Book excerpt: Enemy Captain Val shoots down a one-man fighter out near the Galactic Rim, but the pilot, much to his surprise and horror, is a woman named Lisbet Duncan. The alien jit’suku have a strict warrior code. In their culture, making war on females of any species is a shameful stain on one’s honor. The captain doesn't quite know what to do with Lisbet, but he can’t let her die alone in space. He orders his men to tow her life pod into his much larger battle ship. Val is the last of his line, and heir to a legacy that cannot be continued on his own world because no respectable jit’suku woman will have him after the destruction of his family. He has put all his considerable resources into building his state of the art battleship and joining the fight to take the human galaxy, hoping to restore his honor in some small way. This is Val’s first foray into human space and his first encounter with a human female. He finds her strangely alluring and altogether irresistible. Lisbet is attracted to Val as well. When he puts the moves on her, she can’t resist his masculine charm, but she doesn’t like being a prisoner - even if she is being kept in a gilded cage, treated more like a guest. She doesn’t know a lot about jit’suku culture and it’s pretty clear they don’t understand much about humans. It’s going to be fun educating her captor about just how headstrong, fierce… and loving… a human woman can be. Please note, this is a SHORT STORY. It is set in the same world as the Jit’Suku Chronicles - Arcana stories. The Jit’Suku Chronicles is a generational saga encompassing several centuries of warfare between the Milky Way Galaxy and its mostly human inhabitants, and the Jit’Suku Empire. The Arcana stories are set a few centuries before the Sons of Amber timeline.

On space ships, on newly-colonized planets or on a barely recognizable Earth, life forms, whether human, alien or something in between, will find their way to love. As giant corporations grasp new opportunities for profit and future armies clash, both in deep space and 'dirtside', former romantic partners try to put the past behind them and time-travelling rebels set out to romance the past. These science fiction stories of future love and lust - by Marcella Burnard, Bianca d'Arc, Jess Granger, Linnea Sinclair, C. L. Wilson and many more - are brimming with passion and humour. So, even though in space no one can hear you scream, they might just be able to hear you laugh.

Book excerpt: Video Scrambling and Descrambling for Satellite & Cable TV provides the "how and why" of encoding and decoding video signals. Most of the currently used methods are discussed, with the necessary technical background. Since digital scrambling methods will undoubtedly supplant analog methods, information on analog/digital conversion, phase-locked loops, digital techniques, and IC data sheets are included. In this new edition the authors incorporate the many developments in this field since 1986. They elaborate the basic information on scrambling given in the first edition, and discuss current scrambling systems such as Tri-mode, SSAVI, and Videocipher II. Looking back at the "gloom and doom" predictions made in the 80s, they discuss which have proven correct, which have yet to be realized, and which have been wrong. Their discussion of basic circuitry now includes some new IC devices, and the section on political, legal and consumer aspects of scrambling has been completely updated. New digitization techniques and construction data, decoder circuitry, audio scrambling techniques, manufacturers' data sheets, US Patents, and current developments such as digital audio are also covered in this updated version. Book excerpt: Him can be called one of the first successful attempts of Theatre of the Absurd, and thus lacks plot in the traditional sense. The first scene depicts a painted backdrop of a doctor anaesthetizing a woman with two face holes, in which are Me and The Doctor; facing this are three figures knitting in rocking chairs and having absurd conversations. This type of scene happens six times during the play, always following or preceded by scenes in the "room". The room scenes feature Me and Him conversing. The second act of Him features nine scenes from the play Him is writing. The final act returns to scenes in the "room" and the Weirds scenes but also adds in a scene in a Parisian restaurant and a scene at a freak show, the latter of which ends by revealing the ninth freak to be Me holding a baby. The play ends with Me breaking the fourth wall quite literally by revealing that the fourth wall of Me and Him's living room is not real. Me says that she can see people "pretending that this room and [Him and Me] are real". Him cannot believe what she is saying, although he wishes he could.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision made by the United Kingdom in 2016 to leave the European Union has produced shock waves across Europe and the world. Brexit calls into question consolidated assumptions on the finality of the EU, and simultaneously sparks new challenges. These new challenges are not only in regard of the constitutional settlements reached in the UK, notably in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but also on the future of European integration. Now that Article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union has been invoked, and the path towards full withdrawal by the UK from the EU remains clouded in uncertainties, a comprehensive legal and political analysis of how Brexit impacts on UK and the EU appears of the utmost importance. This book brings together leading lawyers, economists and political scientists to discuss the constitutional implications of Brexit and propose possible solutions for the way forward. The book is structured around four main themes. First, it considers how Brexit will be implemented legally and politically, in terms of the withdrawal and the possible new relations between the UK and the EU. Second, it examines the implications of Brexit on the constitutional structure of the UK, as well as on the status of Northern Ireland and the relations with the Republic of Ireland. Third, it examines the implications of Brexit on the constitutional structure of the EU, focusing on a number of key areas of EU policy-making, notably the Area of Freedom Security and Justice, the Single Market, and Economic and Monetary Union. Finally, the book looks to the mid to long-term future, and discusses the prospects for relaunching the EU after Brexit.

Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a lot of interest in provably "good" pseudo-random number generators [lo, 4, 14, 31. These cryptographically secure generators are "good" in the sense that they pass all probabilistic polynomial time statistical tests. However, despite these nice properties, the secure generators known so far suffer from the han- cap of being inefiicient; the most efiicient of these take n2 steps (one modular multip- cation, n being the length of the seed) to generate one bit. Pseudc-random number g- erators that are currently used in practice output n bits per multiplication (n2 steps). An important open problem was to output even two bits on each multiplication in a cryptographically secure way. This problem was stated by Blum, Blum & Shub [3] in the context of their z2 mod N generator. They further ask: how many bits can be o- put per multiplication, maintaining cryptographic security? In this paper we state a simple condition, the XOR-Condition and show that any generator satisfying this condition can output logn bits on each multiplication. We show that the XOR-Condition is satisfied by the lop least significant bits of the z2-mod N generator. The security of the z2 mod N generator was based on Quadratic Residu- ity [3]. This generator is an example of a Trapdoor Generator [13], and its trapdoor properties have been used in protocol design. We strengthen the security of this gene- tor by proving it as hard as factoring.
