With its control systems, it provides the basis for the further development of driver assistance systems which support the driver in the task ofdriving the vehicle. This applies to an even greater extent to autonomous vehicles. Electromechanical steering and steerby-wire systems are one solution available. At the sametime, the brake system as a safety component needs to be developed in such a way that it fulfills the requirements of powertrain hybridization and electrification.

For the chassis too, the connected car is increasingly becoming a driver of innovation. Predictive and intelligent chassis systems and automated driving are just some of the topics being addressed. In addition to enhancing driving comfort and safety, interconnecting the powertrain with the chassis can also provide new functions, not only in cars but also in commercial vehicles. What is more, modularization, electrification of the powertrain, intelligent development methods and efforts to reduce fuel consumption are also driving innovations in chassis systems.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we present novel model predictive control (MPC) formulations based on a convex open-loop optimal control problem to tackle the problem setup of trajectory tracking and path following as well as the control of systems with unknown system dynamic. In particular, we consider the framework of relaxed barrier function based MPC (rbMPC). We extend the existing stability theory to the trajectory tracking and the path following problem. We establish important system theoretic properties like closed-loop stability and exact constraint satisfaction under suitable assumptions. Moreover, we evaluate the developed MPC algorithms in the area of automated driving in simulations as well as in a real-world driving scenario. Further, we consider the control of completely unknown systems based on online optimization. We divide the overall problem into the design of an estimation algorithm and a control algorithm. The control algorithm is a model-independent receding horizon control algorithm in which important system theoretic properties like convergence to the origin are guaranteed without the knowledge of the true system parameters. The estimation and control algorithm are combined together and convergence to the origin of the closed-loop system for fully unknown linear time-invariant discrete-time systems is shown.

Book excerpt: Vehicle performance is largely controlled by the tire dynamic characteristics mediated by forces and moments generated at the tire-road contact patch. The tire may undergo deformations that increase the longitudinal and lateral forces within the contact patch. It is crucial to develop a model for the accurate prediction of tire characteristics, as this will enable optimization of the overall performance of vehicles. Research has been conducted to identify new strategies for tire measurement and modeling vehicle dynamics analysis. Autonomous vehicles (AVs), electric vehicles (EVs), shared sets, and connected vehicles have further revolutionized interdisciplinary research on vehicle and tire systems. The performance and reliability of vehicle active safety and advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) are primarily influenced by the tire force capacity, which cannot be measured. High active safety and optimized ADAS are particularly crucial for automated driving systems (ADS) to guarantee passenger safety in intelligent transportation settings. The establishment of online measurement or estimation tools for tire states, especially for autonomous vehicles, is critical.

Book excerpt: This Open Access book presents the results of the "Collaborative Embedded Systems" (CrESt) project, aimed at adapting and complementing the methodology underlying modeling techniques developed to cope with the challenges of the dynamic structures of collaborative embedded systems (CESs) based on the SPES development methodology. In order to manage the high complexity of the individual systems and the dynamically formed interaction structures at runtime, advanced and powerful development methods are required that extend the current state of the art in the development of embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. The methodological contributions of the project support the effective and efficient development of CESs in dynamic and uncertain contexts, with special emphasis on the reliability and variability of individual systems and the creation of networks of such systems at runtime. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the case studies are therefore selected from areas that are highly relevant for Germany’s economy (automotive, industrial production, power generation, and robotics). It also supports the digitalization of complex and transformable industrial plants in the context of the German government's "Industry 4.0" initiative, and the project results provide a solid foundation for implementing the German government's high-tech strategy "Innovations for Germany" in the coming years.

Book excerpt: The 6th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation, initiated by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), was again hosted by DLR, the German Aerospace Center. The participation of scientists, engineers, and managers from 24 countries reflected the high interest in the use of small satellites for dedicated missions applied to Earth observation. The contributions showed that dedicated Earth observation missions cover a wide range of very different tasks.
