Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago, Horizons in Molecular Biology symposium was conceived by the graduate students of International Max Plank Research School in Molecular Biology to widen their own horizons beyond the rut of classes and lab work. Ever since, Horizons has grown from a humble idea to one of the most sought-after events in Göttingen and Germany. Horizons aims to bridge the gap between young scientists and experienced researchers by promoting them to engage in a productive dialog and exchange information. This year, we have planned four exhilarating days of presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions, and workshops aimed to inform, inspire and pique the interest of the young, scientific mind. One could describe Horizons as a platform built to facilitate interactions between participants and speakers! We therefore invite you to engage with our roster of distinguished speakers from diverse fields of work during their presentation or even over a cup of coffee. Do not miss this opportunity to network with your favourite speakers and participants from around the world. Should you require an introduction, we are glad to help you! From academia to far and beyond! Our Career Fair is specially tailored to meet the needs and expectations of a budding researcher. In addition to our informative talks and educational workshops, we also have a ‘Speed Dating’ event where you can gain valuable insights from the diverse speakers in a personalized and informal setting. Make sure to sign up for this unique experience! The life of a PhD student can be full of many rewarding moments driven by curiosity and hardships. However, in the journey towards a PhD, the highs are often fraught with disheartening lows too. Being all too familiar with the experience, we thought that advice from those who persevered and succeeded could shed some light on the ‘tricks of the trade’. To this aim, the Panel Discussion titled ‘Troubles of a young scientist: Fantastic ideas and where to Find them’ will take place on the final day of the conference. Learning from the experiences of accomplished scientists is of vital importance, however, here at Horizons, we believe it is equally imperative to support and network with our peers. The Poster Sessions and Awarded Student Talks provide just such an opportunity. We encourage everyone to actively participate in the sessions and vote for which poster appealed to you the most! We look forward to having you here with us and hope to make this not only an educational experience, but also a memorable one.

Book excerpt: The first part of the MIE 2008 conference theme - eHealth Beyond the Horizon - highlights the expectations for the future of ehealth and raises the question: What sort of developments in ehealth services can we imagine emerging above the horizon in the years to come? EHealth Beyond the Horizon contains a good number of high-quality papers giving different perspectives of this future, some of them already available today in picot scale, some of them outlined in visions. The second part of the theme - Get IT There - has triggered a large number of papers describing how to create, evaluate, adjust and deliver products and deploy services in healthcare organizations for the necessary information technology as a basis for the ehealth applications that are essential in order to respond to the challenges of the health systems. The papers in the proceedings are grouped by themes according to the submission categories and the supplied keywords. As the last theme, three doctoral students from different areas of medical informatics were selected to present and discuss their research under the guidance of a panel of distinguished research faculties.

Book excerpt: The Fourth International Congress in Quantum Chemistry under the auspices of the International Academy of Molecular Quantum Science in Menton, France was arranged at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, during the period June 14 - 19, 1982, in close collaboration with the University of Florida. The previous congresses were held in Menton 1973, New Orleans 1976, and Kyoto 1979, and the 1985 congress is tentatively planned to be held in the province of Quebec, Canada. The Congress consisted of six symposia in various areas of quantum chemistry, solid-state theory, and quantum bi ology. The meeting was attended by about 450 scientists from 45 different nations, and a total of more than 300 scientific papers were presented. Even the poster contri butions were given some plenary time. These proceedings contain the text of the plenary lec tures as well as the chairmen's introductions, whereas the contributed papers will be published in the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, (John Wiley & Sons, New York) in the regular January - April 1983 issues.

Useful to anyone interested in microbes, the book is intended to especially benefit four groups: trained microbiologists working within one specific area of microbiology; people with training in other disciplines, and use microorganisms as a tool or "chemical reagent"; business people evaluating investments in microbiology focused companies; and an emerging group, people in occupations and trades that might have limited training in microbiology, but who require specific practical information. Key Features Provides a comprehensive compendium of basic information on microorganisms—from classical microbiology to genomics. Includes coverage of disease-causing bacteria, bacterial viruses (phage), and the use of phage for treating diseases, and added coverage of extremophiles. Features comprehensive coverage of antimicrobial agents, including chapters on anti-fungals and anti-virals. Covers the Microbiome, gene editing with CRISPR, Parasites, Fungi, and Animal Viruses. Adds numerous chapters especially intended for professionals such as healthcare and industrial professionals, environmental scientists and ecologists, teachers, and businesspeople. Book excerpt: Biodegradation mediated by indigenous microbial communities is the ultimate fate of the majority of oil hydrocarbon that enters the marine environment. The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight recent advances in our knowledge of the pathways and controls of microbially-catalyzed hydrocarbon degradation in marine ecosystems, with emphasis on the response of microbial communities to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In this Research Topic, we encouraged original research and reviews on the ecology of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, the rates and mechanisms of biodegradation, and the bioremediation of discharged oil under situ as well as near in situ conditions.

Book excerpt: Reprinted from Plant and Soil, v.174, nos.1-2 (1995), this volume is devoted to discussions on the role of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in agricultural sustainability. Papers presented on BNF in crop forage and tree legumes are augmented with discussion of integrated farming systems involving BNF, soil and N management, and recycling of legume residues. BNF by non-legumes is discussed and attempts to transform cereals into nodulating plants are critically reviewed. Also described are advances in the development of new methodologies to understand symbiotic interactions and to assess N-2 fixation in the field; means of enhancing BNF through plant and soil management; breeding and selection; problems encountered in exploiting BNF under farmers' field conditions; and promising approaches to improve BNF exploitation.
