Book excerpt: These proceedings will be of interest to High Energy Physicists, Faculty and post doctoral researchers working in the area of neutrino physics, muon physics, and Accelerator Engineers involved in the design and construction of muon colliders, and neutrino factories. Recently, the neutrino physics has undergone many important developments having far reaching consequences in our understanding of standard model of particle physics. New next generation experiments involving neutrinos are being planned, wherein decisive and precision measurements are required to explore the physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Neutrino beams of high intensity as well as quality and purity are required for these. The present workshop is a part of the series of annual meetings, the international workshop on Neutrino Factories, Super-beams, beta-beams (NUFACT) devoted to discuss the physics, accelerator and detector technologies of novel and conventional neutrino beams. In addition, the physics of neutrino scattering and experiments involving intense muon beams were also discussed in this meeting.

Book excerpt: Neutrinos are the most enigmatic of all known elementary particles, able to penetrate kilometers of material and pass through the entire earth, emitted in enormous numbers by the sun and by nuclear reactors. New techniques are being invented to bring unprecedented precision to their study and understand their possible role in the creation of the Universe. The facilities being discussed will also advance the study of muons –– massive unstable “cousins” of the electron. The NuFact series of annual international workshops, of which this is the 11th, brings together members of all of the major groups involved in the planning of such future physics facilities for the free exchange and advancement of ideas.

Book excerpt: The workshop has reviewed progress towards the future generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. These experiments will use very intense conventional neutrino beams and novel beams derived from muons or radioactive nuclei. These new facilities will provide a broad research front including muon physics and neutrino scattering experiments. The main technical challenges involve construction of very intense proton beams, targeting, effective capture of produced particles, cooling and ultra-fast acceleration of the resulting muons.

The theory of a two-componentneutrino,whichplayedacrucialroleinthecreationofthetheoryof theweakinteraction, isbasedontheassumptionthattheneutrinomassisequalto zero. We now know that neutrinos have nonzero, small masses. In numerous exp- iments with solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrinos a new p- nomenon, neutrino oscillations, was observed. Neutrino oscillations (periodic transitionsbetweendifferent?avorneutrinos? ,? ,? )arepossibleonlyifneutrino e ? ? mass-squareddifferencesaredifferentfromzeroandsmalland?avorneutrinosare “mixed”. The discovery of neutrino oscillations opened a new era in neutrino physics: an era of investigation of neutrino masses, mixing, magnetic moments and other neutrino properties. After the establishment of the Standard Model of the el- troweak interaction at the end of the seventies, the discovery of neutrino masses was the most important discovery in particle physics. Small neutrino masses cannot be explained by the standard Higgs mechanism of mass generation. For their explanation a new mechanism is needed. Thus, small neutrino masses is the ?rst signature in particle physics of a new beyond the Standard Model physics. It took many years of heroic efforts by many physicists to discover n- trino oscillations. After the ?rst period of investigation of neutrino oscillations, manychallengingproblemsremainedunsolved.Oneofthemostimportantisthe problem of the nature of neutrinos with de?nite masses. Are they Dirac n- trinos possessing a conserved lepton number which distinguish neutrinos and antineutrinos or Majorana neutrinos with identical neutrinos and antineutrinos? Many experiments of the next generation and new neutrino facilities are now under preparation and investigation. There is no doubt that exciting results are ahead.

Book excerpt: "Neutrinos in Particle Physics, Astronomy and Cosmology" provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to neutrino physics, neutrino astronomy and neutrino cosmology. The intrinsic properties and fundamental interactions of neutrinos are described, as is the phenomenology of lepton flavor mixing, seesaw mechanisms and neutrino oscillations. The cosmic neutrino background, stellar neutrinos, supernova neutrinos and ultrahigh-energy cosmic neutrinos, together with the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry and other roles of massive neutrinos in cosmology, are discussed in detail. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in the fields of particle physics, particle astrophysics and cosmology. Dr. Zhizhong Xing is a professor at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; Dr. Shun Zhou is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Physics, Germany.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the basic concepts of the generation and manipulation of synchrotron light, its interaction with matter, and the application of synchrotron light in the “classical” techniques, while including some of the most modern technological developments. As much as possible, complicated mathematical derivations and formulas are avoided. A more heuristic approach is adopted, whereby the general physical reasoning behind the equations is highlighted. Key features: A general introduction to synchrotron radiation and experimental techniques using synchrotron radiation Contains many detailed “worked examples” from the literature Of interest for a broad audience - synchrotrons are possibly one of the best examples of multidisciplinary research Four-colour presentation throughout

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the study of weak interaction and its relationship with the other fundamnetal interactions of nature has progressed rapidly. Weak interactions of leptons and quarks provides an up-to-date account of this continuing research. The Introduction discusses early models and historical developments in the understanding of the weak force. The authors then give a clear presentation of the modern theoretical basis of weak interactions, going on to discuss recent advances in the field. These include development of the eletroweak gauge theory, and the discovery of neutral currents and of a host of new particles. There is also a chapter devoted entirely to neutrino astrophysics. Its straightforward style and its emphasis on experimental results will make this book an excellent source for students (problem sets are included at the end of each chapter) and experimentalists in the field. Physicists whose speciality lies outside the study of elementary particle physics will also find it useful.

This volume provides a comprehensive and pedagogical introduction to modern ideas and challenging problems in nuclear and particle astrophysics. Based on a graduate school, specially written articles by eight leading experts cover a wealth of exciting topics, including the search for black holes, nucleosynthesis and neutrino transport in supernovae, the physics of neutron stars, massive neutrinos, cosmic ray physics and astrophysics, and physical cosmology. Together, they present the Universe as a laboratory for testing cutting-edge physics and bridge the gap between conference proceedings and specialised monographs. This volume provides an invaluable resource for graduate students and active researchers in nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology.

Book excerpt: This unique new book is a comprehensive review of the many current industrial applications of particle accelerators, written by experts in each of these fields. Readers will gain a broad understanding of the principles of these applications, the extent to which they are employed, and the accelerator technology utilized. The book also serves as a thorough introduction to these fields for non-experts and laymen. Due to the increased interest in industrial applications, there is a growing interest among accelerator physicists and many other scientists worldwide in understanding how accelerators are used in various applications. The government agencies that fund scientific research with accelerators are also seeking more information on the many commercial applications that have been or can be developed with the technology developments they are funding. Many industries are also doing more research on how they can improve their products or processes using particle beams
