, and changemakers—among them R. Crumb, Stanley Mouse, Cesar Chavez, Max Scherr, Emory Douglas, Angela Davis, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, Bill Graham, and Pete Seeger—together raising their voices in opposition to the status quo. In spring of 2012, the Oakland Museum of California presented its first comprehensive exhibition of this recently acquired treasure; the show, along with this book, presented an unbroken narrative of passionate social justice printmaking from the mid-1960s to 2012. “This engaging catalogue surveys nearly 300 of the late Michael Rossman’s enormous collection of over 24,000 San Francisco Bay Area social justice posters . . . . With fluid, highly accessible prose, Cushing traces the lineage of images that have now become iconic, such as Frank Cieciorka’s often quoted clenched fist, or the Black Panther Party’s panther symbol as rendered by Emory Douglas and others.” —Publishers Weekly “An extremely remarkable and useful book: remarkable because it brings back so many of the memorable images of rebellion political, cultural, and both together from a past now rapidly receding, and useful because in our new era of protest, creative expression in artistic forms is more badly needed than ever. Lincoln Cushing, a distinguished scholar of political art, has given us a small masterpiece.” —Paul Buhle, publisher of the SDS magazine Radical America and author of more than forty books on radical politics and culture
