Book Synopsis Cross-national Comparative Research by : Hans-Jürgen Andreß
Download or read book Cross-national Comparative Research written by Hans-Jürgen Andreß and published by Springer VS. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-National Comparative Research is concerned with observing social phenomena across countries, and with developing explanations for their similarities and differences. This Special Issue focuses on the use of Cross-National Comparative Research to study the effects of national and sub-national contexts on behaviors and attitudes of individual actors. Moreover, it is of interest how behaviors and attitudes at the individual level lead to national and sub-national outcomes at the meso and macro levels. How do immigration policies affect migrants’ well-being? Does the number of divorcees in a country influence individual divorce risks? Are human values universal, or do they vary from one country to another? Under which conditions is political protest triggered, and when does it lead to revolutionary changes within society? These and other questions are typical of cross-national comparative analyses that seek to ascertain how upper-level (macro, meso) contexts influence micro-level phenomena, and how outcomes at the individual level are once more reflected at the meso and macro levels. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Andreß, Prof. Dr. Detlef Fetchenhauer and Prof. Dr. Heiner Meulemann teach sociology and social psychology at the University in Cologne, Germany.

Book Synopsis Transnational Activities and Immigrant Integration in Germany by : Reinhard Schunck
Download or read book Transnational Activities and Immigrant Integration in Germany written by Reinhard Schunck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates both the causes and effects of transnational activities among immigrants in relation to their integration into the receiving society. It uses large scale, representative data about first and second generation immigrants in Germany. It develops a formal theoretical model, which explains both transnational involvement and paths of immigrant integration. Important questions are answered: What consequences does transnational involvement have on integration? Is transnational involvement a distinct form of integration? Is it an alternative to assimilation? Does it hinder or facilitate assimilation? Longitudinal analyses are presented which show that immigrant integration and transnational involvement do not necessarily oppose each other. The book shows that although low levels of integration may coincide with strong transnational ties, the relationship is not causal. This book shows how immigrant integration and transnational involvement are related to each other and how a joint examination of both processes may advance our understanding of the general dynamics of migration and integration.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Sociology by : Theodor W. Adorno
Download or read book Introduction to Sociology written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Sociology distills decades of distinguished work in sociology by one of this centurys most influential thinkers in the areas of social theory, philosophy, aesthetics, and music. It consists of a course of seventeen lectures given by Theodor W. Adorno in May-July 1968, the last lecture series before his death in 1969. Captured by tape recorder (which Adorno called the fingerprint of the living mind), these lectures present a somewhat different, and more accessible, Adorno from the one who composed the faultlessly articulated and almost forbiddingly perfect prose of the works published in his lifetime. Here we can follow Adornos thought in the process of formation (he spoke from brief notes), endowed with the spontaneity and energy of the spoken word. The lectures form an ideal introduction to Adornos work, acclimatizing the reader to the greater density of thought and language of his classic texts. Delivered at the time of the positivist dispute in sociology, Adorno defends the position of the Frankfurt School against criticism from mainstream positivist sociologists. He sets out a conception of sociology as a discipline going beyond the compilation and interpretation of empirical facts, its truth being inseparable from the essential structure of society itself. Adorno sees sociology not as one academic discipline among others, but as an over-arching discipline that impinges on all aspects of social life. Tracing the history of the discipline and insisting that the historical context is constitutive of sociology itself, Adorno addresses a wide range of topics, including: the purpose of studying sociology; the relation of sociology and politics; the influence of Saint-Simon, Comte, Durkheim, Weber, Marx, and Freud; the contributions of ethnology and anthropology; the relationship of method to subject matter; the problems of quantitative analysis; the fetishization of science; and the separation of sociology and social philosophy.
Book Synopsis Artificial Communication by : Elena Esposito
Download or read book Artificial Communication written by Elena Esposito and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proposal that we think about digital technologies such as machine learning not in terms of artificial intelligence but as artificial communication. Algorithms that work with deep learning and big data are getting so much better at doing so many things that it makes us uncomfortable. How can a device know what our favorite songs are, or what we should write in an email? Have machines become too smart? In Artificial Communication, Elena Esposito argues that drawing this sort of analogy between algorithms and human intelligence is misleading. If machines contribute to social intelligence, it will not be because they have learned how to think like us but because we have learned how to communicate with them. Esposito proposes that we think of “smart” machines not in terms of artificial intelligence but in terms of artificial communication. To do this, we need a concept of communication that can take into account the possibility that a communication partner may be not a human being but an algorithm—which is not random and is completely controlled, although not by the processes of the human mind. Esposito investigates this by examining the use of algorithms in different areas of social life. She explores the proliferation of lists (and lists of lists) online, explaining that the web works on the basis of lists to produce further lists; the use of visualization; digital profiling and algorithmic individualization, which personalize a mass medium with playlists and recommendations; and the implications of the “right to be forgotten.” Finally, she considers how photographs today seem to be used to escape the present rather than to preserve a memory.
Book Synopsis Constructing a Sociology of Translation by : Michaela Wolf
Download or read book Constructing a Sociology of Translation written by Michaela Wolf and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The view of translation as a socially regulated activity has opened up a broad field of research in the last few years. This volume deals with central questions of the new domain and aims to contribute to the conceptualisation of a general sociology of translation. Interdisciplinary in approach, it discusses the role of major representatives of sociology like Pierre Bourdieu, Bruno Latour, Bernard Lahire, Anthony Giddens or Niklas Luhmann in establishing a theoretical framework for a sociology of translation. Drawing on methodologies from sociology and integrating them into translation studies, the book questions some of the established categories in this discipline and calls for a redefinition of long-assumed principles. The contributions show the social involvement of translation in various fields and focus especially on the translator’s position in an emerging sociology of translation, Bourdieu’s influence in conceptualising this new sub-discipline, methodological questions and a sociologically oriented meta-discussion of translation studies.
