Book excerpt: This is the full story of the very successful B.B.C.-London Zoo expedition to British Guiana, that went to film exotic creatures and bring back alive, some of the strangest, some of the loveliest, and some of the most horrifying animals in the world. David Attenborough, who went with three companions, tells of their experiences in a country where they explored the broad flat savannahs, the creeks and swamps of the Rupununi, the remote forest reserve of the Amerindians, and the marshy coastal district. They searched for and found sloths and anteaters, manatees and macaws, hoatzins and humming-birds, snakes and spiders, capybara and caiman. They attended the exorcising of a spirit by a medicine man. They photographed ancient Indian rock paintings which few Europeans have ever seen. And they have met many unforgettable characters: Tiny McTurk, the tough rancher; King George, thei impassive Akawaio guide; Mr. King, the mermaid fisherman; and the shanty singers Lord Lucifer and The Great Smasher, to mention only a few. David Attenborough brings to this book his instinctive understanding of animals, his power of vivd description, and his lively sense of humour. Everybody will enjoy Zoo Quest to Guiana, for it is rich in delightful stories about animals collected, frioends made, and the farcical situations in which the author and his companions frequently found themselves

Book excerpt: "A GREAT BOOK." --THE NEW YORK TIMES "MARVELOUS." --THE TELEGRAPH "A RARE GLIMPSE OF A FLEDGLING DAVID ATTENBOROUGH IN THE WILD." --VANITY FAIR Living legend and presenter of BBC's Planet Earth series Sir David Attenborough tells the story of his early career as a broadcaster and a naturalist in his own words. In 1954, David Attenborough, a young television presenter, was offered the opportunity of a lifetime--to travel the world finding rare and elusive animals for the London Zoo's collection, and to film the expedition for the BBC for a new show called Zoo Quest. This is the story of those voyages. Staying with local tribes while trekking in search of giant anteaters in Guyana, Komodo dragons in Indonesia, and armadillos in Paraguay, he and the rest of the team contended with cannibal fish, aggressive tree porcupines, and escape-artist wild pigs, as well as treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather, to record the incredible beauty and biodiversity of these regions. Written with his trademark wit and charm, Adventures of a Young Naturalist is not just the story of a remarkable adventure, but of the man who made us fall in love with the natural world and taught us the importance of protecting it--and who is still doing so today.

Book excerpt: This is the full account of David Attenborough's recent Zoo Quest expedition to the islands of Indonesia. "Our plan," he writes, "was to travel widely throughout these islands, filming not only animals but also people and their everyday life. Our ultimate objective was to reach a small islet named Komodo, for we were going there to seek one of the most remarkable creatures alive today, the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon." Zoo Quest for a Dragon describes an exciting 3,000-mile journey in Indonesia- to the enchanting island of Bali, where the author and his companion, Charles Lagus, were fascinated by the dancing, music and temples; to Java, where they climbed the sleep slopes of an active volcano and gazed down into the heaving cauldron; and to the interior of Borneo, where they stayed in the longhouses of the Dyak peoples, and observed and captured many animals including Benjamin, the baby bear, and Charlie, a mischievous orang-utan. Finally, in a hazardous voyage by prau under the captaincy of a gun-smuggler, they reached Komodo, and discovered and filmed a fabulous dragon. David Attenborough writes vividly about his travels, the people he met, and the animals he saw and captured. But above all it is an entertaining story, for as in his first book, Zoo Quest to Guiana, the author reveals his irrepressible sense of the ridiculous, his rich vein of humour, and his gift as a brilliant raconteur

Book excerpt: David Attenborough went to Paraguay to find armadillos but he encountered many other animals-the smallest bird in the world, the exquisite humming bird, and one of the largest, the ostrich-like rhea; jabiru storks, toucans, hang-nests and oven birds; turtles, coatimundi and a maned wolf. He travelled by boat up a small, tortuous river into the far interior; he met Indian tribesmen, lone ranchers and the Paraguayans who played to him their haunting guitar and harp music; he went to the plain lands of the vast cattle-ranching estates, and he rode by horseback into the harsh, parched, inhospitable country of the Gran Chaco. In this book he tells, with lively humour and evocative descriptive writing, the full story of his remarkable experiences on the four months' journey-the luxury voyage that ended only too quickly; the blizzards of butterflies that made such a deep impression on him; the mysterious disappearance of two armadillos; the incredible sight of a unique herd of capybara; the crazy purchase of equipment for his expedition to the Chaco; the mad chase following the report of a captive giant armadillo; the weeks spent in the company of a roguish, immensely likeable jaguar-hunter and his pack of hounds; the incident when four drunken Indians had to be drugged to put them, and the expedition, out of harm's way. These and many other stories make Zoo Quest in Paraguay an exceedingly entertaining book as well as an absorbing account of a journey undertaken for B.B.C. Television not only to capture and film animals but to record the way of life of a little known country in the depth of South America. It was an adventurous 'Zoo Quest' and is undoubtedly David Attenborough's best book to date

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines leadership and management in natural resources, drawing on literature, principles, and the author’s own experiences as a leader and activist. Developing a general framework summarizing the leadership and management cycle in natural resources for practitioners, the book provides a synthesis of leadership theory and practice stemming from the personal and spiritual values of work, and the key principle of aligning organizational resources and actions with stated intentions. It discusses the somewhat unique context of natural resources, comprised of private and public goods and services and complex societal values. Key strategies that enable natural resource professionals to be leaders at all stages and positions in their career, including vision and sustainability, proficient human resources management, fairness and merit, and transparency and openness are analyzed. Case studies of famous natural resource leaders and activists, including Ding Darling, David Attenborough, Wangari Maathai, Marina de Silva, Greta Thunberg, Bob Brown, and Christina Koch, are included. The book examines their values, training, and principles and how they influenced national or global natural resource management. Drawing on the author’s own experiences as a leader and activist, including his role as Department Head at North Carolina State University, as an elected officer in the Society of American Foresters, and as an activist opposing the sale of the Hofmann Forest, the book provides practical examples and guidelines that professionals can consider and use in their careers. This book will be of great interest to natural resource managers and professionals as well as students studying environmental management and natural resource governance and to practitioners who are looking to develop broader leadership and management skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New species of animal and plant are being discovered all the time. When this happens, the new species has to be given a scientific, Latin name in addition to any common, vernacular name. In either case the species may be named after a person, often the discoverer but sometimes an individual they wished to honour or perhaps were staying with at the time the discovery was made. Species names related to a person are ‘eponyms’. Many scientific names are allusive, esoteric and even humorous, so an eponym dictionary is a valuable resource for anyone, amateur or professional, who wants to decipher the meaning and glimpse the history of a species name. Sometimes a name refers not to a person but to a fictional character or mythological figure. The Forest Stubfoot Toad Atelopus farci is named after the FARC, a Colombian guerrilla army who found refuge in the toad’s habitat and thereby, it is claimed, protected it. Hoipollo's Bubble-nest Frog Pseudophilautus hoipolloi was named after the Greek for ‘the many’, but someone assumed the reference was to a Dr Hoipollo. Meanwhile, the man who has everything will never refuse an eponym: Sting's Treefrog Dendropsophus stingi is named after the rock musician, in honour of his ‘commitment and efforts to save the rainforest’. Following the success of their Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles, the authors have joined forces to give amphibians a similar treatment. They have tracked down 1,609 honoured individuals and composed for each a brief, pithy biography. In some cases these are a reminder of the courage of scientists whose dedicated research in remote locations exposed them to disease and even violent death. The eponym ensures that their memory will survive, aided by reference works such as this highly readable dictionary. Altogether 2,668 amphibians are listed.
