Book excerpt: For this second book in the Transport Philately series on public transport issues featured on postage stamps, once again the author will combine two of his lifelong hobbies as he looks at railways around the world on standard gauge tracks that encompasses the majority of the western worlds major railway arteries. The book will also illustrate railways on other, similar gauges of track where they constitute a country's major arteries, but it is not an exhaustive survey encompassing every country and every issue for that one needs to refer to major catalog issues by such well-known authorities as Stanley Gibbons Plc.There have been many and varied reasons why postal authorities have issued stamps featuring railway subjects, varying from major anniversaries to national pride, the latter often from the former Eastern-bloc countries but that is not by all means. The Royal Mail in the UK has certainly not ignored railways, especially in later years, and the author will visit probably more of his native country's stamps than most other countries', but he's biased. The author often looks in his albums to try to understand why a particular country will sometimes be represented by bulging sections, while others are represented by but one or two stamps. And so, the book follows the story around the world in roughly an eastern journey, learning about some of the national histories on the way and admiring the attentions of some extremely accomplished artists that mean philatelists and rail-lovers alike can enjoy many beautiful miniature works of art.

Book excerpt: This, the first of four books, looks at the treatment of varying aspects of public transport with the aid of postage stamps, either issued by the postal authorities of most of the worlds nations, or some of the railway companies themselves, especially heritage operators. It has long intrigued the author as to why narrow gauge systems throughout the world have demanded a far greater attention from the public and stamp producers than railway subjects from the standard gauge lines, which make up the vast majority of the western worlds major railway systems. The conclusion he has reached is that in most cases they are considered cute a truly abominable term, which is (thankfully) gradually fading from our vocabulary, but just how the author felt on first seeing engines of the Talyllyn Railway, in mid-Wales, from the top of the station approach at Tywyns Wharf Station: tiny little kettles in sparkling, rich green and lots of brass. The Talyllyn has the double honor of being the worlds first railway to be taken-over and operated by a preservation society in 1951, and also the first railway in the modern era to issue its own Railway Letter Service stamps, a practice that can be traced back to the very earliest of times, which allowed people in outlying areas to send letters by the railways to the nearest post office for onward transport. The Talyllyns first stamps were issued in 1957, and today the lucky collector can demand a substantial premium on the paltry issue value. From whatever origin or country, there is a huge variety of stamps covering narrow gauge railways, and usually they are attractive miniature works of art that make them very collectable. The author has not set out to cover every country or issue in these books, but to present a wide selection of those stamps that are note-worthy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a span of almost two centuries, Railroad History on American Postage Stamps tells the stories behind the many United States postage stamps that portray railroad history. Almost 200 stamps depicting railroading highlights including land grants, the completion of the transcontinental railroad, railroad heroes (from John Henry to Casey Jones), and equipment from famous locomotives to workaday freight cars are described in fascinating vignettes. In addition, a major chapter covers railroad issues, labor and the law. There is even a section identifying many famous individuals with surprising railroad associations including Irving Berlin, Nelly Bly, John Wayne, Samuel Clemens, Emily Dickinson, Will Rogers and Cary Grant. Extensively researched by the author over a period of more than two years, the book treats the reader to a treasure trove of little-known yet interesting facts that capture the reader's attention from the first page to last. Includes an extensive bibliography and Scott Number index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Postage Stamps and Their Collection, Vol. 1 Of the many advantages to be derived from a hobby of some sort it seems hardly necessary to speak, but a few words may be said on the hobby of stamp collecting, which by many, nowadays, has been reduced to a science. Intelligent collecting of anything - stamps, coins, books, objects of art, or the like - is to be commended, whether a man confines himself by force of circumstances or choice, to a limited field, or whether he feels at liberty and induced to cover a larger territory. And this commendation of stamp collecting is due not only because of the solace and enjoyment that it gives a man, tired by the days duties, but also to the increase in knowledge of history, geography, and politics, which march hand in hand with his increasing interest in the technical side of his subject. On the other side, there are two kinds of collecting to be deprecated; the mere striving for numbers or amount; and the purchase of stamps from a purely mercenary point of view. Of the special school to be followed in collecting stamps, each collector must take his own choice, being governed by his means and desires. However, it is safe to say that he is a courageous man who, today, starts out to make a general collection of stamps from the first, even along narrow lines. Specializing is becoming, if it has not already become, the order of the day, and in stamp collecting this is almost inevitable to a greater or lesser degree. From the mere law of supply and demand, this specializing is obviously bound to increase as time goes on. To the stamp collecting public commendation of this little book and its author seems almost superfluous. As a close student of stamps for many years, not only in business, but as a collector, Mr. Colson is admirably fitted to write on die subject he has chosen. It is a pleasure to wish him and his book the success that both deserve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A collection of full-color artwork from World War One that illustrates the immense destruction and human turmoil of The Great War. World War One raged from 1914 through 1918. Before the advent of modern video and photography, artists documented it using a variety of mediums for newspapers and magazines from the era. Using their imagination and technical skill, these talented illustrators and painters created something beautiful out of something terrible that gives a candid look at one humanity's greatest conflicts. The Art of World War 1 collects more than 100 brilliant pieces from the WW1-era depicting French, British, German, American troops, and more involved in the struggle. Stunning color illustrations from artists like Francois Flameng, Charles Hoffbauer, G. Koch, Georges Scott, Willy Stöwer, and more fill the pages with intimate scenes and epic shots of destruction. Included are prints featuring air combat, soldiers charging, tanks, boats, and the aftermath of battle. Using pens, pencils, paints, and brushes, they captured the action and emotion of The Great War in a way that film could not. In many cases, these brave individuals traveled to the front lines and sketched, drew, and painted what they saw. More than 100 years after its creation, their art is more vivid and impactful today than ever before.
