Book excerpt: After an illuminating account of the history of Patrick and Henry counties, which occupies the first third of the book, the authors turn their attention to genealogy, providing authoritative histories of no fewer than 110 families. The genealogies generally begin with the first settler in either Patrick or Henry County and proceed to enumerate descendants in several generations, providing incidental detail according to the materials available. In addition to the remarkable collection of genealogies, the book also contains transcriptions of important genealogical source materials, such as the Patrick and Henry land grants and patents registered in the old Land Office in Richmond.

Book excerpt: Grayson County is famous in southwestern Virginia as the cradle of the New River settlements--perhaps the first settlements beyond the Alleghanies. The Nuckolls book is equally famous for its genealogies of the pioneer settlers of the county, which, typically, provide the names of the progenitors of the Grayson County line and their dates and places of migration and settlement, and then, in fluid progression, the names of all offspring in the direct and sometimes collateral lines of descent. Altogether somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 persons are named in the genealogies and indexed for ready reference.

Book excerpt: This volume concentrates on Henry Bishop Sr., and his wife Francis "Fanny" Simpkins Bishop, and their many descendants. Henry was the son of Hans Johannes Bischoff and Margaretha Overmeyer, and settled in the Floyd County Virginia area as a child with his parents. His family remained there, and many of his descendants are in that area to this day. The major sources for this volume have been Mrs. Joyce Buckert, of Illinois, she published the first and most well know volume about Henry and his descendants, and much of the information contained in this volume utilizes her information (with her permission) as well as quite a few updates that Ms. Buckert has been so kind as to provide. Of course, anyone researching the Descendants of Henry Bishop and Fanny Simpkins should absolutely refer to Ms. Buckert's original publication as well as utilizing this volume to supplement the research for any additional, later added, information.

For the genealogist there is the important and wholly fortuitous list of tithables of Pittsylvania County for the year 1767, which enumerates the names of nearly 1,000 landowners and property holders, amounting in sum to a rough census of the county in its infancy. Additional lists include the names, some with inclusive dates of service, of sheriffs, justices of the peace, members of the House of Delegates, 1776-1928, members of the Senate of Virginia, 1776-1928, clerks of the court, and judges.

Book excerpt: Bath has a small number of people, and a considerable share of this small number is a new element. To many individuals of the latter class a history of the county will appeal very little. For the above reasons we confine ourselves to a presentation of the more striking and important features in the story of this county. But if, in a commercial sense, this county seemed only a moderately promising field for a local history, it remains very true that Bath is one of the best known counties of the Old Dominion. It is one of the older counties in the Alleghany belt, and it lies on a natural highway of travel and commerce. The story of its evolution is one of much interest. -- Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 57th Virginia Infantry was one of five regiments in General Lewis Armistead's Brigade in Pickett's Charge, at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Prior to being Brigadier General, Armistead commanded the 57th Virginia. About 1,800 men joined the 57th, primarily from Franklin, Pittsylvania, Buckingham, Botetourt, and Albemarle County, but at least 15 bordering counties contributed men. Initial enlistments were from May-July of 1861, with the nucleus coming from 5 companies of Keen's Battalion. This publication gives detail on the battles, from Malvern Hill to Appomattox, and the prison camps many suffered through. The core of the book, however, is a quest for basic genealogical data on the men of the 57th Virginia, with a focus on their parents, wives, and location in 1860.
