Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionist Work in Palestine The articles contained in this volume have been selected from the special Palestine number of Die Welt, the central official organ of the Zionist Organization, which was issued last autumn. The flattering reception which that German publication received, not merely from Zionists but even from pronounced opponents of the Jewish nationalist movement, encouraged the hope that an English issue - even if on a slightly reduced scale - would meet with an equally cordial welcome. The necessity of such an issue must be patent to every body in English-speaking countries who is interested in Zionism, and who knows how comparatively scanty the literature upon that subject is in English. The contri butors to the Palestine number of Die Welt, which has been reprinted as an independent miscellany, are all authorities on the particular subject with which they deal, and the publication forms the first attempt to pre sent in a comprehensive and authoritative form an account of the work already accomplished by Zionist efforts in Palestine and a forecast of the work to be accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Awakening Palestine The object of this book is to assist English readers to understand on the one side the motive force and the significance of Zionist work in Palestine, on the other side the conditions under which that work is being carried on, the progress which it has made, and the problems by which it is confronted. Some unavoid able delay in the appearance of the book has interposed a larger interval than might have been desirable between the writing of certain of the articles and their publication; but it is believed that in all matters of importance the information given about Pales tinian conditions is substantially up-to-date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palestine of the Jews: Past, Present, and Future For more than two years I have been far from books and papers, which do not find a place in a marching kit, even with the generous allowance of 50 lbs. Of baggage; and I must crave indulgence on that account for any in accuracies and mistakes. I have made no attempt to be exhaustive in the account of the Jewish settlement, and I have given only my personal experience. To my father I owe it that my pencilled notes have been prepared for publication, with the assistance of my sister and her husband, who were among the colonisers before the war. And I am indebted to the same ready help for the incorporation in the text of references to the more salient later developments, so as to bring the work more nearly up to date. On the one side in this struggle is Palestine, the new Pales tine, active, energetic, confident of its future. Its live city popu lation is on this side, the whole of its educated class, the laborers and settlers in all the Jewish colonies, the school-teachers, sober minded men of experience who have devoted their lives to the revival of Hebrew, and their pupils, young people eager to live a Jewish life in the spirit of their models. It is the Side that is upheld by the Zionist organization, which stands Solid on this issue, ready for any sacrifice. This is valuable, especially to Americans, since the great majority of statements made in this country have been definitely from the Zionist point of view, and we need some corrective. Unless we make far more effort to understand the psychology of the Arabs, and to realize how the refugee problem looks to them, we shall continue to impede any real settlement in the stormy Middle East. But if the/ reader of this book peruses it thoughtfully, he will see why the Arabs consider the Zionists foreign invaders who have stolen from these refugees the home land which their fathers had tilled for over a thousand years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and the Future of Palestine: The Fallacies and Dangers of Political Zionism Not content with this, political Zionists now claim that the issue has been won, that Opposition to it has become useless, that those who continue to combat it are blind to the rapid movement Of events through which, as one Of the leaders puts it, Zionism has been transferred from the field Of national aspirations to the realm Of political fact. The slogan has been given out to drown all opposi tion by a mighty chorus of victory shouts. And all this before the Peace Conference at Paris has made any declaration on the subject! Book excerpt: "A Land With A People began as a storytelling project of Jewish Voice for Peace-New York City and subsequently transformed into a theater project performed throughout the New York City area. A Land With A People elevates rarely heard Palestinian and Jewish voices and visions. It brings us the narratives of secular, Muslim, Christian, and LGBTQ Palestinians who endure the particular brand of settler colonialism known as Zionism. It relays the transformational journeys of Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, Palestinian and LGBTQ Jews who have come to reject the received Zionist narrative. Unflinching in their confrontation of the power dynamics that underlie their transformation process, these writers find the courage to face what has happened to historic Palestine, and to their own families as a result. Stories touch hearts, open minds, and transform our understanding of the "other"-as well as comprehension of our own roles and responsibilities. A Land With a People emerges from this reckoning. Contextualized by a detailed historical introduction and timeline charting 150 years of Palestinian and Jewish resistance to Zionism, this collection will stir emotions, provoke fresh thinking, and point to a more hopeful, loving future-one in which Palestine/Israel is seen for what it is in its entirety, as well as for what it can be"--

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Colonization in Palestine Methods, Plans and Capital The treatment.of the questions discussed in this book may seem rather inopportune if one bears in mind merely the exist ing situation and the prospects, at present so obscure, of further Jewish activity in the settlement of Palestine. But if one cherishes the least hope that, whatever the fate of Palestine may be after the war, our claims in regard to colonization in that land may be fulfilled, the question of the financial means that will be necessary for a realization of the possibilities that present them selves, is one that cannot be considered early enough. The discussion of the question of a Jewish colonization in Palestine upon a large scale has quite recently been resumed in the press. The agricultural possibilities of the land and its capacity for a really extensive Jewish Colonization are being discussed in connection with the events of the war and with an eventual emigration of the Jewish masses from Eastern Europe. The problem of the financial means necessary for the realization of such plans has also been dealt with lately in various articles and pamphlets. In order to be able to arrive at an answer to the question of the capital necessary for a more extensive agricultural coloniza tion than the present, one must first be quite clear about the methods of colonization to be applied in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and Jewish Culture Whether with a view to preserving Judaism or to saving the Jews from extinction, it was necessary to set up a counter acting foree to this centrifugal self-despising movement; and that force could be found mainly in the encouragement of Jewish culture. From its inception, then, the Zionist move ment has embraced as part of its programme the revival of the Jewish consciousness - end that in two directions: by the re-establishment of a Jewish system of education and a Jewish national life in Palestine, and by the endeavour to stimulate the Spread of the Hebrew language and the knowledge of Jewish history and literature, and generally to revive the national consciousness, in the communities of the Diaspora. Youth the Jewish problem and the solution as formulated in the Zionist program. Young Judaea is an organization of young men and young women who are awakened to the needs of our people and who desire to equip themselves for effective service in the training of our youth. We feel the menace of a generation growing up in ignorance of its history, traditions and national ideals. Education in the schools of America can teach the new generation only the beau ties of other cultures, and the heroisms of other nations. The Bible has become a sealed book, or one to be read in the light of an interpretation dominated by alien thought; and the heroic figures of our own history, our national revival and the Hebrew renaissance are almost entirely unknown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism It was with much pleasure that I accepted the mandate, Offered to me by The Jewish Publication Society of America, to contribute an essay on Zion ism as one of a series dealing with prominent Jewish movements. Whichever side of the ques tion appeals to us, we must all recognize that under the name Zionism a solution Of the Jewish problem has been presented which must be of much moment for the future of the Jewish people. I venture to think that it is the only solution and to hold that the weal or woe of our race depends upon our espousal or rejection of it. In saying so much, I am prac tically affirming my standpoint. I make no excuse for the trend of my thought. I have written frankly as a Zionist, and I believe that the Publi cation Society and its many members will be served best by the presentation of all such subjects at the hand Of those whose sympathy for them has made them able to understand their essence.
