Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would appear that J.S. Bach really composed his two- and three-part Inventions (Sinfonias) on purpose to prepare his pupils for his larger works, - especially for his "Well-Tempered Clavier", - and as such they cannot be too urgently recommended. And to this day, a diligent study of these Inventions will greatly benefit every talented student of the piano who desires to rise above mediocrity; they will cultivate his musical taste and develop his technic. For in no modern, easy piece of music is the left hand given so independent of a treatment of the theme as in these Inventions. Edited By: Carl Czerny (1791–1857) Friedrich Conrad Griepenkerl (1742–1849) Friedrich August Roitzsch (1805–1889) (Note: This edition contains only the 15 Sinfonias (three-part Inventions), and not the 15 (two-part) Inventions.)

Book excerpt: Like the two-part inventions, Bach's three-part inventions (also known as Sinfonias) were composed as instructional material for his son, Wilhelm Friedemann. In researching the sinfonias, Willard A. Palmer discovered that previous editors had misinterpreted an important note in Sinfonia No. 11. Such careful research is a hallmark of Palmer's Bach editions.

This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach's two-part Inventions and three-part Sinfonias (BWV 787-801) have come down to us in an autograph fair copy dated 1723. The Inventions in particular are of merely moderate difficulty and occupy an important place in piano teaching to this day. In terms of their overall organization, the 15 pieces can be seen as leading on to the Wohltemperiertes Klavier. In keeping with normal practice, they were initially distributed in the form of handmade copies, with regular reference to the autograph. The present Urtext edition is based on Bach's autograph as well and has been compared against the NBA. In some of the pieces, the composer himself added additional ornaments at a later stage but did not otherwise undertake significant alterations. In every respect, this new edition of the collection therefore represents an authoritative musical text, without amendments or additions deriving from contemporary secondary sources. The Editorial Report gives details regarding textual criticism, the nature of the manuscript and the later additions

When confronted with competing horizontal lines, though, we are called upon to rethink our predilection for spinning a single line beautifully to the right. To some it may seem sacrilege, but we must think more vertically. In these pages we consider the techniques of coordinating more than one musical line. We learn to apply principles of grouping notes together and shaping lines in certain ways for technical ease. We consider fingerings, sometimes more than one. When technical solutions coincide with musical objectives, we are delighted. But when there is a technical problem, we examine it on its own merits. No mindless rote here. We consider approaches to ornamentation and articulation and their expressive partners, dynamics and phrasing. All of this gently couched in physical movements so natural to the body as to be irresistible.***Praise for the previous volume, "Piano Technique Demystified": "This is an excellent book. Whether you are an advanced pianist or a novice, the concepts shared in this book will bring your technical skills at the piano to a new level." "This is a very well written book with lots of humor and fascinating anecdotes shared by the author. The reader is sure to find a wealth of useful and helpful information to enhance mastery of the piano." "Neil Stannard provides a clear, concise summary of how to co-ordinate good movement patterns into your piano practice. He approaches learning difficult repertoire as a series of solvable problems, and offers the reader many tools to come up with solutions."
