Book excerpt: A photographic and multidisciplinary study of one of America’s last undeveloped—and most endangered—landscapes, edited by a Pulitzer Prize–winning author. A vast expanse of rock formations, sand dunes, and sagebrush in central and southwest Wyoming, the little-known Red Desert is one of the last undeveloped landscapes in the United States, as well as one of the most endangered. It is a last refuge for many species of wildlife. Sitting atop one of North America's largest untapped reservoirs of natural gas, the Red Desert is a magnet for energy producers who are damaging its complex and fragile ecosystem in a headlong race to open a new domestic source of energy and reap the profits. To capture and preserve what makes the Red Desert both valuable and scientifically and historically interesting, writer Annie Proulx and photographer Martin Stupich enlisted a team of scientists and scholars to join them in exploring the Red Desert through many disciplines: geology, hydrology, paleontology, ornithology, zoology, entomology, botany, climatology, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, and history. Their essays reveal many fascinating, often previously unknown facts about the Red Desert—everything from the rich pocket habitats that support an amazing diversity of life to engrossing stories of the transcontinental migrations that began in prehistory and continue today on I-80—which bisects the Red Desert. Complemented by Martin Stupich’s photo-essay, which portrays both the beauty and the devastation that characterize the region today, Red Desert bears eloquent witness to a unique landscape in its final years as a wild place./

Roehler and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geology of six geographically separated but geneti- cally related heavy-mineral placer deposits are investigated along 40 miles of coastal-marine sandstone outcrops comprising the McCourt Sandstone Tongue. The heavy- mineral placer deposits consist of dark-brown to black, fine- to medium-grained, ferruginous sandstones that occur in elongated lenses that are as much as 6.6 ft thick and 2,000 ft long. The placer deposits are mostly intercalated with light-gray or tan quartzose shoreline sandstones that offlapped southeastward across the study area and formed a strand plain during a regression of the interior Cretaceous sea. The placers were deposited along a single shoreline during one stage of the regression. The heavy-mineral placer deposits are composed of about 85 percent opaque iron minerals, mostly magnetite, hematite, and ilmenite, and about 15 percent nonopaque minerals, mostly zircon, with minor amounts of tourmaline, rutile, garnet, sphene, hornblende, apatite, and traces of other minerals. The depositional settings are river mouth, berm, forebeach, surf, and middle shoreface, where the segregation of light and heavy minerals took place by fluvial, marine, and eolian processes. A plutonic source for most of the heavy minerals was probably the Sevier orogenic belt located 150-250 miles west of the study area. The heavy-mineral deposits in the McCourt Tongue are analogous in origin to that of heavy-mineral deposits that are presently forming along the southeast Atlantic and gulf coasts of the United States.

Book excerpt: The outcome of a symposium held in Fribourg, Switzerland, this book fulfils two aims. Firstly, it represents a collection of case-studies covering a wide range of basin types and tectonic and stratigraphic settings. Secondly, it highlights a number of specific themes such as the history of subsidence and its relation to orogenesis, the stratigraphic architecture of the basin fill and the petrographic signature of foreland basin deposits. The text comprises five sections with a total of 26 contributions and it will be of special interest to teachers, researchers and petroleum geologists concerned with the relationships between tectonics and sedimentation. This is because it clearly demonstrates the many recent advances within the field of basin analysis by an integration of sedimentological, stratigraphical, structural and geophysical data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'sedimentary cover' refers to the stratified rocks of youngest Proterozoic and Phanerozoic age that rest upon the largely crystalline basement rocks of the continental interior. This volume presents data and interpretations of the geophysics of the craton and summarizes the craton's tectonic evolution. It also presents the stratigraphy, structural history, and economic geology of specific sedimentary basins (e.g. Appalachian basin) and regions (e.g. Rocky Mountains). It concludes with a discussion of the currently popular theories of cratonal tectonics, & unresolved questions are identified.
