This book was released on 2001 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of A. W. N. Pugin (1812-52) in the history of the Gothic Revival, in the development of ecclesiology, in the origins of the Arts and Crafts movement, and in architectural theory is incontestable. A leading British architect who was also a designer of furniture, silver, textiles, stained glass, and jewellery, he is one of the most significant figures of the mid-nineteenth century and one of the greatest designers. His correspondence is important because it provides more insight into the man and more information about his work than any other source. It cuts a cross-section through early Victorian society: his correspondents range from earls and bishops to painters and tradesmen. The letters illuminate majorpublic events like the Oxford Movement, the (Roman) Catholic revival, and the Great Exhibition of 1851. They are vigorous, direct, often witty and provide an invaluable source for architectural and religio-historical research. Dr Belcher's very thorough research generally transforms what has oftenbeen a blank area, drawing together many sources. By 1842, when this volume ends, Pugin is established in his career. He has written books, designed buildings, found his faith, and made himself known.

Book Synopsis Remember the Distance that Divides Us by : Elizabeth Margaret Chandler
Download or read book Remember the Distance that Divides Us written by Elizabeth Margaret Chandler and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Delaware's Brandywine Valley in 1807, Elizabeth Margaret Chandler was a young woman who was fully engaged in her time. Leaving comfort and middle-class Philadelphia wealth behind, she headed west in 1830 with brother, Thomas, and an aunt to begin a new life in the wilderness of the Michigan Territory. During the next four years, until her untimely death in November 1834, Chandler became a tireless local activist; at the same time, she participated aggressively in national political discussions about pressing social issues, in particular in the dialogue about the nascent women's movement and in the debates about Abolitionism as they began to develop in the 1820s and early 1830s. She was ladies' editor of Benjamin Lundy's Abolitionist Journal and a contemporary of William Lloyd Garrison. She wrote letters, articles, and poetry that appeared in the Abolitionist press, but at the same time she was a champion for public education at the local level. Within two years of her arrival in Michigan, she had established the territory's first anti-slave organization, the Logan Female Antislavery Society. This rich collection of personal letters, most written to family members during Chandler's brief life in Michigan, provides a remarkable view of the Northwest frontier in the 1830s, as well as profound insights into the ideology and origins of Abolitionism. Her letters also reveal much about the beliefs, attitudes, and actions of a remarkable young woman who some have seen as a precursor to the Grimké sisters.

Download or read book Kongo: Power and Majesty written by Alisa LaGamma and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating account of the effects of turbulent history on one of Africa’s most storied kingdoms, Kongo: Power and Majesty presents over 170 works of art from the Kingdom of Kongo (an area that includes present-day Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola). The book covers 400 years of Kongolese culture, from the fifteenth century, when Portuguese, Dutch, and Italian merchants and missionaries brought Christianity to the region, to the nineteenth, when engagement with Europe had turned to colonial incursion and the kingdom dissolved under the pressures of displacement, civil war, and the devastation of the slave trade. The works of art—which range from depictions of European iconography rendered in powerful, indigenous forms to fearsome minkondi, or power figures—serve as an assertion of enduring majesty in the face of upheaval, and richly illustrate the book’s powerful thesis.
