Book Synopsis The Modern Satiric Grotesque and Its Traditions by : John R. Clark
Download or read book The Modern Satiric Grotesque and Its Traditions written by John R. Clark and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Mann predicted that no manner or mode in literature would be so typical or so pervasive in the twentieth century as the grotesque. Assuredly he was correct. The subjects and methods of our comic literature (and much of our other literature) are regularly disturbing and often repulsive -- no laughing matter. In this ambitious study, John R. Clark seeks to elucidate the major tactics and topics deployed in modern literary dark humor. In Part I he explores the satiric strategies of authors of the grotesque, strategies that undercut conventional usage and form: the de-basement of heroes, the denigration of language and style, the disruption of normative narrative technique, and even the debunking of authors themselves. Part II surveys major recurrent themes of grotesquerie: tedium, scatology, cannibalism, dystopia, and Armageddon or the end of the world. Clearly the literature of the grotesque is obtrusive and ugly, its effect morbid and disquieting -- and deliberately meant to be so. Grotesque literature may be unpleasant, but it is patently insightful. Indeed, as Clark shows, all of the strategies and topics employed by this literature stem from age-old and spirited traditions. Critics have complained about this grim satiric literature, asserting that it is dank, cheerless, unsavory, and negative. But such an interpretation is far too simplistic. On the contrary, as Clark demonstrates, such grotesque writing, in its power and its prevalence in the past and present, is in fact conventional, controlled, imaginative, and vigorous -- no mean achievements for any body of art.

Download or read book Principles and Practice of Big Data written by Jules J Berman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles and Practice of Big Data: Preparing, Sharing, and Analyzing Complex Information, Second Edition updates and expands on the first edition, bringing a set of techniques and algorithms that are tailored to Big Data projects. The book stresses the point that most data analyses conducted on large, complex data sets can be achieved without the use of specialized suites of software (e.g., Hadoop), and without expensive hardware (e.g., supercomputers). The core of every algorithm described in the book can be implemented in a few lines of code using just about any popular programming language (Python snippets are provided). Through the use of new multiple examples, this edition demonstrates that if we understand our data, and if we know how to ask the right questions, we can learn a great deal from large and complex data collections. The book will assist students and professionals from all scientific backgrounds who are interested in stepping outside the traditional boundaries of their chosen academic disciplines. Presents new methodologies that are widely applicable to just about any project involving large and complex datasets Offers readers informative new case studies across a range scientific and engineering disciplines Provides insights into semantics, identification, de-identification, vulnerabilities and regulatory/legal issues Utilizes a combination of pseudocode and very short snippets of Python code to show readers how they may develop their own projects without downloading or learning new software
Download or read book The Soft Machine written by David Porush and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soft Machine, originally published in 1985, represents a significant contribution to the study of contemporary literature in the larger cultural and scientific context. David Porush shows how the concepts of cybernetics and artificial intelligence that have sparked our present revolution in computer and information technology have also become the source for images and techniques in our most highly sophisticated literature, postmodern fiction by Barthelme, Barth, Pynchon, Beckett, Burroughs, Vonnegut and others. With considerable skill, Porush traces the growth of "the metaphor of the machine" as it evolves both technologically and in literature of the twentieth century. He describes the birth of cybernetics, gives one of the clearest accounts for a lay audience of its major concepts and shows the growth of philosophical resistance to the mechanical model for human intelligence and communication which cybernetics promotes, a model that had grown increasingly influential in the previous decade. The Soft Machine shows postmodern fiction synthesizing the inviting metaphors and concepts of cybernetics with the ideals of art, a synthesis that results in what Porush calls "cybernetic fiction" alive to the myths and images of a cybernetic age.

Book Synopsis The 13 Insanities of Modern Organizations by : Lee Thayer
Download or read book The 13 Insanities of Modern Organizations written by Lee Thayer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of this book’s readers will (astutely) see some parallels between this book and Thayer’s How Executives Fail. They both identify the kinds of weaknesses in an organization or its managers that will inevitably lead to its demise (or its mediocrity, which amounts to the same thing). That is inevitable. In his pioneering work of helping CEOs to transform their organizations for high-performance, Dr. Thayer has been developing a successful conceptual framework for understanding organization-making and life-making in general for 60+ years. His mantra for all of those years in his many books, his many consulting assignments here and abroad, and his many, many seminars with CEOs and other top executives, from Australia to Finland, from Greece to China, from Mexico to Canada, and major points in between. Although he started his career as a consultant to the leaders of the Fortune 500, he prefers working with small to medium-sized organizations where, as he says, “it is easier to see the impact being made.” He was more recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who, to add to his many awards over the years of his illustrious career as a consultant, author, and mentor. To date, he has published twenty-six books on his experiences and his research, and he is known worldwide for his perspective on the human condition, both at work and at home.

Download or read book South of South Beach written by Keith G. Laufenberg and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-07-05 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South of South Beach takes the reader back in time to the 60's and 70's during a time when South Beach was nothing like the glitzy, Art-Deco district it is today but more of a dilapidated, run-down section of real estate where Chris Dundee runs the 5th Street Gym and many transplanted prizefighters, Muhammad Ali among them, roam the streets looking for "something" to while away the hours while they prepare their bodies for the task of fighting another highly-trained boxer who wants to beat their brains out, even as they wish to do much the same to them. The girls stroll parts of South Beach in bikinis and the Beatles have even visited the 5th Street Gym recently; the beat generation is giving way to the hippie, free-love generation so come back in time and visit what today is one of the world's great vacation centers but, at this time during the 1960's was more of a slum or a ghetto --- to avoid at your own peril, especially a small stretch of beach just south of South Beach.
