Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential introduction to the principles and applications of feedback systems—now fully revised and expanded This textbook covers the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems. Now more user-friendly than ever, this revised and expanded edition of Feedback Systems is a one-volume resource for students and researchers in mathematics and engineering. It has applications across a range of disciplines that utilize feedback in physical, biological, information, and economic systems. Karl Åström and Richard Murray use techniques from physics, computer science, and operations research to introduce control-oriented modeling. They begin with state space tools for analysis and design, including stability of solutions, Lyapunov functions, reachability, state feedback observability, and estimators. The matrix exponential plays a central role in the analysis of linear control systems, allowing a concise development of many of the key concepts for this class of models. Åström and Murray then develop and explain tools in the frequency domain, including transfer functions, Nyquist analysis, PID control, frequency domain design, and robustness. Features a new chapter on design principles and tools, illustrating the types of problems that can be solved using feedback Includes a new chapter on fundamental limits and new material on the Routh-Hurwitz criterion and root locus plots Provides exercises at the end of every chapter Comes with an electronic solutions manual An ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students Indispensable for researchers seeking a self-contained resource on control theory

Book excerpt: Excerpt from the book: "For a moment Zelle allowed himself to catch his breath. Things had gotten a bit hairy there for a moment. What if he hadn't managed to make it to the ambush point in time? There were three of those Giga Gels following him, things could have been pretty--"Wait-- Astra, wasn't there another one?" Zelle's stomach dropped as he realized they had only dispatched two of the creatures."Huh? What do you mean Zelle?" Lily's celebration was cut short by large hammer shaped gel falange smashing her across the clearing."Lily! What the--" before Zelle could even react, he too had been launched off of his feet, spiraling through the air as a heavy blow sent him careening several feet.As Zelle fought to regain his senses everything before him spiraled in a blinking haze of light and dark, he had to fight desperately to keep himself from fainting. He rolled over onto his back, desperately trying to look for his foe, but it was no use. With the growing shadow above him overcasting the sky Zelle finally realized the error of his ways. The Giga Gel leapt upwards, high into the air and used the full force of its body weight like an anvil. Zelle's eyes widened it descended, his arms going up instinctively as the creature smashed the entire party in one brutal strike."Zer0 G0d follows the story of a young man named Zelle who arrives in a game-like world. With no memory or recollection of self he must find his way in this place - God Realm Online.Zelle soon meets two friends, a loyal kin beast named Astra and a knowledgeable newbie trainer named Lily. Together the three navigate the perils and triumphs of GRO, inadvertently becoming a major force for change in the world. How will their tale unfold? Only God knows- Zer0 G0d: Awakening.

Book excerpt: Written by the creators of Stata's likelihood maximization features, Maximum Likelihood Estimation with Stata, Third Edition continues the pioneering work of the previous editions. Emphasizing practical implications for applied work, the first chapter provides an overview of maximum likelihood estimation theory and numerical optimization methods. With step-by-step instructions, the next several chapters detail the use of Stata to maximize user-written likelihood functions. Various examples include logit, probit, linear, Weibull, and random-effects linear regression as well as the Cox proportional hazards model. The final chapters describe how to add a new estimation command to Stata. Assuming a familiarity with Stata, this reference is ideal for researchers who need to maximize their own likelihood functions. New ml commands and their functions: constraint: fits a model with linear constraints on the coefficient by defining your constraints; accepts a constraint matrix ml model: picks up survey characteristics; accepts the subpop option for analyzing survey data optimization algorithms: Berndt-Hall-Hall-Hausman (BHHH), Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP), Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) ml: switches between optimization algorithms; computes variance estimates using the outer product of gradients (OPG)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds, the higher-dimensional analogs of smooth curves and surfaces, are fundamental objects in modern mathematics. Combining aspects of algebra, topology, and analysis, manifolds have also been applied to classical mechanics, general relativity, and quantum field theory. In this streamlined introduction to the subject, the theory of manifolds is presented with the aim of helping the reader achieve a rapid mastery of the essential topics. By the end of the book the reader should be able to compute, at least for simple spaces, one of the most basic topological invariants of a manifold, its de Rham cohomology. Along the way, the reader acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for further study of geometry and topology. The requisite point-set topology is included in an appendix of twenty pages; other appendices review facts from real analysis and linear algebra. Hints and solutions are provided to many of the exercises and problems. This work may be used as the text for a one-semester graduate or advanced undergraduate course, as well as by students engaged in self-study. Requiring only minimal undergraduate prerequisites, 'Introduction to Manifolds' is also an excellent foundation for Springer's GTM 82, 'Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology'.

Book excerpt: This undergraduate textbook introduces students to the basics of real analysis, provides an introduction to more advanced topics including measure theory and Lebesgue integration, and offers an invitation to functional analysis. While these advanced topics are not typically encountered until graduate study, the text is designed for the beginner. The author’s engaging style makes advanced topics approachable without sacrificing rigor. The text also consistently encourages the reader to pick up a pencil and take an active part in the learning process. Key features include: - examples to reinforce theory; - thorough explanations preceding definitions, theorems and formal proofs; - illustrations to support intuition; - over 450 exercises designed to develop connections between the concrete and abstract. This text takes students on a journey through the basics of real analysis and provides those who wish to delve deeper the opportunity to experience mathematical ideas that are beyond the standard undergraduate curriculum.

Book excerpt: This text presents a graduate-level introduction to differential geometry for mathematics and physics students. The exposition follows the historical development of the concepts of connection and curvature with the goal of explaining the Chern–Weil theory of characteristic classes on a principal bundle. Along the way we encounter some of the high points in the history of differential geometry, for example, Gauss' Theorema Egregium and the Gauss–Bonnet theorem. Exercises throughout the book test the reader’s understanding of the material and sometimes illustrate extensions of the theory. Initially, the prerequisites for the reader include a passing familiarity with manifolds. After the first chapter, it becomes necessary to understand and manipulate differential forms. A knowledge of de Rham cohomology is required for the last third of the text. Prerequisite material is contained in author's text An Introduction to Manifolds, and can be learned in one semester. For the benefit of the reader and to establish common notations, Appendix A recalls the basics of manifold theory. Additionally, in an attempt to make the exposition more self-contained, sections on algebraic constructions such as the tensor product and the exterior power are included. Differential geometry, as its name implies, is the study of geometry using differential calculus. It dates back to Newton and Leibniz in the seventeenth century, but it was not until the nineteenth century, with the work of Gauss on surfaces and Riemann on the curvature tensor, that differential geometry flourished and its modern foundation was laid. Over the past one hundred years, differential geometry has proven indispensable to an understanding of the physical world, in Einstein's general theory of relativity, in the theory of gravitation, in gauge theory, and now in string theory. Differential geometry is also useful in topology, several complex variables, algebraic geometry, complex manifolds, and dynamical systems, among other fields. The field has even found applications to group theory as in Gromov's work and to probability theory as in Diaconis's work. It is not too far-fetched to argue that differential geometry should be in every mathematician's arsenal.
