This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking about buying an electric vehicle? If so, read this book first to make sure you have all the necessary facts so that you can make the best possible decision. Be wary! Many of the people you approach can't even answer your basic questions. I CAN! Some will intentionally or unwittingly give you false information. Even things on the internet that look legitimate can be misleading or incomplete. You have the power to make good choices when you have the right information. That is what this book is all about. By the end you will know everything you must know to have the confidence you need to make this important decision. Why ME! Over the past three years I have conducted hundreds of conversations and test drives with prospective buyers as a contracted Product Specialist for Plug'n Drive at the Electric Vehicle Discovery Centre (EVDC) in Toronto, Canada, on road trips, at school presentations, and at 4 major international auto shows. During that time span, I have driven 20 different models of EVs and PHEVs from 13 different manufacturers on a regular basis. The test-drives and conversations educated me on what people want to know about EVs and what they have been told, many times from ill-informed sources or those wishing to discourage their interest. I want to be the voice of reason by informing readers with little or no prior exposure to electric vehicles. To my horror, as I researched my topics to validate my input, I discovered how hard it is to locate useful, trustworthy information about many seemingly common and relatively simple queries. If I struggle, with all my knowledge, I can't imagine what you have faced in your quest for valid info. Don't leave anything to chance. Be prepared - this book will help. What you will learn The history of EVs from the beginning to modern times Types of electric vehicles - PHEV (plug-in hybrids**) and BEV (battery electric vehicle) How EV/PHEVs work Some things about batteries Charging your EV at home and on the road Cost comparison owning a BEV or PHEV vs. a gas car Other stuff you should know. ** Non-plug-in hybrids are not included in this book. My expertise and focus have been on plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles from the beginning. Busting some myths Also sprinkled throughout the book are several popular BEV/PHEV myths you should be aware of and the importance of knowing the truth, good or bad. We encourage readers to continue their own research into the areas for which they would like more detailed, specific information. Hopefully, this book will prepare you to make more effective inquiries. As much as I enjoy driving BEVs and PHEVs, I am not personally appealing to you to buy one. One of the cardinal rules at the Centre was that we do not sell cars; we provide education about them. That is an important personal decision and should not be made without considering the kinds of issues I raise in the book and how they relate to you. When you have completed the book, you will be better informed to make an appropriate decision about the purchase of an electric vehicle.

Book excerpt: A revelatory look at our national power grid--how it developed, its current flaws, and how it must be completely reimagined for our fast-approaching energy future. America's electrical grid, an engineering triumph of the twentieth century, is turning out to be a poor fit for the present. It's not just that the grid has grown old and is now in dire need of basic repair. Today, as we invest great hope in new energy sources--solar, wind, and other alternatives--the grid is what stands most firmly in the way of a brighter energy future. If we hope to realize this future, we need to reimagine the grid according to twenty-first-century values. It's a project which forces visionaries to work with bureaucrats, legislators with storm-flattened communities, moneymen with hippies, and the left with the right. And though it might not yet be obvious, this revolution is already well under way. Cultural anthropologist Gretchen Bakke unveils the many facets of America's energy infrastructure, its most dynamic moments and its most stable ones, and its essential role in personal and national life. The grid, she argues, is an essentially American artifact, one which developed with us: a product of bold expansion, the occasional foolhardy vision, some genius technologies, and constant improvisation. Most of all, her focus is on how Americans are changing the grid right now, sometimes with gumption and big dreams and sometimes with legislation or the brandishing of guns. The Grid tells--entertainingly, perceptively--the story of what has been called "the largest machine in the world": its fascinating history, its problematic present, and its potential role in a brighter, cleaner future.

Why do lies seem to linger so long in the cultural subconscious even after they’ve been thoroughly discredited? And why, when more people than ever before are documenting the truth with laptops and digital cameras, does fact-free spin and propaganda seem to work so well? True Enough explores leading controversies of national politics, foreign affairs, science, and business, explaining how Americans have begun to organize themselves into echo chambers that harbor diametrically different facts—not merely opinions—from those of the larger culture.

