Die Aussagen von 100 Müttern aus griechisch-deutschen Familien dokumentieren sowohl auf quantitativer, als auch auf qualitativer Ebene, dass zweisprachige Entwicklung und Erziehung nicht nur innerhalb der Familie stattfindet - hier ist vor allem die Partnersprache der Eltern bedeutsam - sondern auch durch die sozialen Netzwerke beeinflusst wird: Diese wirken dann unterstützend, wenn sie einen hohen Anteil an Personen aufweisen, die die Nichtumgebungssprache sprechen, sowie an Personen, die gegenüber der Nichtumgebungssprache und gegenüber Zweisprachigkeit generell positiv eingestellt sind. Im Ländervergleich wirkt sich ein hohes Prestige der Nichtumgebungssprache sowie eine hohe Wertigkeit von Mehrsprachigkeit generell positiv aus. Auf der Grundlage der Analyse des ökologischen Kontextes zweisprachiger Entwicklung und Erziehung lassen sich Empfehlungen sowohl für zweisprachig erziehende Eltern, als auch für Forschung, Bildungspolitik und Pädagogik formulieren.

Studies have traditionally used—mostly behavioral—methodologies rooted in adjacent established fields (e.g., L1 acquisition, adult L2 acquisition) offering, in addition to documenting and describing HS performance, important insights for linguistic theory and challenges related to (home/minority) language maintenance, contact, policy and more. This Element explains how these different language learning settings dynamically affect bilingual children's language learning trajectories. All children eventually learn to speak the societal language, but they often do not learn to fluently speak their non-societal language and may even stop speaking it. Children's and families' harmonious bilingualism is threatened if bilingual children do not develop high proficiency in both languages. Educational institutions and parental conversational practices play a pivotal role in supporting harmonious bilingual development.
