Book excerpt: William Shakespeare "the poet" is usually represented in book form by the Sonnets, together with perhaps a few songs from the plays. And yet few would deny that they plays are essentially "poetic". How often have we search the Complete Works for well-known yet half-remembered lines, or quoted speeches as if they wee individual poems, not quite recalling which play they are from or who spoke them in what situation? This selection offers several of the classic speeches. It also includes a selection from the Sonnets. Where a play excerpt has been used, the context is indicated.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Complete Poetry & Sonnets of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Table of Contents: The Sonnets Venus And Adonis The Rape Of Lucrece The Passionate Pilgrim The Phoenix And The Turtle A Lover’s Complaint Shakespeare's sonnets are a collection of 154 sonnets, dealing with themes such as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality, first published in a 1609 quarto entitled Shakespeares Sonnets. Venus and Adonis is a poem written in 1592–1593 and published in 1609. It recounts Venus' attempts to woo Adonis, their passionate coupling, and Adonis' rejection of the goddess, to which she responds with jealousy, with tragic results. The Rape of Lucrece, published in 1594, is a narrative poem focusing on the rape and tragic death of the title character and on the revenge that follows. The Passionate Pilgrim, published in 1599, is an anthology of 20 poems collected and published by William Jaggard that were attributed to "W. Shakespeare" on the title page, only five of which are considered authentically Shakespearean. These are two sonnets, later to be published in the 1609 collection of Shakespeare's sonnets, and three poems extracted from the play Love's Labour's Lost. The Phoenix and the Turtle, first published in 1601, is an allegorical poem about the death of ideal love, widely considered to be one of his most obscure works and has led to many conflicting interpretations. The poem describes a funeral arranged for the deceased Phoenix and Turtledove, the latter a traditional emblem of devoted love. A Lover's Complaint is a narrative poem published as an appendix to the original edition of Shakespeare's sonnets. It is given the title "A Lover's Complaint" in the book, which was published in 1609. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain.

Book excerpt: WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: COMPLETE POEMS This book features all of William Shakespeare's poetry, including the Sonnets, Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece and The Passionate Pilgrim. Each poem is printed on its own on the page, without footnotes and annotations. Includes a bibliography of references. This is from 'The Passionate Pilgrim': Two loves I have, of comfort and despair, That like two spirits do suggest me still; My better angel is a man right fair, My worser spirit a woman colour'd ill. To win me soon to hell, my female evil Tempteth my better angel from my side, And would corrupt my saint to be a devil, Wooing his purity with her fair pride. And whether that my angel be turn'd fiend, Suspect I may, yet not directly tell: For being both to me, both to each friend, I guess one angel in another's hell; The truth I shall not know, but live in doubt, Till my bad angel fire my good one out.

Book excerpt: In 1593 Shakespeare awoke and found himself famous. Lines from his comic, erotic, tragic poem Venus and Adonis were on everyoneÂ's lips. The appearance in 1594 of the darkly reflective and richly descriptive Rape of Lucrece confirmed his fame as 'Sweet Master Shakespeare', Elizabethan England's most brilliant non-dramatic poet. Shorter poems in this volume testify further to ShakespeareÂ's versatility and to his poetic fame. Some, like the much-debated Â'Phoenix and TurtleÂ', pose problems of meaning; others raise questions about authorship and authenticity. Detailed annotation and a full Introduction seek to resolve such difficulties while also locating Shakespeare's poems in their literary context, which includes his own career as a playwright.
