Book Synopsis The Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt by : Wolfram Grajetzki
Download or read book The Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt written by Wolfram Grajetzki and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the ancient Egyptians, the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000-1700 BC) was a classical period of art, history and literature. The Twelfth Dynasty was one of the strongest ever to rule on the banks of the Nile: some of its kings were later worshipped as local gods, and were made famous by classical Greek authors. Yet Egyptologists tend not to look beyond the extraordinary royal sculpture and literary masterpieces of the time. Although the picture is fragmentary, as with any archaeological record, the last two hundred years of exploration and excavation have revealed much of the splendour of the period. This book examines the evidence for the culture, history and society of both central and provincial Egypt at the time, revealing the wealth of the entire country. In this second edition, Wolfram Grajetzki incorporates recent discoveries, discussions and publications which have emerged over the intervening fifteen years, including new excavation reports for the mastabas at Lisht and excavations at Abydos. Too often overshadowed by the better-preserved architecture of other periods, Middle Kingdom Egypt emerges for the reader as a fascinating age in its own right.

Book excerpt: The Festschrift in honor of the 70th birthday of the former Secretary General of the Egyptian "Supreme Council for Antiquities" (SCA) Gaballa Aly Gaballa comprises contributions from 23 scholars from Europe and Egypt. The here published essays cover the time span from the Egyptian Early Period to the Coptic Period, discussing archaeological and historical, as well as philological and religious issues. Researchers like Gunter Dreyer and Nabil Swelim present results of their latest excavations; several of Gaballa's many students make unknown objects from the Egyptian museum in Cairo accessible to the public for the first time; and Kenneth A. Kitchen introduces the reader to innovative as well as traditional views on the family of Ramses II., basing these investigations on his studies on the later New Kingdom periods. Old Egyptian literature is focused on in Dietrich Raue's ideas on re-dating certain events of the period, and in Zeinab Mahrous' analysis of the entry phrases of the Tale of the Doomed Prince and the Tale of Two Brothers.

Book Synopsis Cultural Perspectives on Aging by : Andrea Hülsen-Esch
Download or read book Cultural Perspectives on Aging written by Andrea Hülsen-Esch and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current demographic developments and change due to long life expectancies, low birth rates, changing family structures, and economic and political crises causing migration and flight are having a significant impact on intergenerational relationships, the social welfare system, the job market and what elderly people (can) expect from their retirement and environment. The socio-political relevance of the categories of ‘age’ and ‘ageing’ have been increasing and gaining much attention within different scholarly fields. However, none of the efforts to identify age-related diseases or the processes of ageing in order to develop suitable strategies for prevention and therapy have had any effect on the fact that attitudes against the elderly are based on patterns that are determined by parameters that or not biological or sociological: age(ing) is also a cultural fact. This book reveals the importance of cultural factors in order to build a framework for analyzing and understanding cultural constructions of ageing, bringing together scholarly discourses from the arts and humanities as well as social, medical and psychological fields of study. The contributions pave the way for new strategies of caring for elderly people.
Book Synopsis Judah and the Judeans in the Achaemenid Period by : Oded Lipschits
Download or read book Judah and the Judeans in the Achaemenid Period written by Oded Lipschits and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April, 2008, an international colloquium was held at the University of Heidelberg—the fourth convocation of a group of scholars (with some rotating members) who gathered to discuss the status of Judah and the Judeans in the exilic and postexilic periods. The goal of this gathering was specifically to address the question of national identity in the period when many now believe this very issue was in significant foment and development, the era of the Persian/Achaemenid domination of the ancient Near East. This volume contains most of the papers delivered at the Heidelberg conference, considering the matter under two rubrics: (1) the biblical evidence (and the diversity of data from the Bible); and (2) the cultural, historical, social, and environmental factors affecting the formation of national identity. Contributors: K. Schmid, J. Schaper, A. C. Hagedorn, C. Nihan, J. Middlemas, D. Rom-Shiloni, J. Wöhrle, Y. Dor, K. Southwood, D. N. Fulton, P.-A. Beaulieu, L. E. Pearce, D. Redford, A. Lemaire, J. F. Quack, B. Becking, R. G. Kratz, O. Tal, J. Blenkinsopp, R. Albertz, J. L. Wright, D. S. Vanderhooft, M. Oeming, and A. Kloner. Earlier volumes in the series of conferences are: Judah and the Judeans in the Neo-Babylonian Period, Judah and the Judeans in the Persian Period, and Judah and the Judeans in the in the Fourth Century B.C.E.

This book, the result of an international co-operation among more than twenty scholars, is divided into sections devoted to the definition of literary discourse in Ancient Egypt; the history and genres of these texts, their linguistic and stylistic features; and the image of Ancient Egypt as displayed in later literary traditions of the Mediterranean world - Greek, Coptic, Arabic. Book Synopsis Cultural Responses to the Far Right in Contemporary Germany by :
Download or read book Cultural Responses to the Far Right in Contemporary Germany written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of an insurgent far right and numerous deadly neo-Nazi attacks, various cultural practitioners have written far-right violence into Germany’s collective memory and imagined more inclusive futures in its wake. This volume explores contemporary examples from literature, music, theatre, film, television and art that respond to this situation. They demonstrate that, alongside the ways in which art expands the public sphere in terms of what is said and who is heard, aesthetic questions of how artistic works are presented are a crucial part of how they open up new perspectives.

Book Synopsis The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period, C. 1800-1550 B.C. by : K. S. B. Ryholt
Download or read book The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period, C. 1800-1550 B.C. written by K. S. B. Ryholt and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Intermediate Period designates the 250 year period (18001550 BC) which separates the two glorious periods of the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. During the 19th century BC, an invasion by Caanite tribes into the Delta took place. Around 1800 BC these people proclaimed their own king and the Delta thus became independent from the rest of Egypt. Egypt remained split between the Canaanitic rulers in North and the native Egyptian Kings in the South for the rest of the Second Intermediate Period. The division of Egypt brought about an economic decline, and the entire period is characterized by a lack of royal monuments. This circumstance has greatly hampered any attempts to establish a chronology of the period, and as a consequence it has been very difficult to date many sources which are relevant for the social and political situation of the period. The Second Intermediate Period has therefore remained one of the most obscure periods of Egypt's ancient history. The dissertation is a new attempt to establish a chronology for the Second Intermediate Period and define the different kingdoms, their territories and political relations. The study consists of four main chapters, three appendixes, a catalogue of sources, bibliography and indices. Included is a catalogue of all the historical sources, about 1500, known to certify the names of the Egyptian kings of the Second Intermediate Period. Each source is described in terms of type, origin and present location, followed by bibliographical references.
Book Synopsis The Helmholtz Curves by : Henning Schmidgen
Download or read book The Helmholtz Curves written by Henning Schmidgen and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the emergence of the phenomenon of “lost time” by engaging with two of the most significant time experts of the nineteenth century: the German physiologist Hermann von Helmholtz and the French writer Marcel Proust. Its starting point is the archival discovery of curve images that Helmholtz produced in the context of pathbreaking experiments on the temporality of the nervous system in 1851. With a “frog drawing machine,” Helmholtz established the temporal gap between stimulus and response that has remained a core issue in debates between neuroscientists and philosophers. When naming the recorded phenomena, Helmholtz introduced the term temps perdu, or lost time. Proust had excellent contacts with the biomedical world of late-nineteenth-century Paris, and he was familiar with this term and physiological tracing technologies behind it. Drawing on the machine philosophy of Deleuze, Schmidgen highlights the resemblance between the machinic assemblages and rhizomatic networks within which Helmholtz and Proust pursued their respective projects.
