Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessible, trustworthy documentation is key to successful genealogy research and Hazel Boss Neet provides just such data in this publication. Extracted from data collected and certified as true and complete by W. W. Lamar, the local tax assessor, this valuable resource contains the names of all educable children in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, in 1892. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the child's parent (or guardian) and include the following categories: range, township, sex, age, and color. The author also provides a helpful index for referencing children whose last names are different from the parent or guardian. Located in northeast Mississippi, Pontotoc County is part of the last territory in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee that was ceded by the Chickasaw Indians in the 1832 Treaty of Pontotoc. Anyone searching for ancestors in these locales may find strong evidence of them among the thousands of names included in this text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating history set in the Reconstruction South is a testament to African-American resilience, fortitude, and independence. It tells of three attempts to create an ideal community on the river bottom lands at Davis Bend south of Vicksburg. There Joseph Davis's effort to establish a cooperative community among the slaves on his plantation was doomed to fail as long as they remained in bondage. During the Civil War the Yankees tried with limited success to organize the freedmen into a model community without trusting them to manage their own affairs. After the war the intrepid Benjamin Montgomery and his family bought the land from Davis and established a very prosperous colony of their fellow freedmen. Their success at Davis Bend occurred when blacks were accorded the opportunity to pursue the American dream relatively free from the discrimination that prevailed in most of society. It is a story worthy of celebration. Janet Hermann writes here of two men--Joseph Davis, the slaveholder and brother of the president of the Confederacy, and Benjamin Montgomery, an educated freedman. In 1866 Montgomery began the experiment at Davis Bend. The Pursuit of a Dream, published in 1981, received the Robert F. Kennedy Award, the McLemore Prize of the Mississippi Historical Society, and the Silver Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California. Historical writing at its best . . . her research is impressive and is presented in balanced, ironic prose. --David Bradley, New York Times Book Review. A marvelous story for all readers with a taste for the ironies, the ambiguities, and the surprises of history. --C. Vann Woodward. Janet Sharp Hermann, a freelance writer and historian, is the author of Joseph E. Davis: Pioneer Patriarch (University Press of Mississippi).

Book excerpt: Entering on the career of "Hanging Judge" Isaac C. Parker, this book is "a startling reminder of what really went on in the Old West." - "The New Yorker." For twenty-one years, from 1875 to 1896, Isaac C. Parker, Judge of the U.S. Court of the Western District of Arkansas, was the law west of Fort Smith, holding exclusive jurisdiction over 74,000 square miles and 60,000 people in Arkansas and Indian Territory. In this colorful yet carefully researched account of the "Hanging Judge, " Glenn Shirley also traces the careers of such famous criminals as the Daltons, Belle Starr, the Buck gang, and Cole Younger; records the processes of the court; and tells how the district's 200 deputy marshals worked against overwhelming odds to bring justice and order. The appendix includes a chronology of the 79 hangings ordered by Parker; a list of commutations and pardons, reversals and acquittals, and bonds fortefied; and two of the Judge's famous charges to the jury, in themselves notable documents of legal history. Glenn Shirley, who has written widely on western law and outlaws, is also the author of "Pawnee Bill: A Biography of Major Gordon W. Lillie" and the editor of "Buckskin Joe: The Memoirs of Edward Jonathan Hoyt." "This is far the best and most readable book on Judge Parker and his hanging court." - Stanley Vestal, "Daily Oklahoman." "A startling reminder of what really went on in the Old West before the dime novel and Hollywood turned it into a kind of primrose path." - "New Yorker." "This book is top-quality and exciting history engagingly told." - "New York Times Book Review."
