Book Synopsis Language Contact and Lexical Enrichment in Israeli Hebrew by : G. Zuckermann
Download or read book Language Contact and Lexical Enrichment in Israeli Hebrew written by G. Zuckermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-11-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli Hebrew is a spoken language, 'reinvented' over the last century. It has responded to the new social and technological demands of globalization with a vigorously developing multisourced lexicon, enriched by foreign language contact. In this detailed and rigorous study, the author provides a principled classification of neologisms, their semantic fields and the roles of source languages, along with a sociolinguistic study of the attitudes of 'purists' and ordinary native speakers in the tension between linguistic creativity and the preservation of a distinct language identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important transformations in the world today is the adaptation to education and teaching methods that must be made to enhance the learning experience for Millennial and Generation Z students. The system in which the student is passive and the teacher is active is no longer the most effective form of education. Additionally, with the increased availability to information, knowledge transfer is no longer done solely by the teacher. Educators need to become moderators in order to promote effective teaching practices. Paradigm Shifts in 21st Century Teaching and Learning is an essential scholarly publication that examines new approaches to learning and their application in the teaching-learning process. Featuring a wide range of topics such as game-based learning, curriculum design, and sustainability, this book is ideal for teachers, curriculum developers, instructional designers, researchers, education professionals, administrators, academicians, educational policymakers, and students.
Book Synopsis Prologue to Lewis and Clark by : W. Raymond Wood
Download or read book Prologue to Lewis and Clark written by W. Raymond Wood and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “To follow the journeys made by Mackay and Evans up the Missouri and across the plains in 1795–97 is to begin to appreciate the kind of world Lewis and Clark found when they voyaged up the river in 1804. . . . Of all those waterways, none has captured the American imagination more than the Missouri. . . . It is a river of promise, of dreams, and of dreams denied.” –James P. Ronda, from the Foreword When Mackay and Evans returned to Spanish St. Louis in 1797, they were hailed as “the two most illustrious travelers in the northern parts of this continent.” Ironically, though the findings of Mackay and Evans were responsible for much of the early success of Lewis and Clark in their expedition, the adulation that followed Lewis and Clark’s successful return completely eclipsed Mackay and Evans’s reputations. In Prologue to Lewis and Clark, W. Raymond Wood narrates the history of this long-forgotten but important expedition up the Missouri River. The Mackay and Evans expedition was more than an exploratory mission. It was the last effort by Spain to gain control over the Missouri River basin in the decade before the United States purchased the Louisiana territory. In that respect, it failed. But the expedition was successful as a journey of exploration. The maps and documents they created later provided the Lewis and Clark expedition with invaluable information for its first full year. Consolidating a collection of eighteen contemporary documents relating to the Mackay and Evans expedition as well as his own research and analysis, Wood provides an in-depth examination of the expedition’s background, execution, and final results. Volume 79 in the American Exploration and Travel Series

Book Synopsis Forest Management and the Water Cycle by : Michael Bredemeier
Download or read book Forest Management and the Water Cycle written by Michael Bredemeier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protective function of forests for water quality and water-related hazards, as well as adequate water supplies for forest ecosystems in Europe, are potentially at risk due to changing climate and changing land-management practices. Water budgets of forest ecosystems are heavily dependent on climate and forest structure. The latter is determined by the management measures applied in the forestry sector. Various developments of forest management strategies, imposed on a background of changing climate, are considered in assessing the overall future of forest–water interactions in Europe. Synthesizing recent research on the interactions of forest management and the water regime of forests in Europe and beyond, the book makes an important contribution to the ongoing dialogue between scientists dealing with different scales of forest-water interactions. This collaborative endeavour, which covers geographic and climatic gradients from Iceland to Israel and from southern Spain to Estonia and Finland, was made possible through the COST Action "Forest Management and the Water Cycle (FORMAN)", which was launched in 2007 (http://www.forestandwater.eu/). The book will be of particular interest to the research community involved in forest ecosystem research and forest hydrology, as well as landscape ecologists and hydrologists in general. It will also provide reference material for forest practitioners and planners in hydrology and land use.

Download or read book Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country written by Frederick E. Hoxie and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country" broadens the scope of conventional study of the Lewis and Clark expedition to include Native American perspectives. Frederick E. Hoxie and Jay T. Nelson present the expedition s long-term impact on the Indian Country and its residents through compelling interviews conducted with Native Americans over the past two centuries, secondary literature, Lewis and Clark travel journals, and other primary sources from the Newberry Library s exhibit Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country. Rich stories of Native Americans, travelers, ranchers, Columbia River fur traders, teachers, and missionaries often in conflict with each other--illustrate complex interactions between settlers and tribal people. Environmental protection issues and the preservation of Native language, education, and culture dominate late twentieth-century discussions, while early accounts document important Native American alliances with Lewis and Clark. In widening the reader s interpretive lens to include many perspectives, this collection reaches beyond individual achievement to appreciate America s plural past."
