Download or read book Doomsday Delayed written by John H. Rubel and published by Hamilton Books. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the Soviet launching of Sputnik I, John H. Rubel became one of six Assistant Directors of Research and Engineering for the Department of Defense in the recently re-organized Pentagon. It was here that Rubel would witness two of the most significant events of his career. In Doomsday Delayed, Rubel recounts the initial disclosure to selected civilian defense officials of launch arrangements designed into the Minuteman missile system and the Single Integrated Operational Plan (SIOP-62), both deliberately designed to kill and maim innocent civilians in the USSR and China. These launch system designs invited the possibility of an unauthorized or accidental mass launch of tens or even hundreds of nuclear-tipped missiles with little or no warning, effectively removing operational control from the President, military commander, or civilian defense official in the event of nuclear confrontation. Rubel's account illustrates how potentially disastrous gaps came to exist between national military policies and the detailed design and development of major intercontinental ballistic missile systems-important lessons to be learned in this time of rogue nations and nuclear proliferation.

Download or read book Murongiwa Stanislaus Marembo written by TAVA MAREMBO and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is chiefly a narrative by one of the founding politicians of Zimbabwe, Murongiwa Stanislaus Marembo, about his life in the then-oppressive Rhodesia. The man who spent arguably the longest, a total of seventeen years, in detention tells of his trials, tribulations, and the persecution he suffered for the independence of Zimbabwe. Mr. Marembo was one of the first people to be arrested and detained for political reasons. He was incarcerated in many a prison and detention and restriction area across what was then Southern Rhodesia and was left at the mercy of the wild. Marembo was instrumental in the transformation of Zimbabwe from the hands of the minority to the majority, but he did not live to enjoy the fruits of his labor. The real enemy pounced and assassinated him on 6 February 1981 by a bomb.

Book excerpt: The Communist Economic Challenge (1965) examines the substantial industrial development in the Soviet Union, and its European satellites, and China, looking at Khrushchev’s boast that by 1970 the USSR’s industrial output would surpass that of the USA. The book analyses the communist record, and evaluates the reality of the Soviet claims that its growth was a mark of the ‘inherent superiority’ of its economic system over capitalism.
