Book excerpt: One of the most famous science books of our time, the phenomenal national bestseller that "buzzes with energy, anecdote and life. It almost makes you want to become a physicist" (Science Digest). Richard P. Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, thrived on outrageous adventures. In this lively work that “can shatter the stereotype of the stuffy scientist” (Detroit Free Press), Feynman recounts his experiences trading ideas on atomic physics with Einstein and cracking the uncrackable safes guarding the most deeply held nuclear secrets—and much more of an eyebrow-raising nature. In his stories, Feynman’s life shines through in all its eccentric glory—a combustible mixture of high intelligence, unlimited curiosity, and raging chutzpah. Included for this edition is a new introduction by Bill Gates.

Download or read book Pledged written by Alexandra Robbins and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandra Robbins wanted to find out if the stereotypes about sorority girls were actually true, so she spent a year with a group of girls in a typical sorority. The sordid behavior of sorority girls exceeded her worst expectations -- drugs, psychological abuse, extreme promiscuity, racism, violence, and rampant eating disorders are just a few of the problems. But even more surprising was the fact that these abuses were inflicted and endured by intelligent, successful, and attractive women. Why is the desire to belong to a sorority so powerful that women are willing to engage in this type of behavior -- especially when the women involved are supposed to be considered 'sisters'? What definition of sisterhood do many women embrace? Pledged combines a sharp-eyed narrative with extensive reporting and the fly-on-the-wall voyeurism of reality shows to provide the answer.

Book Synopsis Sociocultural Identities in Music Therapy by : Susan Joan Hadley
Download or read book Sociocultural Identities in Music Therapy written by Susan Joan Hadley and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociocultural Identities in Music Therapy is a collection of personal narratives by 18 music therapists who engage in a critical culturally reflexive process and explore implications for their therapeutic practice. Amongst the authors, there is gender diversity, diversity of sexualities, racial diversity, ethnic diversity, neurodiversity, geographical diversity, linguistic diversity, educational diversity, and more. Each person's intersectional identity positions them differently in terms of their sociocultural location and thus each has differing experiences of unearned advantages or disadvantages based purely on their membership in various sociocultural groups in unique combinations. As such, each person distinctively explores how they experience and are experienced in social contexts. Woven together, this book is a rich tapestry of the sociocultural identities of music therapists and implications for their therapeutic relationships and processes. It provides a deep understanding and appreciation of the concept of culture and its omnipresence in all we do and all we are. The hope is that these narratives, and the included strategies for doing this kind of critical culturally reflexive work, will guide music therapy students and practitioners to examine their own sociocultural location and experiences, and that it will open music therapists to consider their relational dynamics in all aspects of their lives.
Download or read book Fantomina written by Eliza Haywood and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of its publication, a woman's sexual desire was thought to be muted, even nonexistent. Sexual pursuits of any kind were thought to be a man's game, left for a woman to indulge or deny. The novel and its author so obviously challenges the standing ideas of what desire looks like and who it can come from. The main protagonist disguises herself as four different women in her efforts to understand how a man may interact with each individual persona. She is intrigued by the men at the theater and the attention they pay to the prostitutes there, decides to pretend being a prostitute herself. Disguised, she especially enjoys talking with Beauplaisir, whom she has encountered before, though previously constrained by her social status's formalities. He, not recognizing her, and believing her favors to be for sale, asks to meet her. She demurs and puts him off until the next evening.... The story explores a variety of themes, almost none of which come without literary dispute and controversy. The protagonist's game of disguise touches on everything from gender roles, to identity, to sexual desire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were almost The Pendletones--after the Pendleton wool shirts favored on chilly nights at the beach--then The Surfers, before being named The Beach Boys. But what separated them from every other teenage garage band with no musical training? They had raw talent, persistence and a wellspring of creativity that launched them on a legendary career now in its sixth decade. Following the musical vision of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys blended ethereal vocal harmonies, searing electric guitars and lush arrangements into one of the most distinctive sounds in the history of popular music. Drawing on original interviews and newly uncovered documents, this book untangles the band's convoluted early history and tells the story of how five boys from California formed America's greatest rock 'n' roll band.
Book Synopsis Fraternity Gang Rape by : Peggy Reeves Sanday
Download or read book Fraternity Gang Rape written by Peggy Reeves Sanday and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic. Fraternity Gang Rape is a fascinating analysis of how all-male groups such as fraternities or athletic teams may create a rape culture where behavior occurs that few individuals acting alone would perpetrate. The new Introduction and Afterword shed light on how this pernicious problem continues today, insightfully illuminating the complicity of society in the failure of accountability for acquaintance rape."--Mary P. Koss, co-editor of No Safe Haven: Male Violence Against Women at Home, at Work, and in the CommunityPraise for the First Edition"A powerful and important book.--Contemporary Psychology"Full of insights .... an important contribution .... written in accessible prose and ideal for course use.--Women's Review of Books."Powerfully moving and analytically provocative...If the college or university at which AJS readers teach has a fraternity or sorority system, this book will be useful in understanding the way those organizations not only construct the gender relations between women and men on campus but also provide a map of male domination that members can take with them for the rest of their lives."--Michael S. Kimmel, American Journal of Sociology."Sanday draws a chilling picture of fraternity society, its debasement of women and the way it creates a looking-glass world in which gang rape can be considered normal behavior and the pressure of group-think it powerful. "--The Philadelphia Inquirer."An important book Ýthat ̈ should be read by everyone in higher education - faculty, administrators, and students."--Contemporary Sociology."Very accessible...Sanday's book explores the vulnerability of college women, and of young men seeking to prove their manhood.
