Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least five different Weems men settled on Long Cane Creek in Abbeville County, South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Even today there are Weems living in Abbeville County, both white and black. For years, genealogists have been confused about who is the son of whom, but land records make it clear that '4' men; Thomas (Eleanor) Weems, Redfearn Weems, Thomas (and Elizabeth) Weems, and Henry Weems all were granted land on Long Cane Creek. While the county lines have changed dramatically over the years, Long Cane Creek remained a constant. It was here that thousands of Weems descendants, both black and white, call home. Today, DNA evidence is slowly dividing the different Weems children into family groups. Included here, are the descendants of each of those identified children; regardless of who their parent(s) was. There is most certainly missing information, errors in dates and places, and misspellings. Feel free to scribble on your book and make your corrections, and additions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a groundbreaking study of the day-to-day law and culture of slavery, Ariela Gross investigates the local courtrooms of the Deep South where ordinary people settled their disputes over slaves. Buyers sued sellers for breach of warranty when they considered slaves to be physically or morally defective; owners sued supervisors who whipped or neglected slaves under their care. Double Character seeks to explain how communities dealt with an important dilemma raised by these trials: how could slaves who acted as moral agents be treated as commodities? Because these cases made the character of slaves a central legal question, slaves' moral agency intruded into the courtroom, often challenging the character of slaveholders who saw themselves as honorable masters. Gross looks at the stories about white and black character that witnesses and litigants put forth in court. She not only reveals the role of law in constructing "race" but also offers a portrait of the culture of slavery, one that addresses historical debates about law, honor, and commerce in the American South. Gross maintains that witnesses and litigants drew on narratives available in the culture at large to explain the nature and origins of slaves' character, such as why slaves became runaways. But the legal process also shaped their expressions of racial ideology by favoring certain explanations over others. Double Character brings to life the law as a dramatic ritual in people's daily lives, looking at trials from the perspective of litigants, lawyers, doctors, and the slaves themselves. The author's approach combines the methods of cultural anthropology, quantitative social history, and critical race theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a trip here from Scotland, David Dobson searched the archives of North and South Carolina and found a mass of material proving the presence of a large number of Scots in the Carolinas before and after the Revolution. He located similar records in university libraries and historical societies, and he also found in the 1850 Federal Census more information on persons of Scottish origin. The result of this research appears here in Volume 1 of Directory of Scots in the Carolinas (see also Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830, Volume 2). In this work Mr. Dobson presents, for the first time, a comprehensive list of Scottish settlers in the Carolinas from 1680 to 1830. In general, the details provided include age, place and date of birth, and often names of parents, names of spouse and children, occupation, place of residence, and the date of emigration from Scotland. About 6,000 Scots are identified in this book, and a small number are listed in Dobson's Scottish Settlers series, but the majority--90% or so--are listed here for the first time.