This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay sheds light on why why electric cars do not warrant the investment and also elucidates the the problems with buying an electric vehicle. Moreover, the criteria for how to determine if a car is worth the investment is delineated in this essay. Furthermore, how to earn substantial money online so that you can afford to finance your electric vehicle purchase is expounded upon in this essay. In spite of their touted merits, electric cars unequivocally do not warrant the investment. Even though electric cars operate more efficiently than gasoline powered vehicles and can therefore save you money on fuel costs and vehicle maintenance services, these vehicle running costs savings reaped over the course of ample years will not be substantial enough to even offset 50% of the exorbitant premium paid upfront to procure the electric vehicle over a gasoline powered vehicle. Electric vehicles tend to rapidly depreciate in value and are therefore not a prudent investment in your future. Moreover, charging times for an electric vehicle are long, electricity prices are on the rise, the lithium-ion battery in electric vehicles is deemed a potential fire hazard, and there is a lack of electric vehicle service centers which ultimately means that there are an abject lack of technicians who are competent in servicing electrical vehicles.Even though the cost of operating an electric vehicle if you already paid for it in full would be roughly one third of the cost of operating a gasoline powered vehicle, these savings reaped overtime on vehicle running costs, such as vehicle maintenance costs and fuel costs, do not offset the premium of $20,000-$50,000 exhausted upfront to procure an electric vehicle over a gasoline powered vehicle. "The average cost of an electric vehicle is $55,000 while the average cost of a gasoline powered four-door sedan is $35,000. Even though the engine of an electric vehicle has less moving parts, such as fan belts and spark plugs, which saves you money on replacement parts and service costs every year, the average yearly savings in maintenance for an electric vehicle owner is only approximately $800 a year" ("Electric Cars VS," 2019) even though you may have to pay a premium of at least $20,000 upfront to procure an electric vehicle over a gasoline powered vehicle. As per operating costs to drive the vehicle, "the breakdown for a gas-powered car VS an electric car comes out to be $9.83 per 100 miles for a gas car and $5.27 per 100 miles for an electric vehicle. When directly compared, the cost to power an electric vehicle is about half of what it costs to fuel your gas-powered car. It is important to note that pricing for power varies depending on your utility company and how they charge for power. For example, some utility companies charge higher Time-Of-Use (TOU) rates for things like 'peak hour usage, ' where the price of power is higher between 4 pm and 9 pm" ("Electric Cars VS," 2019). While this may seem enticing to be able to save on fuel costs by owning an electric vehicle, you will not drive your electric vehicle enough to defray the $20,000 premium paid to procure it over a gasoline powered vehicle by saving on fuel costs and vehicle maintenance costs. Much to the chagrin of electric vehicle owners, electric vehicles are not the most economical vehicles to own. "Owning and operating a new vehicle in 2017 costed a driver an average of $8,469 annually, or $706 each month, according to a new study from AAA. The annual evaluation of driving costs reveals that small sedans are the least expensive vehicles to drive at $6,354 annually, followed by small SUVs at $7,606 annually, and hybrids at $7,687 annually. New to the Your Driving Costs study in 2017, AAA found that electric vehicles have driving costs at $8,439 per year. Without a gasoline engine to maintain, electric vehicles have the lowest annual maintenance and repair costs, at $982 per year. ("Costs To Own," 2017)

Book excerpt: Drawing from the last decade of his 26-year career at the Wall Street Journal, where he covered energy and environmental matters, ClimateWire founder and industry insider John Fialka brings to life this thrilling and important story about American's rejection and second obsession with the electric car. The resurgence of the electric car in modern life is a tale of adventurers, men and women who bucked the complete dominance of the fossil fueled car to seek something cleaner, simpler and cheaper. Award-winning former Wall Street Journal reporter John Fialka documents the early days of the electric car, from the M.I.T./Caltech race between prototypes in the summer of 1968 to the 1987 victory of the Sunraycer in the world's first race featuring solar powered cars. Thirty years later, the electric has captured the imagination and pocketbooks of American consumers. Organizations like the U.S. Department of Energy and the state of California, along with companies from the old-guard of General Motors and Toyota as well as upstart young players like Tesla Motors and Elon Musk have embraced the once-extinct technology. The electric car has steadily gained traction in the U.S. and around the world. We are watching the start of a trillion dollar, worldwide race to see who will dominate one of the biggest commercial upheavals of the 21st century.
