Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superconducting critical temperature Tc dependence of both rubidium and oxygen concentrations were identified for hexagonal rubidium tungsten bronze RbxWOy. Three regions corresponding to Tc 2 K (superconductivity suppressed region), Tc ~ 3 K (lower Tc region) and Tc 3 K (higher Tc region) were identified in Tc-x, y phase diagram for RbxWOy. The boundaries of the superconductivity suppressed regions shift toward high oxygen concentration as rubidium concentration increases. Two entirely different properties of superconductivity were observed for polycrystalline Rb0.23WOy with y = 2.90 and 3.02. The upper critical field Hc2 of higher Tc region samples is consistently one order of magnitude larger than that of lower Tc region samples. The vortex dimensionality of lower Tc region samples is anisotropic 3D and that of higher Tc region samples is quasi 2D in Tc-x, y phase diagram for RbxWOy. On the other hand, the oxygen concentration dependenct metal-nonmetal transition was observed in RbxWOy with y = 3.00, and it should be not intimately related with superconductivity in RbxWOy. Finally, the single crystalline Rb0.23WOy samples were made by normal freezing melt growth technique, and the qualitative effect of various oxygen concentrations in superconductivity for rubidium tungsten bronze was confirmed by single crystal annealing in pure oxygen.

Book excerpt: Single crystal conductivities were measured for K.4W03 and Rb. 32W03 in the range 150 to 370 K. Carrier mobilities, which are somewhat higher than in the Li and Na tungsten bronzes, closely follow a T sinh squarred (theta/2T) dependence. Calculations on the basis of the theory of Howarth and Sondheimer strongly support the assumption that the thermal part of the carrier mobility in the tungsten bronzes is primarily determined by polar scattering from optical mode lattice vibrations. Magnetic susceptibilities were also measured at room temperature for Rb. 26W03 and K.23-.45W03. Results are as pre as predicted by the Pauli-Peierls theory for quasi-free electrons. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials with layered structures remain an extensively investigated subject in current physics and chemistry. Most of the promising technological applications however deal with intercalation compounds of layered materials. Graphite intercalation compounds have now been known for a long time. Intercalation in transition metal dichalcogenides, on the other hand, has been investigated only recently. The amount of information on intercalated layered materials has increased far beyond the original concept for this volume in the series Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures. The large size of this volume also indicates how important this field of research will be, not only in basic science, but also in industrial and energy applications. In this volume, two classes of materials are included, generally investigated by different scientists. Graphite intercalates and intercalates of other inorganic com pounds actually constitute separate classes of materials. However, the similarity between the intercalation techniques and some intercalation processes does not justify this separation, and accounts for the inclusion of both classes in this volume. The first part of the volume deals with intercalation processes and intercalates of transition metal dichalcogenides. Several chapters include connected topics necessary to give a good introduction or comprehensive review of these types of materials. Organic as well as inorganic intercalation compounds are treated. The second part includes contributions concerning graphite intercalates. It should be noted that graphite intercalation compounds have already been mentioned in Volumes I and V.

Book excerpt: Materials Science has now become established as a discipline in its own right as well as being of increasing importance in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. To the student meeting this subject for the first time the combination of disciplines which it embraces represents a formidable challenge. He will require to understand the lan guage of the physicist and chemist as well as appreciate the practical uses and limita tions of solid materials. This book has been written as an introduction to the Physical Properties of Materials with these thoughts in mind. The mathematical content has been limited deliberately and emphasis is placed on providing a sound basis using simplified models. Once these are understood we feel that a mathematical approach is more readily assimilated and for this purpose supplementary reading is suggested. While the authors are deeply aware of the pitfalls in attempting such a treatment this is meant to be an essentially simple book to point the many avenues to be explored. We anticipate that the book will appeal to first and second year degree students in a variety of disciplines and may not prove too difficult for those studying appropriate Higher National Certificate and Diploma courses. Electrical engineers working in the field of materials applications may well find it useful as a guide to modern thinking about materials and their properties. The book begins with an introduction to some basic ideas of modern physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the second half of the twentieth century, a new branch of materials science had come into being — crystalline materials research. Its appearance is linked to the emergence of advanced technologies primarily based on single crystals (bulk crystals and films). At the turn of the last century, the impending onset of the “ceramic era” was forecasted. It was believed that ceramics would play a role comparable to that of the Stone or Bronze Ages in the history of civilization. Naturally, such an assumption was hypothetical, but it showed that ceramic materials had evoked keen interest among researchers. Although sapphire traditionally has been considered a gem, it has developed into a material typical of the “ceramic era.” Widening the field of sapphire application necessitated essential improvement of its homogeneity and working characteristics and extension of the range of sapphire products, especially those with stipulated properties including a preset structural defect distribution. In the early 1980s, successful attainment of crystals with predetermined char- teristics was attributed to proper choice of the growth method. At present, in view of the fact that the requirements for crystalline products have become more str- gent, such an approach tends to be insufficient. It is clear that one must take into account the physical–chemical processes that take place during the formation of the real crystal structure, i.e., the growth mechanisms and the nature and causes of crystal imperfections.
