Book Synopsis Africa Writes Back by : James Currey
Download or read book Africa Writes Back written by James Currey and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2008 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 17 June 2008 is the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart by Heinemann. This provided the impetus for the foundation of the African Writers Series in 1962 with Chinua Achebe as the Editorial Adviser.'The book is therefore not only the story of a publishing enterprise of great significance; it is also a large part of the story of African literature and its dissemination in the latter half of the twentieth century. The manuscript is full of the drama of that enterprise, the drama of dealing with the mother house, William Heinemann, of dealing with the often intractable political constraints dominating the intellectual space across Africa, and not least of all dealing with the writers themselves - with their ambitions, their temperaments, their financial needs and, at time, their perception of a colonial relationship between themselves and a European publishing house.' - Clive Wake, Emeritus Professor of Modern Languages, University of Kent at Canterbury.

Book Synopsis Storytelling in Northern Zambia by : Robert Cancel
Download or read book Storytelling in Northern Zambia written by Robert Cancel and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling plays an important part in the vibrant cultural life of Zambia and in many other communities across Africa. This innovative book provides a collection and analysis of oral narrative traditions as practiced by five Bemba-speaking ethnic groups in Zambia. The integration of newly digitalised audio and video recordings into the text enables the reader to encounter the storytellers themselves and hear their narratives. Robert Cancel's thorough critical interpretation, combined with these newly digitalised audio and video materials, makes Storytelling in Northern Zambia a much needed addition to the slender corpus of African folklore studies that deal with storytelling performance. Cancel threads his way between the complex demands of African fieldwork studies, folklore theory, narrative modes, reflexive description and simple documentation and succeeds in bringing to the reader a set of performers and their performances that are vivid, varied and instructive. He illustrates this living narrative tradition with a wide range of examples, and highlights the social status of narrators and the complex local identities that are at play. Cancel's study tells us not only about storytelling but sheds light on the study of oral literatures throughout Africa and beyond. Its innovative format, meanwhile, explores new directions in the integration of primary source material into scholarly texts. This book is the third volume in the World Oral Literature Series, developed in conjunction with the World Oral Literature Project.

Download or read book Zambia written by Godfrey Mwakikagile and published by Continental Press. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a general introduction to Zambia and its people. All the country's provinces and towns are covered in the book. The author also looks at Zambia since independence, the economy, the country's different ethnic groups and cultures and how the people have been able to build a stable, multi-ethnic society with one identity: One Zambia, One Nation. The author presents a comprehensive picture of Zambia and its people, customs and traditions. The book is about Zambia today. But it's also a historical study of a country which once was a part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The federation was also known as the Central African Federation. And what was then Northern Rhodesia, which is Zambia today, was the largest country in that colonial union. The author has focused on a number of ethnic groups in the country from a historical and cultural perspective and in terms of contemporary life. The work is also a comprehensive study of the geography of the country and its economic potential including an abundance of natural resources. It is a general study of Zambia as a country and as a nation, rich in culture - customs and traditions - and in history, and full of vitality. It should serve as a good introduction to Zambia, comprehensive enough to meet the needs and satisfy the curiosity of some members of the general public such as tourists who want to learn quite a few things about this African country."

Book Synopsis SOCIAL WELFARE IN ZAMBIA by : Ndangwa Noyoo
Download or read book SOCIAL WELFARE IN ZAMBIA written by Ndangwa Noyoo and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses social welfare activities in Zambia in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. It explains how indigenous social welfare initiatives in colonial Zambia, culminated in the Federation of Welfare Societies. The former became the first nationalist party in this era known as the Northern Rhodesia Congress (NRC), with Godwin Mbikusita Lewanika as its leader. The book also elucidates how the first African government, which was headed by Kenneth Kaunda, attained positive human development indictors in Zambia in the 1960s. Nonetheless, this was at the expense of Barotseland as Kaunda's government had deliberately underdeveloped Barotseland after independence, whilst harassing and imprisoning Barotse activists for decades. After 1991, successive governments continued to apply Kaunda's methods. The book contends that Zambia in its present form is an illegal state, because the Barotseland Agreement was abrogated by Kaunda in 1969. This treaty was meant to amalgamate the former British Protectorates of Barotseland and Northern Rhodesia to form Zambia in 1964.

Download or read book Good Morning, Mr. Mandela written by Zelda la Grange and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important reminder of the lessons Madiba taught us all.”—President Bill Clinton There are numerous books about Nelson Mandela, but Good Morning, Mr. Mandela is the first by a trusted member of his inner circle. In addition to offering a rare close portrait, Zelda la Grange pays tribute to Madiba as she knew him—a teacher who gave her the most valuable lessons of her life. Growing up in apartheid South Africa, La Grange, a white Afrikaner, feared the imprisoned Nelson Mandela as “a terrorist.” Yet she would become one of his most devoted associates for almost two decades. Inspiring and deeply felt, this book honors a great man’s lasting gift.
Download or read book The Old Drift written by Namwali Serpell and published by Hogarth Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A dazzling debut, establishing Namwali Serpell as a writer on the world stage."--Salman Rushdie, The New York Times Book Review Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize - "Clear-eyed, energetic and richly entertaining."--The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review - Time - Tordotcom - Kirkus Reviews - BookPage 1904. On the banks of the Zambezi River, a few miles from the majestic Victoria Falls, there is a colonial settlement called The Old Drift. In a smoky room at the hotel across the river, an Old Drifter named Percy M. Clark, foggy with fever, makes a mistake that entangles the fates of an Italian hotelier and an African busboy. This sets off a cycle of unwitting retribution between three Zambian families (black, white, brown) as they collide and converge over the course of the century, into the present and beyond. As the generations pass, their lives--their triumphs, errors, losses and hopes--emerge through a panorama of history, fairytale, romance and science fiction. From a woman covered with hair and another plagued with endless tears, to forbidden love affairs and fiery political ones, to homegrown technological marvels like Afronauts, microdrones and viral vaccines, this gripping, unforgettable novel is a testament to our yearning to create and cross borders, and a meditation on the slow, grand passage of time. Praise for The Old Drift "An intimate, brainy, gleaming epic . . . This is a dazzling book, as ambitious as any first novel published this decade."--Dwight Garner, The New York Times "A founding epic in the vein of Virgil's Aeneid . . . though in its sprawling size, its flavor of picaresque comedy and its fusion of family lore with national politics it more resembles Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children."--The Wall Street Journal "A story that intertwines strangers into families, which we'll follow for a century, magic into everyday moments, and the story of a nation, Zambia."--NPR
