Book Synopsis Animal Models for the Study of Human Disease by : Angela L. Shamchuk
Download or read book Animal Models for the Study of Human Disease written by Angela L. Shamchuk and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 1108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olfactory dysfunction, although caused by many factors including physical damage and genetic abnormalities, is an early stage symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases. Not only is the olfactory system subject to the specific histological abnormalities but patients also lose the capacities to detect, identify, and discriminate among odors. In addition to olfactory deficits, motor dysfunction is another prominent manifestation of these conditions. Recent studies have begun to create zebrafish (Danio rerio) models for neurodegenerative diseases. Despite successful execution, there remains a great deal of potential in testing the models using established methods of olfactory and motion assessment. This chapter discusses the current zebrafish models and suggests olfactory and motor endpoints for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, multiple system atrophy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Book Synopsis The rights and wrongs of zebrafish: Behavioral phenotyping of zebrafish by : Allan V. Kalueff
Download or read book The rights and wrongs of zebrafish: Behavioral phenotyping of zebrafish written by Allan V. Kalueff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal models and tests have become increasingly important for biomedical research, enabling a better understanding of pathogenic pathways involved in various human disorders. Over the last decades, zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become a very popular model organism in biomedical research. Recently, this fish has entered the waters of neuroscience and biological psychiatry, quickly becoming an indispensable model species in this field. With a high genetic homology to humans (~75% based on coding regions), it is not surprising that humans and fish are very similar physiologically (and behaviorally). Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that zebrafish can be an excellent model of human neuropsychiatric disorders. While some classical psychiatrists may not too easily be persuaded by this generalization, the current book “The rights and wrongs of zebrafish: principles of behavioral phenotyping and CNS disease modeling” explains, in a domain-by-domain manner, how exactly zebrafish models can be used to target a wide range of human brain disorders and aberrant phenotypes. The contributors to this book are leading international scholars whose work spearheads innovative zebrafish neuroscience research around the world. Written by top experts in the field, this book makes for a useful, balanced and up-to-date reading that outlines the use of zebrafish to study the pathological mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders.

Book Synopsis Nanotoxicology and Nanosafety 2.0 by : Ying-Jan Wang
Download or read book Nanotoxicology and Nanosafety 2.0 written by Ying-Jan Wang and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have been widely applied in many industrial sectors, including medicine, consumer products, and electronics. While such technology has brought benefits and convenience to our daily lives, it may also potentially threaten human health. In some cases, nanomaterials present unexpected risks to both humans and the environment. Assessments of the potential hazards associated with nanotechnology have been emerging, but substantial challenges remain, because the large number of different nanomaterials cannot be effectively evaluated in a timely manner. The development of a good strategy for a nanomaterials hazard assessment not only promotes the more widespread adoption of non-rodent or 3Rs principles, but also makes nanotoxicology testing more ethical, relevant, and cost- and time-efficient. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms by which nanomaterials perturb biological systems is critical for a more comprehensive elucidation of their nanotoxicity, and this will also facilitate the development of prevention and intervention policies against adverse outcomes induced by them. We hope that the articles included in this eBook can provide updated knowledge on nanotoxicology and nanosafety, from the point of view of both toxicology and ecotoxicology.
