Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of early literacy has seen significant recent advances in theory, research, and practice. These volumes bring together leading authorities to report on current findings, integrate insights from different disciplinary perspectives, and explore ways to provide children with the strongest possible literacy foundations in the first 6 years of life. The Handbook first addresses broad questions about the nature of emergent literacy, summarizing current knowledge on cognitive pathways, biological underpinnings, and the importance of cultural contexts. Chapters in subsequent sections examine various strands of knowledge and skills that emerge as children become literate, as well as the role played by experiences with peers and families. Particular attention is devoted to the challenges involved in making schools work for all children, including members of linguistic and ethnic minority groups and children living in poverty. Finally, approaches to instruction, assessment, and early intervention are described, and up-to-date research on their effectiveness is presented.

Book Synopsis Social care by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Health Committee
Download or read book Social care written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Health Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that older people are being let down by fragmented care services, and that the key to securing better outcomes for older people and other vulnerable groups, and to delivering the required efficiency savings for the NHS, is joined up services. The funding for NHS care, social care and social housing comes from different sources but attempts to join up these funds and to integrate services have been disappointing. Joined up commissioning is key. The new clinical commissioning groups and local councils should create a single commissioning process, with a single accounting officer, and a single outcomes framework for older people's health, care and housing services. This would improve outcomes by making it easier to move money around the local health, housing and social care system. The report also urges the Government to: co-ordinate policy more effectively across Whitehall and regularly rebalance national spending across health, housing and care services; replace the three overlapping but confusing frameworks that currently exist; recognize the widening funding gap in social care services; accept the recommendations in the Dilnot report ('Fairer care funding', 2011, ISBN 9780108510847) for a series of caps on care costs and identify the level at which these caps should be set; ensure that GPs identify much earlier and assess more clearly the needs of carers providing essential informal care to the old and the vulnerable; develop a new, integrated legal framework to support integration of health, social care and other services around the needs of the individual.

Book Synopsis The Creative Destruction of New York City by : Alessandro Busà
Download or read book The Creative Destruction of New York City written by Alessandro Busà and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill de Blasio's campaign rhetoric focused on a tale of two cities: rich and poor New York. He promised to value the needs of poor and working-class New Yorkers, making city government work better for everyone-not just those who thrived during Bloomberg's tenure as mayor. But well into de Blasio's administration, many critics think that little has changed in the lives of struggling New Yorkers, and that the gentrification of New York City is expanding at a record pace across the five boroughs. Despite the mayor's goal of creating more affordable housing, Brooklyn and Manhattan sit atop the list of the most unaffordable housing markets in the country. It seems that the old adage is becoming truer: New York is a place for only the very rich and the very poor. In The Creative Destruction of New York City, urban scholar Alessandro Busà travels to neighborhoods across the city, from Harlem to Coney Island, from Hell's Kitchen to East New York, to tell the story of fifteen years of drastic rezoning and rebranding, updating the tale of two New Yorks. There is a gilded city of sky-high glass towers where Wall Street managers and foreign billionaires live-or merely store their cash. And there is another New York: a place where even the professional middle class is one rent hike away from displacement. Despite de Blasio's rhetoric, the trajectory since Bloomberg has been remarkably consistent. New York's urban development is changing to meet the consumption demands of the very rich, and real estate moguls' power has never been greater. Major players in real estate, banking, and finance have worked to ensure that, regardless of changes in leadership, their interests are safeguarded at City Hall. The Creative Destruction of New York City is an important chronicle of both the success of the city's elite and of efforts to counter the city's march toward a glossy and exclusionary urban landscape. It is essential reading for everyone who cares about affordable housing access and, indeed, the soul of New York City.
