Book Synopsis Culture and Identity through English as a Lingua Franca by : Will Baker
Download or read book Culture and Identity through English as a Lingua Franca written by Will Baker and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of English as a global lingua franca has given rise to new challenges and approaches in our understanding of language and communication. One area where ELF (English as a lingua franca) studies, both from an empirical and theoretical orientation, have the potential for significant developments is in our understanding of the relationships between language, culture and identity. ELF challenges traditional assumptions concerning the purposed 'inexorable' link between a language and a culture. Due to the multitude of users and contexts of ELF communication the supposed language, culture and identity correlation, often conceived at the national level, appears simplistic and naïve. However, it is equally naïve to assume that ELF is a culturally and identity neutral form of communication. All communication involves participants, purposes, contexts and histories, none of which are 'neutral'. Thus, we need new approaches to understanding the relationship between language, culture and identity which are able to account for the multifarious and dynamic nature of ELF communication.

Book Synopsis Menopause Ain’t No Joke by : Angela Verges
Download or read book Menopause Ain’t No Joke written by Angela Verges and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you feeling hot one minute and cold the next but no fever? You may be going through a season of menopause. Are kids driving you crazy? You may be parenting while menopausal. Perhaps you feel the need for extra prayer. In this atypical devotional, you will find comfort in knowing you are not alone. These real-life stories will cause you to laugh out loud or snicker to yourself as you see them playing out in your mind. This collection focuses on the uncomfortable physical realities of menopause symptoms including hot flashes, unusual hair growth, and mood swings. But understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of profound changes in life can be applied to any change in our physical, social, or emotional circumstances. Angela shares personal examples that reveal critical strategies for managing change: a sense of humor, reliance on scripture, and an unflinching faith. “If you giggle, blush, weep, or reach for a fan, you may be experiencing menopausal symptoms or you may simply be enjoying her excellent writing” (Debbie Taylor, author, Sweet Music in Harlem). “Menopause Ain't No Joke ain't no joke! LOL. I have read many devotionals and Christian books in my lifetime, but nothing compares to this lighthearted yet uplifting and humorous take on the insights and experiences of Christian writer Angela Verges. Sit down, relax, and expect to be enlightened, encouraged, and delightfully amused!” (Sheila Thomas, editor and publisher, Prayer and Praise Magazine).

Book Synopsis A World Without "Whom" by : Emmy J. Favilla
Download or read book A World Without "Whom" written by Emmy J. Favilla and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A provocative and jaunty romp through the dos and don'ts of writing for the internet" (NYT)--the practical, the playful, and the politically correct--from BuzzFeed copy chief Emmy Favilla. A World Without "Whom" is Eats, Shoots & Leaves for the internet age, and BuzzFeed global copy chief Emmy Favilla is the witty go-to style guru of webspeak. As language evolves faster than ever before, what is the future of "correct" writing? When Favilla was tasked with creating a style guide for BuzzFeed, she opted for spelling, grammar, and punctuation guidelines that would reflect not only the site's lighthearted tone, but also how readers actually use language IRL. With wry cleverness and an uncanny intuition for the possibilities of internet-age expression, Favilla makes a case for breaking the rules laid out by Strunk and White: A world without "whom," she argues, is a world with more room for writing that's clear, timely, pleasurable, and politically aware. Featuring priceless emoji strings, sidebars, quizzes, and style debates among the most lovable word nerds in the digital media world--of which Favilla is queen--A World Without "Whom" is essential for readers and writers of virtually everything: news articles, blog posts, tweets, texts, emails, and whatever comes next . . . so basically everyone.

Book Synopsis Humorous Structures of English Narratives, 1200-1600 by : Theresa Hamilton
Download or read book Humorous Structures of English Narratives, 1200-1600 written by Theresa Hamilton and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have the ability to recognize and create humour. But how do we do it? Salvatore Attardo and Victor Raskin have attempted to explain the workings of humour with their General Theory of Verbal Humor. How well does their theory explain the way humour ‘works’ in a particular text, and can it provide us with interesting, novel interpretations? By identifying and interpreting the narrative structures that create humour, this study tests the usefulness of Attardo & Raskin’s humour theory on a specific corpus of fabliaux, parodies and tragedies. Hamilton proposes a supplementation of the General Theory of Verbal Humor to create a means of undertaking what she calls a ‘humorist reading’. By posing the questions ‘why is this humorous?’, ‘how is it humorous?’ or ‘why is it not humorous?’ and providing the theoretical tools to answer them, a ‘humorist reading’ can make a valuable contribution to our understanding of a literary text and its place in society.
