Book Synopsis Vienna and Versailles by : Jeroen Frans Jozef Duindam
Download or read book Vienna and Versailles written by Jeroen Frans Jozef Duindam and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-14 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings vividly to life the courtiers and servants of the imperial court in Vienna and the royal court at Paris-Versailles. Drawing on a wealth of material masterfully set in a comparative context, the book makes a unique contribution to the field of court studies. Staff, numbers, costs and hierarchies; daily routines and ceremonies; court favourites and the nature of rulership; the integrative and centripetal forces of the central courtly establishment: all are seen in a long-term, comparative perspective that highlights both the similarities and the distinctiveness of developments in France and the Habsburg lands. In the process, most conventional views of each court - and of court life in general - are challenged, and an alternative interpretation emerges. Finally, by relocating the household in the heart of the early modern state, Vienna and Versailles forces us to rethink the process of statebuilding and the notion of 'absolutism'.

Book Synopsis Where North Meets South by : Lawrence A. Herzog
Download or read book Where North Meets South written by Lawrence A. Herzog and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book embraces an emerging paradox of human geography: the growth of cities along international boundaries. For many years the world system was ordered in such a way that international boundaries remained essentially free of human settlement. In the last three decades, however, the axioms of traditional geopolitical organization have been shattered; in a number of areas in the world, including the United States-Mexico, United States-Canada, and western European border regions, boundaries have come to house large-scale cities. -- From Preface (page xi).
Book Synopsis The Möbius Strip by : Jonathan D. Amith
Download or read book The Möbius Strip written by Jonathan D. Amith and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Möbius Strip explores the history, political economy, and culture of space in central Guerrero, Mexico, during the colonial period. This study is significant for two reasons. First, space comprises a sphere of contention that affects all levels of society, from the individual and his or her household to the nation-state and its mechanisms for control and coercion. Second, colonialism offers a particularly unique situation, for it invariably involves a determined effort on the part of an invading society to redefine politico-administrative units, to redirect the flow of commodities and cash, and, ultimately, to foster and construct new patterns of allegiance and identity to communities, regions, and country. Thus spatial politics comprehends the complex interaction of institutional domination and individual agency. The complexity of the diachronic transformation of space in central Guerrero is illustrated through an analysis of land tenure, migration, and commercial exchange, three salient and contested aspects of hispanic conquest. The Möbius Strip, therefore, addresses issues important to social theory and to the understanding of the processes affecting the colonialization of non-Western societies.
